1,000 Horsepower or Bust! We Nearly Blew this Engine Up in the Hunt for a World Record!

Crazy things tend to happen whenever we get together with Newcomer Racing on the engine dyno. And this video takes the cake! Originally, the plan was just to test this turbo setup with a ridiculous 11.8:1 compression ratio. But things got out of hand quickly. We blew things up, we make huge horsepower numbers and we even think we made history! Just watch and see.
If you are seeing Newcomer Racing's previous ultimate high-horsepower build, check it here: • Turbo Jeep Smashes Wor...
The Jeep 4.0 liter straight six is known as a reliable and torquey -- if low horsepower -- plodder. Engine builder Keith Newcomer shows these engines are capable of much more than anyone ever figured with his latest turbo build. Eventually, this engine will likely make its way into our drag-and-drive Rambler race car.

      @Drmcclung@Drmcclung3 ай бұрын
    • @@Drmcclung Inline 6 harmonics are usually somewhere between 6 and 7 grand. Depends on stroke, bore centers, materials etc. One the AMXJ channel there are a series of interviews with a former Jeep drivetrain engineer who was involved in cylinder head design. He was also involved in a 4.0 powered dragster that set class records. The engine was spinning 9K plus through the traps.

      @mpetersen6@mpetersen63 ай бұрын
    • @@mpetersen6 Yep, for all engine configurations there are two stable harmonic ranges (well technically more, but how the hell do you reach the 3rd+ stable range). The issue is transitioning through the destructive harmonics in the 6.5-8K band. Once past that, presuming your other components are up to the challenge, you won't have crank destroying harmonic problems again till well past 11K.

  • Ancient push rod straight 6? Check! Cast crank? Check! Carburetor and distributor? Check! 1000+ horsepower? You betcha. Freaking awesome This channel has consistently great content. Thank you so much for bringing this to us. BTW- it takes more power to run the turbo into atmosphere than it does when hooked to the intake. It was the wastegate that blew off, not the blow off valve

    @bobqzzi@bobqzzi3 ай бұрын
    • How would a turbo spinning without compressor restriction use more power than if it was blowing into the intake and making boost?

      @JayRussellDuramax@JayRussellDuramax3 ай бұрын
    • @@JayRussellDuramax it's not blowing without compressor restriction- it is restricted by the 14.7PSI of atmospheric pressure. when hooked to an intake it is blowing into a vacuum. This is counter intuitive but true. I actually learned this from Steve Morris's KZhead channel.

      @bobqzzi@bobqzzi3 ай бұрын
    • @@bobqzzi It's a vacuum initially, but not once the compressor builds boost pressure - which doesn't take long. As soon as the vacuum goes away, you're in the same situation as if you were blowing into open air. Once you build boost, you're using far more energy than if you were blowing into open air.

      @JayRussellDuramax@JayRussellDuramax3 ай бұрын
    • @@JayRussellDuramax That's incorrect. Every time the piston descends, it creates a vacuum- if that wasn't true, a naturally aspirated engine wouldn't run. "Open air" is always 14.7PSI.

      @bobqzzi@bobqzzi3 ай бұрын
    • @@bobqzzi Maybe if the engine is naturally aspirated. If it's forced induction - like this one - positive pressure is forcing air into the cylinders. The vacuum isn't necessary anymore. Engines operate on pressure differentials. When a forced induction engine is on the intake stroke, that cylinder doesn't go into vacuum, the pressure is just reduced below the boost pressure by the piston moving down and expanding the volume in the cylinder.

  • Thank you The Horsepower Monster. A very important key for the exact mixture mass distribution in single carburettor operation on many cylinders is the correct, ideally divided intake or charge air duct routing between the pressure carburettor and the intake valves. Although the 5K IR RGB UV (infrared channel) of the camera was not active in the video, the start-up colours show quite well how precisely the system works. It is possible to galvanically clean these steel tarnish colours and then you can clearly see the integrated material thermal exhaust pipe average value with every new test bench run. Re the turbo loss, the free air HP drop is still artificially low I reckon. What it wants is deadheading into an enclosed chamber and held to say 15psi (or whatever) against a couple of blow off valves and connected to the wastegate to simulate the intake manifold pressure the turbo has to actually pump. That'll give a truer pumping loss indication. I reckon it'll be around about 100hp loss, which actually isn't that much in the overall scheme of things, particularly when just cruising around.

  • Do you think heat wrap on the exhaust could help with your issues with going lean? If not what about the heat shielding found on the newer wranglers with the 4.0?

  • I have always loved straight 6’s and a old friend of mine built a all out drag whine was I Ford Pinto and this guy is a perfections on any thing he does and he powered this car with 300 Ford straight 6 and this was 25 yrs ago and it was super fast bracket car and the car set in his garage for at least 10-15 years and a old friend of mine bought this drag car and he put a supper charged all aluminum Ford 428 and don’t remember what horse power he can but I know he had to put longer wheelie bars on and I never seen him lose and it looked like a stock car until you looked inside and under car and everything inside the car was aluminum sheeting full funny car cage with a parachute on back that was required in the rules they have had. And being so short it was a hand full but if it launched perfect it went straight down the track in low 8’s but if you did not get it in the groves and perfectly straight at the 60’ marke he would shut it down . And when this pinto straight 6 half the motor was inside the car with you and the 428 there were about 2-4 cylinders in car with you and he had a big following at our little drag stripe with the straight 6 300 Ford everybody knew the Pinto was warming up for a run and everybody would run to the fence to watch him go because there was not any 6’s on that track but for the life of me I can not find one of his ticket that printed out all the speed reaction time 60 ft mark. A great time for a guy built this car from scratch by Leroy Horseman !

  • What's the pressure differential in the exhaust manifold vs the boost pressure? That number will tell all about the efficiency and optimization of this setup, as anything over 1.5:1 EBP to IBP is massively wasting pressure for no power gain. I won't even talk about cam specs, yet, but given the N/A power numbers I'm relatively certain that can be optimized as well. David Vizard teaches and shows that you can get roundabouts 1.4ft-lbs per cubic inch N/A at 10:1 compression on 87 octane fuel and as long as your heads aren't absolute trash, most of that will come from having the cam right, which he discusses how to do in his myriad of cam theory videos and books.
