    • @@WhatsHappeningHockeysee your take in this is bad, hextall being forced to resign Malkin and Letang has done all the damage to this team, there’s a thing called a salary cap and when two old players who aren’t producing to make up for their lack of defence take up 16% of your cap space. Suddenly all these “2 year extensions for the likes of Carter aren’t too bad cause they are only 2 years. Not 6 years for a 35 year old small injury prone defencemen or 4 years for a 36 year old Russian forward. Those contracts deserve hate cause they are awful, his moves for 3rd and 4th liners mean nothing when you are trading your 1st round pick every year for a decade prior. In the salary cap world you need cheap young talent. Just cause Sid’s nickname is the kid doesn’t mean he’s a kid anymore. Kyle Dumbass will do more damage to this team than Ron Hextall could’ve ever done in a decade. The Karlsson trade and Alex Nylander given away for nothing are already your first signs of Dubas ineptitude. Have fun.

  • You briefly mentioned it at the end but some of it has to go on Sullivan. Unable to get a spark from guys and when they leave, a new coach gets them into a role where they succeed. Is it to for Sully to hit the road with the recent failures and struggles of the team?

    @JStark98@JStark98Ай бұрын
    • Imo Sullivan is just as to blame for failing to recognize the depth players at his disposal. What separates the good coaches from the great is their ability to form good 3rd/4th lines. Not every coach gets the luxury to set and forget Crosby at 1C every night. John Cooper’s run in Tampa is a great example of how properly utilizing depth players can elevate a team

      @brennanschaufert4076@brennanschaufert4076Ай бұрын
    • I could’ve gone into way more depth with Sullivan too. Some of his traits that helped the Penguins to championships have been noticeably absent in recent seasons. When Sully took over in late 2015, he saw great potential in the players he worked with in Wilkes Barre. Bryan Rust, Tom Kuhnackl and Connor Sheary were all injected into the NHL lineup with trust. They had room to make errors and 100% did, but Sully stuck with his gut and let them find their way. The following year he did the same thing with Guentzel (though his impact was much more immediate). In recent seasons Sullivan’s patience for youth has been little to non-existent. Developing players barely get a shot in the NHL. They have incredibly short leashes. This isnt to discredit the fact that the pens’ pool of youth has gotten increasingly shallow. But so has Sullivan’s judgement (see his repeated decision to start Jeff Carter at centre in overtime situations, only to remove him from the ice immediately after the draw) Dominik Simon, Scott Wilson and Josh Archibald are also examples of younger players he really liked. He used them repeatedly in the twenty-teens. But these guys never found proper success with other franchises, with fewer tools in their respective boxes. Was that because Sullivan understood them and was able to milk more out of their games? Or was it blind trust based on a brief history in the AHL? Regardless, Sully has not given young players the same opportunities in recent seasons. His patience is short. He makes his mind up on how a player should be utilized incredibly quick. It’s rare that they’re able to break from that mould.

      @WhatsHappeningHockey@WhatsHappeningHockeyАй бұрын
    • @@WhatsHappeningHockey exactly, Sullivan in 2016 seems like the complete opposite coach as he is now, then he was creative with lines and utilized those young guys in the best position to succeed (with Crosby) and wasn't afraid to make adjustments especially with goalies, past 2018 he's been worse every year, puts all his faith in whoever the starting goalie was no matter how much better the backup played (first Murray then Jarry) and now doesn't make any adjustments at all, same lines every game, with the occasional scratching of a young 4th liner because he gave the puck away once

Spanos de$ired prime televi$ion money, and wanted the NFL to allow him to move to Lo$ Angele$ or Vega$ - and got his wish decades later. • It's years of trading 1sts to win in the moment even prior to Hextall. Search who's made it since 2013 2013 had Guentzel/Jarry If you go back prior to that Despres,Bennett,Morrow,Pouliot. After 2013 Addison,Blomqvist,Poulin,Bjorkqvist... They did land on Sprong and Murray later rounds but can get by with drafts like that. You need picks to pane out or mix in with the Core. They have Yager/Pickering/TySmith but it's kind of late.

  • His moves in Pittsburgh was spotty but no one can deny Hextall’s magnificent rebuild of the LA Kings. He drafted well, stocked up young talent, and the Kings are set for long term success with how he rebuilt the team. Kings have the deepest talent pool of prospects in the NHL. The irony is Blake is running the team into the ground and squandering all of hextall’s work

  • I absolutely love the Penguins and breaks my heart to see them deteriorate before my eyes. The issues started long ago with Rutherford. Regardless of which players you like, the team became a revolving door of trades. They pick up good players, get them integrated, then trade them like baseball cards. These GM’s think they can “engineer” a team by making trades instead of building a team…they’re so stupid but sometimes get lucky like Rutherford…thanks for playing Russian roulette with our team. The problem is the GM’s and ownership.

  • As long as Crosby, Malkin and Letang are playing, it's win now culture in Pittsburgh. Right or wrong it's reality. You think Dubass was hired because he promised the great rebuild of 2023? As far as owners asking about Hextall's future plans, that's them covering their owns asses when they decided to move on from him. You think they want a blueprint for a rebuild more than another deep playoff run?

    @johnsweet96@johnsweet96Ай бұрын
    • They don't want a deep playoff run or a rebuild, they want MONEY. The Penguins have no chance of another playoff run past the 1st round for the rest of Sid's career no matter what they do. Ownership just wants to keep the old stars as nostalgia to sell tickets and jerseys. They don't care if we win or lose, they just pretend to want to win because we have Crosby.

Graves signing was the biggest head scratcher at the time and now its one of the worst contracts in the NHL. Also he's literally just signing his buddies from prior teams that clearly weren't good fits. (Acciari, Johnsson, Bunting)

Pittsburgh are lucky because in a renaissance they can go from bottom to top if they make the right moves. When Crosby, Malkin and Letang retire, the Pens will take a drop and a much bigger drop than the Bruins took. Boston barely dropped... Krejci wasn't producing like crazy with them, so his points were "expandable" with all due respect to the guy. With Bergegon however, they took a hit but they managed to stay almost at the same level. Bergeron could have played 2-3 more years for sure. It's his decision, and we got to respect that, but us fans probably wish he still played a few years. Hehe The Pens will take a drop like the Black Hawks have. Letang, Malkin and Crosby. That's 3 players. Boston technically lost only 1 player. I feel like Crosby wants to end his career in Pittsburgh so he is not going to get traded. He is more loyal than he is hungry for another cup. Malkin though I don't know about him. If he is as loyal as Sid, sure keep him but it's going to hurt the team. I say they should only trade him if he wants to go for a shot at the Stanley Cup, but I doubt it because Malkin has nothing else to prove. Of course, if he wants to move, I say the Pens should deal him to a good team for draft picks and maybe a prospect in bank. And Letang well, I think he is as loyal but I am pretty sure he wouldn't mind playing with MTL until he is 42 as a 5th-6th Defenseman. Maybe he would be willing to get traded there if the Pens ask him. Hehe

  • I've been a Penguins fan since 1990. I can agree on your take that Hextall wrecked the Penguins, and Kyle Dubas did do a good job of getting rid of a lot of the negative assets acquired by Hextall. Having said that, the Ryan Graves contract was a self own, and while it is better that the Penguins got something instead of losing Guentzel for nothing, the return is underwhelming at best, and potentially could have been avoided if Dubas did a better job retooling the Penguins bottom six and defense.
