Why Apple Products Are Getting So Expensive

2018 ж. 1 Қар.

Apple has almost always had a reputation of pricing their products quite a bit higher than their competition, and this premium cost is commonly referred to as the Apple Tax. And it can be traced as far back as the original iPod in 2001, which had a starting price of $399, or about $570 adjusted for inflation. And when compared to other hard drive-based music players that sold for around $200, the iPod’s price was staggering. And when the iPhone was released in 2007, one of its biggest criticisms was its price, coming in at $499, or about $600 today, and that was with a two-year contract. And don’t forget the MacBook Air, which debuted with a $1,800 price tag. And that got you just 64GB of solid state storage. So the Apple tax is nothing new to longtime Apple users, but there has been an unusual trend upward in almost all Apple’s product categories over the past few years. And I think there’s more to that story than the Apple tax can account for.

At the time the Galaxy S8 was the latest Galaxy. My phone worked on all apps flawlessly but for some reason Apple Music didn't. It would keep crashing and it had so many bugs. The music kept buffering while other times it suddenly crashed. No way I'd ever pay for Apple streaming services when I can enjoy Spotify, Netflix, and Hulu just fine. Even many Apple users dont care about Apple's streaming services.

They have updated with tons of new features that most phones and tablets released in the last few years can operate. Take a look at how Facebook operates their video call services with a lot of visuals for users to use on their face: turning into a rabbit, a dragon... I can see how our old phones are slow while performing this and that is I am willing to pay extra cash to earn one of these new iPad. But why not an Android device? Please, go to Google and read about how strong these iPads are. All these Android tablet manufactures are doing is to mimic the look of iPad, not the real power of iPads. Most of them get slower just after 1 year or even shorter than that. iPads stay longer, much longer. I bought one 4 years ago and it is still running fast. I'd pay a huge bunch of money for a device to run smoothly for 4-5 years rattan than an Android tablet or phone which could possibly slow or die right after 1 year.

Even now i still prefer xperia go because old memories. Now everything i can do is just calling and texting. Not even access to email or watching youtube. I dont like how apple raise their price specially for xr vs macbook air which are entry product. Until its price unworthy then i may consider to look for some new os. Google really the most companies i ever hate, they sold user info for advertising, they use user as a lab rat for their new changing , forget every phone that is older than 1 years old. Really!? For some products, people assume the product is better if it's more expensive, even if the component parts of the product are no better than the competition (this holds especially true to things like fashion). Apple has successfully branded themselves as a premium technology company, and so people expect, and maybe even WANT Apple products to be expensive (whether it's justified by better tech or not).

Middle class individuals are having a really hard time being able to keep the money they make these days, and they don't like being taken advantage of. I have an iPhone 7plus, and although I love it I plan to switch to another phone when mine decides to give out. I can't justify the amount of money that apple is asking, and am not willing to still pay a premium price for their subpar base models. • A few notes: 1. Apple crossed the line of improving their bottom line at the expense of customer experience some time ago. 2. I’m stuck in the ecosystem, so I haven’t switched to other devices, but I have stopped purchasing new Apple products. My MacBook Pro is from 2011, and my phone is an iPhone 6 (I’ve replaced batteries in both of them - and not by paying Apple). I also have an iPhone SE, but only because I could buy it new for $38. 3. You didn’t mention the hidden price hikes. For example, by removing the headphone jack Apple forced customers to give them another $159 for headphones to achieve the very basic functionality of listen to something while charging. Something that used to be free with the included headphones. 4. I highly, highly doubt the Netflix-like service will remain free for long. Apple Music was free for awhile as well, but now it isn’t.

    @sleeknub@sleeknub5 жыл бұрын
    • Isn't n.3 borderline false? The iPhone still includes perfectly compatible earphones in the box. Also, if you want to switch ecosystems you should know that almost everything is intercompatible nowadays, things like calendars and contacts can be exported through standardized formats. Things like notes and emails are either just glorified text files (exportable as, well, text) or just remote services that will work just as well on a different ecosystem.There's a switch to Android website that shows how to do all that almost entirely automatically.

  • Constructive feedback: 1. Don't verbally use the xx9 prices. People have long adapted to this marketing BS and almost instantly read $800 when they see $799. It's different though to make quick comparisons between spoken prices, firstly because numbers are typically pronounced with a stress on the first few syllables (FOUR-HUNdred-and-(ninety)((nine)) vs. fourhundred-(and)-nineTY-NINE) and secondly because your brain just tunes out after hearing "ninety nine" for the 20th time. You once referred to the iPhone X's price as $1000 instead of $999. I would recommend doing that all the time. A typical case of accuracy vs. comprehensibility. 2. Don't use fake pictures like Tim Cook flashing dollar bills unless you're explicitly addressing the meme. It's unprofessional, and a lot of people these days sadly have lost the ability to differentiate real and fake. Maybe lastly: 3. The whole thing felt unnecessarily stretched out. You could have been much more concise, especially in the first half. I get the 10 minute magic KZhead number, but if you wanna meet that criterion while aspiring to reach a level comparable to the "big channels", the formula for success is: more information at constant density, not constant amount of information at lower density. Best of luck!

    • @@magsec5 It's such an old trick in the book, I think it's rather obsolete these days. Consumers have become much more price-aware, they can quickly check online what the market has to offer and they know what they want. Let's say you were looking for an Android phone and narrowed it down to 2 candidates, one costing $399 and the other $400. Or even $402.53. I'm pretty sure you'd go for the one you just "like" more, regardless of the minute price difference. But it wouldn't be the first time that Apple goes down. Back then Steve itself said, that they need to lower the price of the Macintosh in order to people to buy them. The company didn't listen to him so they got nearly bankrobbed. One of the most important things for a tech hardware company is, HOW MANY PEOPLE actually use their hardware. Problem solved. Get yourself some decent hardware for way less. Maybe on a Desktop or Laptop that has windows on it you install a nice dual boot linux distro that like Jobs would call it "just works" (Ubuntu is a bit bloaty, it is quiet filled Xubuntu does the job well also from Canonical, and Manjaro XFCE is also killing it, but for the bit savy people, has a lot of graphical tools like Ubuntu to). The installation is Child like simple now and you just restart with your new easily installed dual boot system for using all the windows programs that might be necessary, there you have your special environment instead of Windows if you don't need to use the exclusive Windows programs. Problem solved. All done. Bye Bye Apple.

  • 9:37 One point worth considering that wasn't raised in this video is the conservation of value in Apple's products. With the release of the iPhone X, Apple expressed a commitment to offering consistent trade-in values for previous models, citing the use of materials in the products' construction that hold their value. For instance, the 128GB iPhone 12 Pro costs $999 outright, but a four-year-old iPhone X in good condition reduces that price by up to $220 at trade-in, giving returning customers a better value for their outdated products. So, while it is expensive to get into the Apple ecosystem, staying within the ecosystem is more cost-effective. I'm not saying that justifies the prices of their devices, but it does allow customers to consider purchasing an Apple product in a certain category as an investment if you intend to purchase newer products in the same category as they are released.

  • When the Concorde SST was retired, I watched a documentary on its history. British Airways was losing money for years on their original pricing for Concorde airfare. They had set prices to be competitive with 1st-class, SUBSONIC airfare. Someone at the company realized that most of their passengers were so wealthy, their secretary or assistant made their arrangements. The passengers had no idea what a ticket cost (~$2,500, in '84-dollars). So, British Airways SURVEYED THE PASSENGERS: how much do you think your ticket cost? Their answers... DOUBLED THE PRICE. So much for the "exceptionalism" of the top 1%. Apple's customers tend to be, also... from their money... easily parted.

As of the next few years. I’m going to leave Apple entirely. I won’t endorse this unnecessary and stupid Apple tax. I honestly don’t think Apples products are good enough to justify the price. I’m a normal person on an okay to good salary in Britain. I probably would’ve bought the series 4 if it was priced the same as before. I haven’t as the price is so high it’s hard to justify. I did buy the XS Max Which I now regret and wish I bought the XR. I think my love for Apple has died. Apple offers 64GB phones and iPads in 2018???? What?????? Apple offers 128gb laptops and desktops in 2018???? What????? I think Microsoft now seems like a better company for value for money. Apple in my mind is now for the 1% of the 1%. I didn’t mind a small apple tax but I’m finding apples current pricing and offerings making me sick. Phone wise I actually wish I had a phone like the One Plus 6. It’s so fast and so cheap. My XS max is twice the price but not twice as good. Laptop wise I think Microsoft and Dell are making some good hardware. I hate the fact there is so little competition in the Apple Watch market. That bugs me. Come on google and Microsoft. AirPods are also on their own and have no competition. The Apple Watch series 2 and air pods were fantastic products. I’m hoping over the next 2 years. There is more competition so I can fully switch away from Apple perhaps to Google or One Plus.

  • At some point, they will price themselves out of business. Not just Apple, but all tech companies. Even the "cutting edge tech" will no longer be justification for buying a new gadget. In reality, these "innovations" aren't truly innovative. We still use the same interface, still the same click, drag, spread, pinch, and swipe - BORING, and still use the same batteries that seem to die even faster than previous generations. And yet we are still fooled into thinking next year's model will be better? I've been over the tech craze for three years now. I no longer buy the latest and greatest when they're immediately released, nor even after waiting three months for the real life reviews. Apple isn't the only company pulling your leg. Nothing is groundbreaking anymore in an age where tech gadgets get updated every three months just for the sake of sales. Honestly, I would much rather spend money on a product I know will give me 10 years minimum of reliable use. But since tech cannot guarantee that, I won't be lining up at stores on release day anytime soon.

    @opwave79@opwave795 жыл бұрын
    • I do not agree, let me give you my opinion. These companies really understand price elasticity and I'm sure Apple keeps moving the same or more units to the market at a higher price. They really know what the consumer expects and is able to pay and the second they feel the consumer is backing out they will re adjust. I hope this starts soon but I will not put money on it because with every new model and new price brackets they just keep selling more and more units. I'm an Apple full range consumer and I pay this because I know Apple products last me a long, long time. Consumer demand dictates price. I work for a really big company that exercises this too well. Retail prices are built top to bottom now starting with what the consumer is actually eager to pay for a pair of sneakers and then that way you downscale to FOB/cost pricing. This is healthy because it builds a pull strategy for product instead of pushing product to the market. When we, as consumers, stop paying high ticketed items the prices will go lower. Are we doing this? No. Take cars for example, a Toyota Corolla was always a low priced economy vehicle but as reliability and consumer demand grew the prices also went up to actual prices where a basic model can cost up to $20k! That is not economy! What you are doing is actually the best strategy, buy what you need when you need it, not a minute sooner.

And the iPad I have now has been with me for 3 years. It’s the old iPad Pro, and my previous one was THE ORIGINAL IPAD 2. So I didn’t upgrade straight away.and I’m not upgrading anytime soon.

  • At least this past year they lowered the baseline phone by $50 and yet made a clearly better product with the iPhone 11, which is $700 not $750. With that you get an extra camera on the back, a better battery life, an almost double pixel increase to your front camera, an extra large screen than their lower priced flagship pro phone, and the brand new A 13 bionic chip! This was the phone that finally convinced me to actually pay their higher priced phones for the first time since me buying and using the excellent iPhone SE. Maybe they are finally coming to see the reality that there is a limit to what people will pay for. I love the iPHone 11, and all that it has to offer. The eco-system that Apple offers is still the very best out there. And the loyalty is there because of the general quality of their products.

    • you know, here in Russia we have a proverb saying, "the higher you're flying, the more painful it is to fall down back to the ground". this is exactly what's happened to Apple these weeks. when Jobs visited Mossberg at D8, just prior to that, back in 2010, apple has surpassed msft in market valuation. and what do we have today? among the 4 hugest IT-giants of the US market, apple has the smallest market valuation: AMZN 829B, MSFT 826B, ALPHABET(Google) 766B, and finally AAPL 741B. what I also don't like is that apple is not going to lower prices on the markets where avg salary is times smaller compared with American. Again, here in Russia in the regions (I mean except for Moscow and SPB) avg salary of a middle class person is not that high (up to 30000 roubles probably). At the same time, setting price for iPhone Xs Max for as high as 129000 roubles makes it extermely expensive for like most of the midclass citizens. Who do Apple expect to buy such a pricy thing? A few dozens of children of the rich dudes? But this is not enough obviously to ensure good level of sales. People whom I know have changed tactic from getting a new iPhone to obtaining a used one from other people's hands. Or even switch to Android devices. and these are not just fluctuations, this is a tendency I can clearly see. final line: Apple must re-consider their price and product strategies. if they fail, they could find themselves one day on the graveyard of the tech world :(

Now, it's not recommended to ever put it in your backpack because it's so fragile! The newest I phone is also really expensive and doesn't live up to many "claims" made by Apple. I'll just keep using my old I pad & I phone until Apple makes them unusable (by design) After that, it's time to switch name brands for all my portable electronics. I used to be a fan of most Apple products but that's come to an end!

  • Part of Apple's strategy is showing the cheapest models with low speed and capacity to convince customers to upgrade parts, thus spending more. Or recently by selling dongles. The shift certainly was obvious under Tim Cook, but Cook managed to double Apple's revenue and profit. In fact Cook is doing a great job at that. So mind that Cook is not about great products, as Jobs was, but about great profits.

  • After 10 years of I phone ownership, last year I switched to Samsung Galaxy S8+. This was the result of reaching the conclusion that Apple is taking advantage of consumers like me by keeping the same design with minor changes and marking it up. Look at I phone 6, 6S, 7, 8. All are very similar in every aspect with a little bit of higher resolution cameras and faster chip. Needless to say the prices got bumped significantly higher and higher. That is how Apple could afford to have nearly $200 billion dollars cash available in their accounts. Unfortunately for the consumers as commented by another viewer of this video, there are plenty of i sheep out there. The part that I am proud of myself is convincing 4 of my friends to switch from I phone to Samsung S8. Now in all honesty, I do miss the ease of use of an I phone. Especially since I still own an I pad. However, I am a true believer in standing up for your rights and defending it rather than letting a greedy corporation like Apple sticking it to me. I hope this will awaken some i sheep out there in order to make a better change for everyone. Respectfully, Ron
