I stopped ranking SNSD after 2015 because they are past the point of being ranked.
The ranking is not made to be competitive, I just wanted to make this video to compile a massive ranking of girl group history. The female side of the Korean pop industry is brutally tough and popularity can change easily. All of these women deserve recognition for their accomplishments to spread the Hallyu Wave. @ksector7902 Sadly I don't think WJSN ever made it big in South Korea. IIRC they had a bit more success in China before K-pop got banned there, so they were unlucky.

@@byakuya786 T-ARA debuted in 2009 with 6 members, Qri, Boram, Soyeon, EUnjung, Hyomin and Jiyeon, after 2 years when they group was gaining a lot of popularity and started to be competition for SNSD, cimpany MBK decided to add a 7th member "Hwayoung", this girl after a couple of comebacks took advantage of roumors about members making her feel apart of the group and started to pretend things that make member looks like they were buIIeing her, all kpop fans went crazy against the members and after that they start to lose popularity and get hate all over internet and fans making black ocean and other stuff top them, they were compiting for top with SNSD and after that never get a win again, until 5 years later, when some ex MBK staff members that worked with T-ARA for several years they showed proofs about Hwayung was lying th whole time, and she was the toxic, being agresive and hummillating the stylish staff members, and they also comented she and her twin sister treatened Areum (the 8th member) to quit the group after Hwayoung get expelled from it. in 2017 they won again after all the truth came to the public eye. and at Incheon 2017 Korean audience fanchant laud to them as a sorry for all these. During those 5 years Hwayung also know as "the snake" kept playing victim without giving any details just increasing the bad comments against T-ARA and getting this as a push up for her new Actress Carrier, after the truth was knowed by everyone she started to get call for acting jobs.

SNSD reigned the most for 7 years(2009-15) Secondly,TWICE ruled for 4 years(2016-2019) Notably,BLACKPINK took the crown in a new decade from 2020 til 2022.
Looks like it's going to be NewJeans for a little while here too unless Babymonster, LeSerrafim, or Ive manages to do something big. I don't see the other GG's overtaking NJ for some time.

I mean its kinda simple, they went to US, snsd rising to the stardom with Gee and Genie. SK only have one spot for nations girlgroup and snsd occupy thay spot while WG trying for US market. And when theyre back, snsd already dominated the SK market, WG didnt even have a chance, plus there are lot of rising gg like Fx and 2ne1.
@@uc6758 Yeah it was honestly just too early to go to the US, globalization and social media, which has really helped kpop expand, was not what it is today. But also from what I understand songs after their return, like 2 different tears, Be My Baby, Like this, were still moderate hits, just not giant ones like their previous ones, and as you said other GGs had taken over. But I'm also glad that they took their time, rebranded, and released Reboot, one of my all time favourite kpop albums, and then had a big hit with Why so Lonely.

I don't mean to get sentimental but this video made me tear up a bit. I got into kpop around the beginning of 2nd gen but there are so many prior groups that I never even realized I was already listening to as a tiny kid. I'm in awe of seeing how much kpop has evolved over the years and though I get a little apprehensive with the market saturation and erratic fan culture,I do love seeing the growth in popularity. Its like watching an old friend mature into something even greater. The nostalgia is beating the crap out of my heart right now!! tysm!😭

I'm your girl by S.E.S and Step by KARA are by far my most favorite kpop girl group songs of all time. Also KARA, Sistar and 2NE1 have great discographies and I'll never forget them. Still to this day listen to them and watch their concerts. In my opinion, NewJeans is #1 in 2023 for Korea. In my updated video, they are #1, IVE is #2, and Blackpink is #3 in Korea. Also I think Blackpink’s reign started in 2020 not 2019.

I think in this whole list T-ara is the one that was making to the top being the 2nd most popular girl group in 2012 to being 13 at 2013. All because of 1 delusional and snake member Hwayoung. If there was not such controversy then T-ara would have been able to make to the top the following years. Such a bad luck to this group… But huge respect to them, they were active until 2021 after all the misunderstanding was clear. Love them….❤

@@jorgeenriqueponce2978honestly in 2011 and 2012 snsd 2ne1 and t-ara all had really incredible achievements where it’s quite hard to rank. t-ara had the biggest and most successful hits while 2ne1 and snsd were more popular internationally and had more established fandoms
@@jorgeenriqueponce2978 2NE1 really only excelled in the music side of the entertainment industry, and that's on YG for restricting their promotion to just music shows, concerts etc. The reason why Koreans regard T-ara above because they excelled not only in music, but they are also sought after for CFs, dramas/movies, reality TVs which basically give them a bigger presence in the industry over 2NE1. Also, most groups from 2nd generation were venturing either into Japan/China, which T-ara again had better results in those 2 markets over 2NE1.
I wasn't a kpop stan in 2nd generation era but if I ever have to choose a girl group then it will always be 'Girls Generation' for me❤

They were supposed to be TVXQ's sister band. But with TVXQ's scandal (and JYJ leaving), SMent also mishandled CSJH, totally gave up on them, and just focused on debuting SNSD instead (which in hindsight proved a really good investment decision on their part).

I first heard T-pop, K-pop and J-pop in 2003. I was working in Taiwan when I heard Boa in a Tainan record store. Had a small interest in Boa until 2006 when I left Taiwan. I rediscovered K-pop in 2016 from listening to Taeyeon singing Can you hear me an OST song. Have been a K-pop fan since 2016. Thanks to Boa and then Taeyeon. So far have seen several K-pop artists perform live. I stan Taeyeon, Mamamoo❤, Chung-Ha and G-idle. I also like IU, AOA, Kara and many other groups. My dream is to see Taeyeon❤ sing live in concert.

2021 was Aespa year let’s be real, they had the biggest hit that year, same with 2017 which should’ve be red velvet.
Biggest hit does not mean most popular group. This is a video ranking the most groups. aespa and RV being #2 in 2021 and 2017 respectively is already super high and impressive! miss A’s Bad Girl Good Girl was the biggest hit of 2010, T-ARA’s Roly-Poly was the biggest hit of 2011, Brave Girls’ Rollin was the biggest hit of 2021. None of those groups were the most popular groups that year. Crayon Pop’s Bar Bar Bar was one of the biggest hits of 2013 and I didn’t even include them in this list.

There was nothing any girl group could have done to knock BP from that #1 spot in 2021. Them being second is already very impressive!!! aespa was perhaps the most trendy girl group of 2021 (them or Brave Girls). The group that exploded in popularity. But the most popular would still be BP.

If we look at people listen to music than aespa beat blackpink that year. And Brave Girls had even more listenings than blackpink and aespa combined. With We ride, rollin and cmbr - 3 songs in the top 10. i think that was only beaten later by newjeans or one of the other new groups. im not so familiar with 4th gen. of course this was only for korea. internationally blackpink was allways far ahead.
@@ludwigneigl891 There is more to popularity than music. As a group, Blackpink was more popular in Korea in 2021 than everyone else. Musically, yes I do agree. aespa and Brave Girls (and Oh My Girl) were the strongest girl groups digitally in 2021. However, digital performance is just one metric and doesn’t mean determine overall popularity. Random example but Britney Spears did pretty badly on the US Billboard Hot 100 charts for most of her peak (1999-2004). She was probably the most famous female singer in the entire world at that time.
I have always loved T-ARA, and I love reminiscing about the past through the clips in this video, but being reminded again of how T-ARA went from SECOND to 12TH in one year just because of the lies spewed to the public by that snake Hwayoung bothered me again, ngl. Great video though.
Thank you! Yes T-ARA’s decline was really unfortunate. I still can’t believe a fabricated scandal did so much damage to their career. Their post scandal songs like Sexy Love, Number Nine, Do You Know Me, and Sugar Free are really good and would have been big hits if the scandal didn’t happen. Eunjung and Jiyeon would have had a much bigger acting career too.

I don't think they have. I think their popularity has been stagnant but not so depressingly less than it was. There's just so many new groups that are really going viral east and west. Twice seems more focused on just doing instead of aiming to be viral. Sorta how I feel about red velvet. When I first became a Stan of them. The big 3 groups were Twice, BP, and RV. One from each big 3 company... But now it's always Twice, BP, and whatever popular group at the time.
@@annapandalee4915Twice’s popularity is growing internationally but it has been decreasing in Korea since late 2019. In 2019-2021 it was subtle but they have decreased significantly by 2022-2023. The 4th gen girlies have taken over and the public slowly lost interest unfortunately. However, they are still super popular internationally.
@soneparadise2007 Exactly, they have gone a lot to the US, even went to promote With YOU-th, but they just performed a little bit in Korea after but it's not like before, we don't see them in variety shows anymore, they lost one spark to le sserafim(their song it's really good at least), this weekend if I'm not mistaken they are going to perform in Vegas again...

Damn 2009 was a phenomenal year for the girls. The top ten was full of bangers. Thank you for sharing, really enjoyed going down memory lane especially since my interest in Kpop greatly declined after 2012. But before that, damn was i in it from 2003-2012.

Hmm, I discovered K-pop in 2019, and immediately, my two favorites were EXID and Red Velvet. Then, it was Apink, Loona, Twice, WJSN the Cosmic girls, Oh My Girl, IU, April, and Dia. I like the 3rd generation K-pop girl groups, but I have an extensive collection including the 1st and 2nd generation SES, Finkl, Girls Generation, Miss A, Beste, Sistar, and Brown Eyed Girls. But my favorite became the Lovelyz, who I found a month before they disbanded. I can spend my whole day listening to them. The Lovelyz are the only Girl Group that I have every version of their albums, their concerts, all member signed albums and a light stick. They are the only girl group that I have an album saved and an album to flip through and look at. With a few exceptions, I could probably sell my entire K-pop album collection. The Lovelyz and The Beatles albums are the ones that I would take with me if I was ever stuck on a desert island.

We can see the choreographies before GIRLS GENERATION were choreographies for girls but when GG arrived everything exploded they did a great job all together they turned on the stage their super good songs and the super powerful choreographies
