  • It’s crazy how a piano piece can be so perfectly transitioned into an orchestral form to create perhaps a more famous version of it. You almost never see it go in that direction. It feels as if Liszt hears an orchestra in his head when he’s writing and performing piano.

    • What a wonderful Papa you had. Thank you for sharing your thought. If music be the fruit of love, said Shakespeare, play on. Music is the fruit of love, and God is love, and Lizst was surely tapping into that particular aspect of love, and transmitting that power as you put it, to audiences then, and audiences today. It energizes me with hope, Heaven originating potentiating energy, my definition of hope- H.O.P.E.

  • My earliest memory of this sublime piece comes from Walt Disney's film, Water Birds, in the late 1950s or early '60s. Their in-house orchestra was much simpler than the one here but was more than adequate for teaming with the editing of the visual images. I credit that movie with planting seeds of interest in me of birds and birding as well as an appreciation for uplifting music. Many years later I purchased the movie to show students in my biology classes, hoping more seeds would sprout in them. To this day I can't see Western Grebes without recalling this movie or hear this piece around the 7:30 mark without seeing Western Grebes scurrying across a lake in their courtship dance. Thank you Franz Liszt--and Walt Disney--for such a positive effect upon my life!
