  • The more I watch this fight, the more I think about the unsung hero of The Raid movies: the editing. It doesn't try for one-shot, it doesn't quick cut the audience into nausea. It keeps the shots as long as they need to be kept. It's frenetic while remaining completely coherent. The audience is never lost. The action is never wasted. The editing adds to the experience, completely in service to the fight.

Great musical accompaniment and camerawork add tension and dynamics to this scene. The choreography of kitchen fight took 8 days. Iko Uwais trained with the rest of fighters for 6 months. • One of the best part about this is the Assassin starts off acting like this is fun. He squares up Rama, he's smiling, he's treating this as a game. He knows Rama is highly skilled, he's finally found someone that will give him entertainment, there's some respect BUT he thinks he's still better. Rama quickly proves he's more than that, and the Assassin starts realizing that he might lose and takes it seriously.

  • Two things I like about the "Raid" movies: 1.) Rama is not perfect at all, as a person or as a fighter. As opposed to a typical martial arts movie where the hero breezes through the minions and only gets hurt fighting the big boss at the end, Rama takes his lumps and gets all kinds of hurt in these movies. Makes his victories more plausible for me because he works hard for every one of them. 2.) I get the feeling that Rama *hates* killing and regrets every death he causes, if the expression on his face at times like that is any indicator. I can almost hear him thinking "Man...did I *have* to do that," or "I can't believe I just did that," in those scenes immediately after he kills someone. It makes him more human and vulnerable, for me, and I appreciate that little detail in his character.

There were several clear knockout blows that both fighters delivered to each other. The most egregious thing is the number of times they restand one another to continue the fighting on their feet for the sake of the cinematography. In a real fight, that doesn't happen. As the fight when on though, it became very clear that Rama was far better of a martial artist, and that the assassin was never going to beat him legitimately. I think that is proven by the fact that the assassin resorts to his karambit knives. Not to mention, getting pummeled over and over tends to piss you off. Thirdly, Rama holds his arm in place so he doesn't get cut with the blade. Lastly, in the end, Rama slashes both of his arms so he has no chance of making a final attack, this gives Rama his last cut to finish the job. Great strategy.
