Looking back at the career of Dominik Hasek.
If any doubts lingered about Hasek's dominance after he established himself with the Buffalo Sabres, his remarkable showing for the Czech Republic at the 1998 Olympics quashed them all.
In what he deems his crowning athletic achievement, Hasek propelled the Czechs to gold, boasting a 0.97 GAA and a .961 save percentage.
He conceded just two goals in the Czech's final three games against hockey powerhouses the United States, Canada and Russia.
In the semi-final shootout against Canada, Hasek out-dueled Patrick Roy, denying Theo Fleury, Ray Bourque, Joe Nieuwendyk, Eric Lindros and Brendan Shanahan in succession.
At a spirited rally in Old Town Square, a throng of 70,000 Czechs erupted into chants of "Hasek to the Castle!"
Includes Dominik Hasek highlights, Buffalo Sabres highlights, Detroit Red Wings highlights, Ottawa Senators highlights and Olympic hockey highlights.

From 1996-2001 he was the single reason the Sabres was a play-off contender due to a offensive tallent lacking roster and yet they came so far and even the finals in 1999 (!).

    • The other greats of the time were extremely good no doubt. But Broduer and Roy spent their best years behind stacked teams, which definitely make their lives easier, and helped their stats. The Avs won a cup in '96 and '01, and The Devils won in '00 and '03. Hasek spent his prime between a pretty pedestrian Buffalo team, who did make the finals once - but largely due to Hasek playing out of this world. His save% that season after 64 games was a .937... So while Buffalo did make the finals once, it was because Hasek dragged them there. He played for that team for a decade while putting up equal or better numbers compared to the other top goalies who played for dramatically better teams.

    • @user-mt5lh9mj9b He definitely carried MTL to that cup. However, I was more pointing out his numbers are what make him great, and playing for Colorado - certainly helped. His career was basically split between MTL and Colorado. When he played for MTL his numbers were average to slightly above average. He was good for sure, but not really it the discussion of being "one of the greats". After going to Colorado and putting up +.910 for almost 10 straight seasons... well yeah, the conversation changed dramatically. Now he's awesome. But to get to that point he went from a pretty meh MTL team.. to a stacked Colorado team with a few future hall of famers on the roster. Hasek was putting up crazy numbers.. behind a pretty average, or sometimes pretty crappy - Buffalo team. Imagine Haseks numbers if he had the same fortune as Roy or Broduer and ending up on a stacked team. My comment wasn't to discount the other great Gs at that time. But it was to point out Hasek was putting up crazy numbers, on a much weaker team.
