Looking back at the career of Dominik Hasek.
If any doubts lingered about Hasek's dominance after he established himself with the Buffalo Sabres, his remarkable showing for the Czech Republic at the 1998 Olympics quashed them all.
In what he deems his crowning athletic achievement, Hasek propelled the Czechs to gold, boasting a 0.97 GAA and a .961 save percentage.
He conceded just two goals in the Czech's final three games against hockey powerhouses the United States, Canada and Russia.
In the semi-final shootout against Canada, Hasek out-dueled Patrick Roy, denying Theo Fleury, Ray Bourque, Joe Nieuwendyk, Eric Lindros and Brendan Shanahan in succession.
At a spirited rally in Old Town Square, a throng of 70,000 Czechs erupted into chants of "Hasek to the Castle!"

Every mini stick goalie tried to resemble Hasek’s style.
To be fair.. It was basically the only way to play mini-stick goalie. It's more like he took mini stick goaltending and ripped it off lol.
My dad special ordered my goalie sticks from tps with the Hasek style curve n all
i used to claim to be the dominik hasek of mini stick hockey
Greatest of all time, no question.
💯
Lets not get crazy, arguably greatest of all time. But definitely on Mount Rushmore when it comes to goalies with Roy, Brodeur, and the fourth is tough, Plante? Sawchuk? Fuhr? Dryden (only few seasons for him, but boy, his numbers in those eight seasons are ridiculous).
@@hellbach6268 With all due respect... it's not even close. The way he singlehandedly manhandled Team Canada in 98 is just one of his otherworldly performances against all odds.
@@hellbach6268 take off your north american glasses and think again. He is right. Hasek is the Goalies GOAT!!!
Tretiak is #1. Never played in the NHL and was still inducted into the Hall of Fame
When he came to Detroit for his 1st cup, I knew the second he had signed we were going to win!
same. what a run that was.
Thanks Ozzy
that man was a BEAST IN THE NET!
To me he is the GOAT. 1.13 GAA in the Stanley Cup Finals Best Save Percentage of all time. Best GAA of all time. Leading both Buffalo to a Stanley Cup Final and Czech Republic to Gold. He was just special. I love Roy, Brodeur, Lundquist, Sawchuck and all the other greats, but Hasek outshined everyone!
thank you! Great homage!! Hašek is GOAT!!!
Was so fun to watch
As a Sabres fan, Dom was right. Buffalo just didn't have it to win the cup. I'm glad he won 2 and gold, Dom deserved them !
That foot in the crease was heartbreaking. They didn't even review it. Everyone immediately came onto the ice to celebrate and that was it. Just a sinking feeling watching that game.
I was a goalie myself when I was younger and my favourite NHL goalies were Hasek, Irbe and Habibulin.
Irbe was the man! I lived in Vancouver and saw him the one season that he was here but that team was an absolute dumpster fire and he was the 5th or 6th goalie to start during that year and he was an absolute rock in net, iirc he finished the season as the starter. Super underrated goalie for sure!
That man had the most dominant prime ever from a goalie
He had the most dominant CAREER ever. Glad I was around to watch it from Buffalo for his entire career!
I love the dominator but I love it even more that it was my favorite team that got Hasek the cup, even in a season where he was essentially the playoffs backup.
Yeah watching this dude on the Red wings is what made me a hockey fan
What many people seem to forget in my experience compared to other great goalies is that Dominik Hasek was great of all greats despite playing on a weaker team (Buffalo Sabres). From 1996-2001 he was the single reason the Sabres was a play-off contender due to a offensive tallent lacking roster and yet they came so far and even the finals in 1999 (!).
There no changing my mind that Hasek is the best goalie of all time.
@@snc237 Amen !!!
Sabres offense was hasek stopping more pucks than the other team lol
@@paulio7250 Ha-ha so true! That was how they won. Incredible.
Hasek will forever be my favorite NHL player
I watched every game of the 2001/2002 season in Detroit. I lost my job and got to watch the Wings whole season. It was a lot of fun watching Hasek play.
Hašek has unique style. Special on Sabres show some saves that they will be in history forever.
Should have said "larger than life equipment" lol. Still is the GOAT though.
He is the reason I became a Sabres Fan.
Don’t you play for the Rangers??? lol jk
Great video!
“Having a spine like a ‘slinky’…priceless.”
That puck slap he use to do two break it out of the zone was wild.
I just pulled a Hasek rookie card from an old unopened pack, for my wife. His style is what got her interested in hockey, thankfully!
He was one of the main reasons I became a Sabres fan back in the day :) Collected hockey cards back in those days, probably have over 100 different ones with Hasek.
Everybody like Dominik Hasek.
As someone who played goalie and put a lot of effort into learning to do it well, Hasek made me unreasonably angry... He did everything wrong, positioning, stance, movement, everything was wrong. Yet he was so freaking skilled and athletic that none of that mattered...
I don’t think his positioning was wrong. Like technically it was but that because thats what he wanted you to think. He played psychological warfare.. also helped he could bend and move in ungodly ways lol
Guess that means he was doing that right, and others were doing it wrong -- despite popular opinion to the contrary. Remember that the bottom of the pyramid is always larger.
The man was awesome to watch!!!
Loved in Detroit.
Kind of cool that I ended up being in this video. Thanks to Dave and Adams!
Awesome video!
Seems like a chill guy. Nice video, good presentation 👍
Believe me. He is not a chill guy. His personality sucks.
Stopped following hockey in the 90s, I'm glad he had an amazing career.
He sealed the lower part of the crease like no other.
Great video. Couple small notes. In Chicago he worked with Vladislav Tretiak the former Soviet great and goalie whisperer (Hasek/Belfour/Brodeur/Theodore). Tretiak was likely the best goalie never to play in NHL. After the 2002 cup run, Hasek retired for the first time.
Thanks!
GOAT, Red Wings fan here
Blackhawks legend Dominik Hasek
great video, got a subscriber here
GOAT of goalies. No questions asked.
Thank God for closed captions.
Him and Osgood were dangerous for opponents back in his Red Wings days
GOAT
great vid, keep it going
Thanks!
I miss my tps pads
He was my idle growing up
He was your ***idol* growing up.
@@JesusFriedChristWho cares
Is that Deal in the background?!
Great video, its going to blow up🚀
Appreciate it!
Legend
Ashamed to admit I forgot that he was the starter all the way through in 2002. Blank spot for sure. Also didn't know he won in the K at at 46. Stud of studs.
"Hasek" was used as a catchphrase as kids to call any impossible save in anything.
He would flop around but it worked! He was fun to watch!
My idol
Hasek is the only goalie in the hockey history who could actually carry the team.
Pretty much every goalie on a cup winning team can say this. Can't win without a hot goalie, just ask the oilers.
Now I know where or who EA tried to mimic in NHL 24 with their goalie animations. I routinely have saves made against me with all these moves
Lol.. we always jokingly referred to him as "the spring-loaded goalie." If you even GRAZED the guy, pads would go flying in every direction.
I knew he was good but this really puts his reign into perspective. Not to bash the other greats but they seem overrated when compared to the Dominator
The other greats of the time were extremely good no doubt. But Broduer and Roy spent their best years behind stacked teams, which definitely make their lives easier, and helped their stats. The Avs won a cup in '96 and '01, and The Devils won in '00 and '03. Hasek spent his prime between a pretty pedestrian Buffalo team, who did make the finals once - but largely due to Hasek playing out of this world. His save% that season after 64 games was a .937... So while Buffalo did make the finals once, it was because Hasek dragged them there. He played for that team for a decade while putting up equal or better numbers compared to the other top goalies who played for dramatically better teams.
Hasek prime years was on a bubble playoff team. It also didn’t help he started on the nhl when he was already 27 or something like that. Best goalie ever
@@bmir89But in 93, Roy basically won the cup by himself.
@user-mt5lh9mj9b He definitely carried MTL to that cup. However, I was more pointing out his numbers are what make him great, and playing for Colorado - certainly helped. His career was basically split between MTL and Colorado. When he played for MTL his numbers were average to slightly above average. He was good for sure, but not really it the discussion of being "one of the greats". After going to Colorado and putting up +.910 for almost 10 straight seasons... well yeah, the conversation changed dramatically. Now he's awesome. But to get to that point he went from a pretty meh MTL team.. to a stacked Colorado team with a few future hall of famers on the roster. Hasek was putting up crazy numbers.. behind a pretty average, or sometimes pretty crappy - Buffalo team. Imagine Haseks numbers if he had the same fortune as Roy or Broduer and ending up on a stacked team. My comment wasn't to discount the other great Gs at that time. But it was to point out Hasek was putting up crazy numbers, on a much weaker team.
@@bmir89 Yea youre right. I should have specified. Roy had stacked teams in general and we cant compared it to hasek's teams.
Third highest "Point Shares" Per Game among goalies behind Ken Dryden and Tim Thomas. For skaters, the top 5 are 1) Orr, 2) Mario, 3) Howie Morenz, 4) Eddie Shore, 5) Connor McDavid
1. Hasek 2. Brodeur 3. Roy
The best to ever do it
🐐!!!
Did you use a Grateful Dead backing track for this? Deal?
That's right!
Tryna tell me the super fan didn’t know the rules of the event and doesn’t have an excess of hockey memorabilia?
More like… Dominate Hasek 🎉
Prob would of won a cup with ottawa to if he didn't get hurt at Olympics, this is one reason they don't wanna send nhl players
The only thing we had in buffalo sports. Bills always sucked a$$
Patrick Roy? Patrick Roy was a prototypical pillow fort playing behind a solid defense taking shots from the outside. When Montreal went to shit he was shredded. If teams had been reversed Hasek would have a lot more rings and Roy would have been forgotten. Roy sure as hell didn't have the skill to carry a team as bad as the Sabers.
hey DOPE, Patrick won 2 cups in Colorado. Amnesia victim
0.97 GGA in the Olympics.. A team cannot win by scoring less than a goal
It actually didn't set a standard, no one else uses his style.
Regular season GOAT.
He nearly single handedly won Buffalo a Cup. He is the 🐐 period!
I personally liked Hasek better than Osgood
I wonder what will happen If he actually ventures into politics. He's losing sympathies of people very quickly with his statements lately.
Roy sucks! Hasek is better and everyone knows it!
Blbeczek🤮
Great goalie. Terrible human
Not as good as Roy though.
Great video!
Thanks!
