Global National: May 2, 2024 | Police recordings offer new insight into Highway 401 wrong-way chase
Police radio recordings are providing new details about the high-speed pursuit going the wrong way on Highway 401 east of Toronto, killing a baby boy and his grandparents. Mike Drolet explains who else was in the vehicle with the victims; what a senior police officer tried to do just before the moment of impact and the province's rules on police pursuits.
The biggest pro-Palestinian encampment on a Canadian post-secondary campus is at McGill University, which is now being met by a counter-protest from pro-Israeli demonstrators. Mike Armstrong reports on how the situation is evolving and what Quebec Premier François Legault is calling for.
U.S. authorities and post-secondary schools are struggling to restore order, where pro-Palestinian protesters are refusing to give in. Jackson Proskow reports on the overnight arrests made at UCLA, the mounting frustration at other institutions and the challenge of how to deal with the unrest peacefully.
While Hamas weighs its response to a ceasefire proposal that would trigger a hostage-prisoner swap and pause the fighting in the Gaza Strip, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says a deal will not affect his country's planned ground offensive into Rafah. Crystal Goomansingh reports on where negotiations stand, the pressure on Netanyahu to de-escalate and where Israeli military vehicles have started to gather.
The Ontario government has ordered INEOS Styrolution to keep its chemical plant in Sarnia closed until the province is satisfied it can operate more safely. As Carolyn Jarvis reports, the order follows numerous complaints from people in neighbouring Aamjiwnaang First Nation, who say they became sick after high levels of the cancer-causing chemical benzene were detected in the air.
Carbon emissions in Canada in 2022 were the lowest they have been in 25 years, excluding the first two years of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to new federal data. Ottawa boasts its climate policies are working, so Mackenzie Gray has a reality check on whether Canada is actually on track to meet its emission reduction targets.
Plus, historians are drawing comparisons between the pro-Palestinian student protests spreading across post-secondary campuses and previous demonstrations against America's involvement in the Vietnam War. Eric Sorensen explores the similarities and differences of these movements.

The chase was careless, irresponsible, and obviously dangerous. The arrogance of that cop defying orders to abort the chase, thinking that his lights would be enough. This particular cop should be charged with murder. It was a robbery, not a violent crime that endangered the public, that cop endangered the public. 4 people died, and families were forever destroyed because of one cops arrogance. Unacceptable!
I bet you he still sleeps at night with no problems 😂😂😂
Robbery is a violent crime, by definition. The definition of robbery in Canadian law is theft committed with violence, or with the threat of violence (usually the display or threat to use a weapon). Yes, it should have been called off. The van probably still would have collided with a vehicle and these deaths probably still would have occurred. There is no reasonable prospect of a conviction for any kind of homicide against the police officer as the crown would have to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the deaths would not have occured if not for the police officer's action. No judge or jury could possibly convict him.
It's a sad sentiment when common sense is no longer common. Especially in this particular case. There was no threat to the general public, and with the use of air support, the van would have likely been found. That chase didn't warrant the death of innocent people. It was careless, irresponsible, and unprofessional. All factors were obviously not taken into account. There was no danger to the public until that cop decided to take it upon himself to pursue the van going the wrong way on a major highway. His judgment, or lack of, speaks volumes about the cop.

@@canuckfixit7722 except you agreed with #4. You haven't said a single thing that disagrees with my assertion (an educated opinion based on my knowledge of the law in Canada) that there is no reasonable prospect of conviction. You then talked about administrative punishments and lessons learned, which are items I never addressed and you have no evidence to suggest that I disagree with.
Senseless chase there must be consequences for the involved
How are you supposed to respond to an oncoming vehicle flashing it's lights going 80mph?!
Actually more like 150 mph (or 240 km).... Relative velocity
Ah yes!
Rest in eternal love to those beautiful innocent souls😢❤ the police need to be sued. Unimaginable pain those parents are feeling :( praying for their strength.
Toronto Star? They only say what they are told.
Take your protest and go do it in your own damn country

That’s very sad and Heartbreaking in Ontario Canada 🇨🇦
Does Anyone else think Guilbeault makes stuff up?
100% - This is the same zealot who climbed the CN Tower and was on top of Ralph Klein's house terrifying his wife. He's making up "climate emergency" stats out of thin air.
Absolutely
Guess who's getting fired!!!!
What about the ineos workers?......
Police should have stop the chase endangering more lives
You just contradicted yourself
im all for canada to make money but not at the expence of hurting first nations communities
Any community. I was trained as a lab assistant and benzene is very nasty stuff causing cancer. It can be absorbed even through your skin.
I thought the SOLE reason the police were not participating was due to the "DEFUNCT the police" protest 3 years ago.

Even if police stopped the pursuit, this guy would've kept goibg at top speed. Just because cops aren't behind him anymore he knows they'll be waiting up ahead. So he'll keep going hard in hopes to lose them. This guy had nothing to lose. Cops should've tried to stop him before the hwy, anyway they can knowing that's where he was headed
There was absolutely NO reason to continue the pursuit by car when helicopters can track the suspect without endangering the Public. The officer in question needs to be charged with Reckless Endangerment and Negligent Manslaughter, at the very least. Police policy, training and practices are all too often shown to be seriously lacking.
No more Covid 19 deaths and cases in the world 🌍 please for the love of Christ please talk about normal stuff please and thank you
Why is Canada taking those types of people and only them as opposed to nice Europeans ?
yes big big mistake.
Racist much? :/
This pursuit was a difficult one for sure. Do you try to warn the public with your lights or do you just let him go. Either way there was bound to be a crash. Most police are really fed up with our catch and release system of justice. No wonder we can’t get people to be police anymore! It’s going to get a lot worse before this starts to turn around. Thankfully me and my family don’t live in a crime infested cesspool of a big city.
Tell us where you lifen ( 'not crime infested' ) so we can move there.
Greasy or extra butter
The "...rules and laws..." apparently don't apply to Israel.
I have to say, the police chase was very aggressive even compared to what takes place in Los Angeles. A police helicopter should have been deployed and the officers should have gone to tracking mode. This could have had a much different out come. BTW the PIT maneuver can not be done safely at speeds over 35 mph. CHP and LASD don’t permit the PIT at freeway speeds. Both departments would have gone to helicopter tracking mode for the entire duration this chase took place before re-engaging the pursuit.
This is why the identity of the drivers parents is so important! They MUST be held responsible for their bad parenting!
Long Live the Queen!
Charles stole the throne.
The second it becomes a "thing" that police won't pursue you if go the wrong way on a road, every criminal in the country is going to use this trick and see if they can get away with it. No different than kids these days knowing that retail stores prohibit their employee to intervene thieves or robbers, even if they get caught, they know they won't be charged as an adult in our system, the worst would be for them to go to Juvie for a few years and get out with no criminal record, that's why they keep doing what they do. Our county has become so soft and weak these days it's not even funny.
Not only that, but I'm sure if successfully sued, it would be a pretty bad precedent for police. They may not even want to pursuit anyone out of fear of criminal prosecution for the perpetrators actions. I mean, what if it was someone drunk driving on the wrong side of the road? Does that not warrant the continuation of pursuit, as it's a greater risk to public safety as par 5 (c), or would they now be expected to not intervene in these situations? If they refuse to intervene, would they again be held accountable for doing nothing for public safety? Man, oh man.... it's going to be a nightmare.
Only the stupid ones, they should never had pursued the perp, too much risk to the public.
@@awilliams4957 What if the perp was drunk and driving on the wrong side of the road? Is it better to just let the drunk driver go, despite it being a massive risk to the public as well to not apprehend?
Wise up

- HOW WAS THE CHEMICAL PLANT ALLOWED TO BE BUILT BESIDE THE AAMJIWNAANG RESERVATION ????? This is a case of prejudice against First Nation People.
Stupid!!! Police officer they should all be charged and held accountable every single officer hate police officer man swear they are above the law.
Pursuit must be relegated to the performing arts. A car's computer should have a wireless feature similar in concept to WIFI so that police can pick out the suspect vehicle on screen and bring it to a controlled stop. You are not paranoid. Big brother _is_ watching you.
Hope the cop sees jail..
Coverup coming. YAWN
Am I supposed to feel pity because the dead muslim kid is from Syria? Is that what you want me to feel?
What happened to the Jews in Saskatchewan?

Durham police force do what they want always have.
I'm sorry but the police are getting out of hand! If the police didn't follow the vehicle I doubt any death would have happened.. they put others in danger and need to rethink how they approach these situations. it's common sense! Innocent people lost their lives including a child because of this 😢
Hard to say. Once the suspect vehicle made decision to entered the highway the wrong way the tragedy was a foregone conclusion. Even if the police had followed orders and call off pursuit - no guarantee the collision would have been averted
Durham has a reputation of being lawless
@@grahamholmes9737yes and no... Regardless.. if the cops didn't follow him then the outlook would have been different. If they didn't follow him I don't feel that he would have gone on to the highway in the wrong direction. He would have probably taken a different route but because he had so many police officers on his tail he was triggered which caused him to go on the highway in the opposite direction. The police should have never followed him.. it's common sense! I'm not sorry to say this but the police need to be held accountable for their actions.
@@sean367yeah well that needs to change. Everywhere not just Durham
Umm. Support for Gaza isn't part of "divergent views." It's a principled call for justice for oppressed peoples. It should be the *dominant* view at universities, and indeed it will be, since they are only committed to facts, history, and truth. You should try that, Global.
The problem here is that the people of Gaza were oppressed NOT by Israel but by Hamas. Jews unilaterally left the area twenty years ago, only to be bombarded by rockets from Gaza ever since, starting soon after their withdrawal, hence the blockade. And then came the true genocide of October 7. You are absolutely right, it is not enough to automatically swallow a one sided narrative, it is our duty as civilized humans to explore all sides, no matter how "divergent" they seem to be.
Many of these students have grandparents that eat cat food at the end of the month just to get by...That's what they SHOULD be protesting....The Middle East is not a Canadian problem, but millions of seniors in this country dont have enough to eat, and cant afford to move anywhere......now thats a hell of a lot bigger problem for millions of Canadians, than a 2000yr old conflict we can't do anything about......A country is judged by how it cares for its most vulnerable, not how it virtue signals to other countries.....My God, these students are brainless....They're just chanting at the next shiny object the legacy media and campus faculty tells them to.....And it's pretty damn obvious......Has been for quite some time.......( Seems like the lights are on, but theres definitely nobody home......)
@@twylie2590 Well, technically they nakba'd the area in the 40's and 50's though too. If they didn't do that, maybe there wouldn't be a hamas conflict today? Food for thought.
@@Edward_Bernays You mean when Israel had enemies on all sides who supported the Nazis in World War 2? Israel fought, and won.
@@herculeholmes504 Israel as you know it today wasn't established until 1948. How could they fight everyone on all sides in WW2 (1930's) if the state didn't even exist yet? I mean, unless they are time travellers or something, I don't think that is possible.
how many agitators are there why are some students on the muslim payroll... lazy joursalism no details... lousy work
