Im from Indonesia.

Absolutely, I have a degree that i don't feel i learned anything from, deflated and just lost but this video is unbelievable!! cannot recommend enough!! thank you!!
If you wanna take things to another level then I suggest to get “Animators Survival Kit” which is under 100$ but if you’re cheap then just stick with this video Edit: ok guys, when I said he was “cheap” I didn’t mean to insult the poor dude please don’t take it the wrong way

He could’ve made a movie. Instead, he helped us learn how to make a movie. This dude is a genius.

I've wasted over $50k going to college just to learn these things over the span of months while Alan does it in a single video. Alan isn't managing a class ofc, but still...this video is superior. It covers all 12 principles of animation AND has extra stuff which really helps and already makes it less intimidating, and it's in video form and I can replay it all I want. It's been almost a decade, but damn did the spark come back. Thank you so much for these videos, Alan!!
I made the mistake of going to school for animation. They started me off in basic classes (figure drawing) so it was awhile before I finally got my first animation class that wasn't about design or storytelling (so no actual animating or sometimes even drawing taking place) What did this class involve? WATCHING. KZhead VIDEOS. Also some videos from Richard Williams' series that you can find online easily enough if you know where to look but I think the school did pay for them. Teacher also barely helped us on assignments, was unapproachable and spent most of class working on his own animations, and seemed irritated if you needed help. A couple of us complained about it at the end of the year and felt unprepared for the next class. I ended up quitting the school because it was being turned into a diploma mill school (RIP RMCAD's credibility)
which software to use to make these type of coffee background animation videos?
Indeed the speed of learning from KZhead videos will never be comparable to the speed of learning in classic education it does not matter if its college or university.... The only issue with youtube videos is that is hard to see the bigger picture on how things work in the real world industry. There's a lot of gaps and misinformation....
the forbidden money amount
The rebellion of teaching people things for free is the greatest, most heroic, mostly godly and noble thing you could possibly do. We have deprived ourselves of knowledge so much today in favor of profit and it is heartbreaking, disheartening, and infuriating. Thank you for this gift.
you are absolutely correct.
Well said ❤

I'm surprised at how actually detailed this tutorial is. I'm not even kidding when I say that I've NEVER seen a tutorial this detailed and explained so simply. Even a beginner would understand this. Love the examples too! They make it so much easier to understand. Most tutorials leave me confused, but this made everything clear to me.
I would hope a beginner understands it, it's who it's aimed at. People with experience already know these like the back of their hand.
@@highdefinition450 Yeah, I don't think someone experienced would in that case watch this, unless they'd want to learn new techniques/whatnot. You can never know enough and it's always great to keep learning more.
You'd be more surprised if you tried to write everything that's said here. There's a poem in These 24 minutes
You’d be even more surprised that me and my brother who are beginners have actually learned from this.
@@yesno1067 That's what I was saying, experienced people probably aren't watching this. It's obviously FOR beginners, so it's to be expected that they can understand it. It'd be a pretty bad tutorial if its target audience couldn't understand it haha
For some reason, this video feels like a safe corner on KZhead. I’m not even an animator but I find watching this comforting and enjoyable
I feel like I would watch any educational video on KZhead instead of going to school, mostly bc I actually learn something useful, but also there’s so much passion and entertaining content here that helps with demonstration bc this guy is a talented animator so he’s not just pretending to know this stuff
Only difference: in school you normally apply the principles after learning them. And you get hold accountable to finishing these projects
It's because you're not curious learning in school which is why you find it boring, you watch educational vids on KZhead because you searched for it, you searched it because you're curious. Don't get me wrong, I feel the same way too.

I'm an aspiring animator working on my most beloved project entitled 'Mrs. Devious'. Although it's humor is meant to be thought provoking and mature, I also want for there to also be moments of physical comedy. For this, it is imperative that I learn these principles. Watching this video intimidated me, seeing as how many aspects go into animation, but it also gave me a new perspective that I'd not seen taking animation classes in school. As a seasoned "straight ahead animator" who has done it this way for over 20 years, this Pose to Pose lesson was quite a revelation. I will need to look into this more (still unsure how exactly to do it), for eg in an app such as Clip Studio, that means that you need to make a key pose every 5 or 10 frames, then insert extremes in between them. Which means you need to set the onion skin to "seeing previously 5-10 frames." This is quite interesting, I will definitely try it. I never went to Animation school, but look at how you can learn such a revelation on a video such as this. This video is excellent.
im new to animation, and i'm just adding more frames into it as i go (not adding more frames between untill i need frames between) i use flipaclip btw
I’ve been watching this video for years and I still think it’s the most beautiful thing on this website. It genuinely is the most pure, helpful, heart cleansing, genius video ever made. I know this comment might seem like a lot, especially for a video about the principals about the animation, but this video means so much to me and it would break my heart if it disappeared. Thank you Alan Becker, to creating an honestly nostalgic and meaningful video for me and the rest of us
I recommend taking a simple animation you've already done and applying every principle as you go, this will help understand the concept and memorize it better.
My friend I liked so much your tip... This is really interesting to do.
wow, many thanks!
thank you very much!!
Better yet, make a new one and try to apply them this time around. Going back to modify something you've already finished slows down your growth, artists need to always move forward and learn from their mistakes instead of dwelling on them.

More like hands drawn.
I don't animate, but I study nature science. Most of the principles came from basics physics, such as the squash and stretch (elasticity and/or special relativity), the follow through and overlapping (inertia), the timing (graphical physics) or the slow in and slow out (acceleration). The staging, the secondary action, the appeal and the exaggeration are from psychology. The arcs and the solid drawing are physical biology and foreshortening in real life. And all of them are combine with years of animating experience. That is why those principles are still followed through until this day.
Art originated from man observing the world around him and representing it through icons. Therefore, it makes perfect sense why the principles of animation would reflect real life.

It definitely depends on the style you're going for. Anime like you're talking about is generally more gritty/realistic than whimsical, so there are levels of exaggeration that probably aren't going to be hit in anime style animation. However,it's still hugely important to make 100% clear the action happening on-screen. Goku might not blob outward when he lands, but the force of the impact still needs to squash him down through how his knees bend and his chest follows through. The wind-ups for his punches might not be incredibly large, but perhaps they're emphasized with slow-mo or wind effects on the sides of the screen.
I'm pretty sure goku isn't a water balloon
No he deff wind or pull back when punching actually they have a whole scene for that lol but ur also right more like i think its called rubber hose animation which is what disney old cartoons used
Kill la kill, panty and stocking have squishy animation
@@Over_easy_eggs actually goku does squash watch again
Thanks Alan‼️❤ Fantastic Tutorial! You bring a deluge of knowledge to this 1 video: Amazing! You are incredibly generous with the tutorial’s production value as well.
Honestly once explained it's fairly intuitive. Thank you for breaking it down so nicely for us newbies! Can't wait to play with the full version
This is one of the best animation tutorials I have ever seen, everything is explained very well with great examples to understand why those principles are so important.
Can u suggest best mobile app to make animations on iphone thanks I am at the beginner level
@@xiaoyu3382 Sorry I don't use Iphone, but I heard flipaclip (or something like that) should be good
This is perhaps the best video I have ever watched on youtube. No exaggeration.
no exaggeration, but distorted

@Hidetaka Myazaki I'm sorry, everyone has a different opinion and you have no rights to judge him. If u feel u need to, keep it home. no need to to post it. Someone must have a favourite and how would you feel like if someone said that to you. So shut up weeb. your hentai taste is shittier. Please shut the fuck up if you have nothing nice to say

Im a second year at animation college and this video helped me and many, many others get into our program Also, i show it to everyone who asks me about how animation works
To the KZheadr versus this video thank you I say that from the deepest part of my own heart because I'm trying to start my own animation and I have no clue where to start my scripts are all over the place and let's just be honest I'm not exactly great at animating because I've never done it before you're right down to the line you're explaining how these animations work and how a simple person like me can apply these techniques and become a better animator and that is why I thank you
Posted sorry I have a cold so this voice microphone thing is you know picking up words weird yeah I got admit I'm kind of sitting here texting this as a comment to my original statement instead of just it makes more sense
Whilst I'm not doing much animation I must admit, this is probably one of the best videos I've ever seen. Immensely packed with information, but never overloads the viewer, easy to follow, and great content. Just... wow.
I feel like I just stolen a masterclass that should be paid! This was phenomenal! Congratulations! Now...how will I apply what I learned to my engineer career...oopsie...
Haha same, currently at the office. Not sure if this video will help me get my hydrodynamic simulation working 🤣
@@huzrokhayzur2197 hey just curious, whats your job? and what software do you guys use for those simulations?
I literally realized this was an alan becker video at the very end. Dude, your videos are amazing and now I know why! This is definitely going to help improve my animations, thanks for making this video (yes, I know this is old lol).
This is actually helpful. Most tutorials don't give a lot of examples, or only give examples with balls, and then animators don't know how to use the principles in action. You did well.
Very nice tutorial.
who r u
lol
Yup
Hello *checkmark*
I've noticed that there are cases in animation where you'd want to deliberately ignore some of these. For example... Say you want more of a comedic effect from your punch, but still want it to be powerful; can skip the anticipation step to really emphasize the "BEGONE!!!" factor of it.
Like that one Hulk scene
But, just like with anatomy, you have to first know the rules before you break them
Ta
And mix it with exxageration to make it look almost terrifyingly fast!
My digital art teacher showed this in class and I was like “Omg Alan Becker, the stick figure guy” And I did learn from this, thank you
Alan Becker -thanks for watching. Me- thanks for making 😊
"Let's make him more like an egg" is now my go-to if and when someone asks for drawing help.
I feel bad for self-taught animators right now. This man is a genius. Edit: im self-taught too and i was really bad without this video
I’m a self taught animator, and I use a lot of this.
@@TheBrickGuys I think they met an animator in the past who had no access to information like this and had to use constant trial and error
why?
im also self taught and just realized there are tutorials and help video for things like this. I literally learned so much from this.
I’m self taught, and I get better as I teach myself. And I use and or learn things from tutorials and other vids just like this, but I get most of my skills from stuff in this video
This is fantastic, thank you for sharing. It also highlights that some principles actually covers a multitude of observations and skills under one header. ie There may well have been ‘24 principles‘ before 12 of them were consolidated into ‘staging.’ ;)
TNice tutorials was a fantastic beginner's guide, straight to the point, very clear. As a long-ti teacher I can tell you are quite apt at teacNice tutorialng!
"How to draw anime?" "Learn all these principles, master them, and then always do the exact opposite."
Most TV anime is barely animated, so a lot of this doesn't apply.
@@arolemaprarath6615 you forgot Attack On Titan. also VInland Saga which is from the same studio .
:) !!! That's kinda disturbing !!! I still like this one
@@bananahat1814 How tf most anime is barely animated? Even mediocre works got to have at least thousands of drawings.

I agree

yep
That's free from KZhead
Screepoof Same here buddy!
I watched this (unbeknownst to me) on my Digital Animations class. Coming here and watching this fully after five years of ignorance is... I don't have words.
Wow!! 24 minutes that covered all year of the Animation course in University...and the way you explained it makes even Doctor wants to change a profession to animator.
Wait wtf seriously? With the way your putting this, sounds like animation class/school almost sounds like a scam? Just curious tho
I can't believe how well made this is. The examples are just so well-chosen, you can almost tell he is speaking from his own experience!
TNice tutorials is aweso! I was feeling kinda overwheld when i first start soft but after watcNice tutorialng your tutorial video, i feel much more confident
Sometimes we forget how good Alan is at animating, cause we only see him doing stick figures
me: *takes art class for 2 years* also me: *watches a 24 minute video from an animation professional* i can proudly say the 24 minute video taught me more about art and animation that the 2 years of education.
True Tears in my eyes;-;
Well there's the peer-to-peer feedback, constructive critiques, networking, you get a understanding of working under stress and deadlines, and you get to talk to the art professor personally.
More precisely 24 min. = 24 months 😎😎
thats why i have no faith in school very boring
Same im like wth
I love this series! I always direct beginning animators to this super helpful playlist. Glad to see you put it all in one video to reference! :)
didn't see you here, your tutorials help me alot
Jesse J. Jones arent you the one that makes tutorials?
I love it too but it sometimes gets to overwhelming for me to remember all of this XD Any tips on that

This is absolutely brilliant! It's really helped me to see why some of my animations can look bland or unrealistic. Thank you!
Well done. You covered it all. I've found that you achieve the illusion of WEIGHT by having your fast action on one's and slow action on two's. Scenes done exclusively on one's tend to have this floating quality, and scenes done exclusively on two's are too choppy. It's better to vary it and use both in the scene. ACTING in animation is its own category...
