    • I agree, and there is a good reason actually. When done correctly, kargyraa vibrates the vagus nerve, which affects your autonomic nervous system. Toning the vagus nerve benefits things like digestion and the immune system. It also helps to quell anxiety and the like. Studies have shown that many of the health benefits of yoga come from the fact that it helps tone the vagus nerve. In that respect, Tuvan throat singing is much like "vocal yoga"

  • Fine, thanks for this demonstration. Just a note about the anatomy of kargyraa. The structure set in motion (usually at half the frequency of the vocal folds, leading to the one octave drop) is - like you say - the false vocal folds, also called the ventricular folds. But these are located above the true vocal folds, and not below them. The outpouching called the ventricle intervenes between the two. What makes it feel like the effect is occurring below the true vocal folds is that the large amplitude of the ventricular fold vibration sets a large portion of the throat vibrating along with them, inluding tissue below the true folds. For more details, see my paper from 2001: P.-A. Lindestad, M. Sodersten, B. Merker, S. Granqvist (2001). Voice source characteristics in Mongolian ”Throat Singing” studied with high speed imaging technique, acoustic spectra and inverse filtering. Journal of Voice, 15: 78-85. It is based on high-speed imaging of my laryngeal area (2000 images per second) through fiber optics inserted into my throat via my nasal passages while I am singing Kargyraa style. I am glad I only had to do it once!

  • I saw that a frw people already commented on the fact that the false vocal cords are below the regular vocal cords. I just wanted to add that the lower pitch is due to the fact that the false vocal folds are bigger (more mass) and hence vibrate slower than the vocal folds during phonation, causing alower pitch :)

  • Just as a general advisory here, after looking over the comments; If it hurts, you are doing it wrong. I am not perfect at this either, but I do know that much, and I got that tip from an actual Tuvan. If it hurts, most likely you are stressing an area too high in the throat. The feeling is actually lower than where most people start, and it can be difficult to learn that kind of subtle muscle control. I am a certified yoga instructor, so I am very used to paying attention to subtle feelings in the body and isolating very specific musculature. It is easy to get a "growl" from squeezing the top part of your throat hard and vocalizing, but it is like choking yourself from the inside, and it hurts like coughing up razor blades. The feeling you are looking for should be closer to your chest than your chin. I started feeling it right in the suprastrenal notch (where your collar bones meet your breast bone). Also, playing didgeridoo will really help you with building lung capacity and breath control. I actually started doing khoomei (mid-range throat singing) accidentally, before I even knew what it was, by practicing didgeridoo vocalizations without my instrument.

    • Are you active here still? I'm struggling so much with this, I've been dreaming for years about learning proper kargyraa, but it just never stops hurting. I can get the powerful low sound going but in my throat something is burning. After a minute of trying, my throat is swollen and my chest voice deepens... useful for choir sometimes but hardly ideal. I can do strohbass, but it's just not the same. Unreliable too. :(

      @joelwallenius2877@joelwallenius28776 жыл бұрын
    • I am fairly active. You can go to my page, I have a whole bunch of throat singing videos I did, not all great, but you can see my learning process. I'd be happy to give any advice I can, but I'd probably do better with a sample of your voice. Have you uploaded any of your own attempts at kargyraa? I've been developing my sygyt a lot and noticed it is even harder for me to get kargyraa now than it was before. I can get it back, but it takes a while. I'm still good at Oidupaa style, oddly enough, I guess because of the higher fundamental... anyway, hop over to my page and check out the play list. I tried to do more tutorial type stuff, so maybe you can find something useful there. If you have any samples of your own work, shoot me a link or something. Thanks for the reply.

    • It's past midnight here so I don't dare record right now. I'll make a note of it for tomorrow though. I do have old recordings of kargyraa attempts, but I doubt their ability to represent my current technique. I'll have a look at your videos in the meantime. Thank you so much!

      @joelwallenius2877@joelwallenius28776 жыл бұрын
    • I should be in bed now but I had to reply first. The kargyraa that you sing is not kargyraa, I think you'd want to know that as soon as possible. You're not engaging the false vocal folds. The typical starting point when learning kargyraa (or strohbass, actually) is about one fifth above your lowest full chest voice note - whereas you advocate starting as low as you can go!

      @joelwallenius2877@joelwallenius28776 жыл бұрын
    • Joel Wallenius wow, thanks for the notes, really. I accept your criticism, and it makes a lot of sense. A lot of people would be upset, but I really appreciate it. I'm going to try putting your advice into practice and hopefully improve my kargyraa!

      @HenglishShogun@HenglishShogun4 жыл бұрын
    • @@HenglishShogun , I'm still trying to learn deathcore vocals and this technique (and monk chants) is how I found it. It is actually the same thing as a low, but with a few changes in the throat, mouth, lips, and tongue. If you want low gutteral sound, you really have to relax (biggest tip), open up your throat (super relaxed), and you should feel it vibrate down in your chest. One thing that helps is instead of an "oh" or "yo" sound, try "ooh" or try to slide it into an "ooh" sound using the following changes. Bring your jaw down low (maybe even a touch forward) and pretend like you have a ball in your mouth. Your lips should have a small hole and they are making a "duck face" where they stick out. Hopefully you can make this sound just by thinking of the syllable "ooh" and relaxing and opening up. After you have this, if you want more of a toilet bowl sound (what I think you are wanting?), simply bring the tip of your tongue up and touch either the back of your teeth or right where they meet your gums. It can be hard at first to change your tongue without changing anything else, and to find that sound on its own, so start with your normal low, think "ooh" while relaxing everything while you make the space in your mouth larger and move into duck face... then try to keep all of that while bringing the tongue up. If you don't want toilet bowl, keep your tongue down flat and it is just a matter of relaxing enough (oddly enough meditation and monk chants help for relaxing and breath control needed to project). One thing to keep in mind, you will be using a touch of fry most likely (most techniques use a bit of false chord and fry, just in varying degrees), and it is a great way to change the sound further, so you want the soft palette to resonate (the area I have to focus on to keep good tone) and I think of the sound moving from the back of my throat, all the way up and over and coming out at the top of my nose. I find it strange I focus on the soft palette resonating, but it can add a lot to the sound when getting super low, AND if you really put that soft palette resonation as far backwards as you can while using your nasal passages as well (crinkle up your nose to find it) you can get more of a "roar" like this (notice his nose crinkle up). kzhead.info/sun/iLGTYdipppx5ZYk/bejne.html I'm still at the point where I have to use different approaches to find the sounds, blend them together, and then relax it until it gets super low. I threw a lot at you, so if it doesn't make sense or you are struggling with any of that let me know and I'll do my best to explain. I think what AngelicBaby means when she said "Mine sounds way more distorted though" is due to the addition of fry resonating on the soft palette... playing with that can get a much harsher (and brutal) sound without having to push anything or use more air!! Relaxed with the least amount of effort relying on making things resonate is what you want to shoot for. The most fun part is when you understand that ALL of the different points that resonate (going back to monk chants "oh" "ah" "hue" and "eung") can be MIXED AND MATCHED! Combined with different placements of mouth, tongue, and lips that is a ton of sounds. Oh and "eung" chant in metal either feels like a forward placed "ee" or "en"... that last one is nasal cavities and you can find them just by humming. It was the hardest for me to find since I'm having trouble with highs (moar nasal needed in mix). I hope the ramblings of an insane man are of some help to you!

  • I think smoking might make it significantly more difficult to isolate the lower folds. I thought I had it for a while today, but then kept doing the *ahem* and heard the deeper resonant. Every time I tried to isolate it I would get close and start coughing. I'm almost entirely on an electric cigarette, for about three months now, and now after about 20 mins of coughing up mucus when I get close to the sound I am able to hit and sustain it. I have a suspicion that the vocal folds needed for this are also susceptible to becoming coated with nasties from cigarettes and 'filling up' with mucus. If you are having trouble with this, that might be why...

  • I've been working on this, and once I could get to do it without forcing it or constricting my throat and just relaxed I realized that the pitch I was creating was several notes deeper than the original tones I was making.

  • For me, it doesn't drop like an octave. I can sing a solid C2-Bb1 but with this technique, i just get around a G1-F1.

  • @Zenweaponry just takes time for everything to settle down - the vocal chords must back off right away so the sound production / vibration can occur lower down then work on sustain and diaphragmatic pressure to hold steady sound

  • that you so much for the tip. was having a hard time getting to the bottom of my vocal cords i know what you mean by feeling it move down your chest. your way of keeping your mouth closed and "clearing" your throat and holding it i had it down quickly. but so hold that my throat gets irritated. but practicing will solve this thanks again!

  • Hey, great video! As of now, it's my third day of intensively trying to learn khargyraa. What I've achieved so far is, that I'm pretty close to that motorcycle sound, but I'm not able to hold it at all, especially not with such richness as you can do it. I'm experiencing no scratchiness nor do I have to cough but I feel a little soreness after trying which fades after like 30 minutes or so. I've read this happens because my throat is not used to what it's doing, so I think I'm on the right way and not doing it "too" wrong. I'd really love to take your course on udemy, as I'm not only interested in Khargyraa but in any other Khöömei technique as well, but it's just straightforward too expensive for me at the moment. I will definitely book it later this year, but would sincerely appreciate your advice for now. I think my breathing and air pressuring is not right, so what do you think should I aim for?

  • Hi, my understanding, based upon medical books and videos is that there are folds in the throat below the vocal folds also. J
