Israeli police arrested seven rabbis and Israeli activists Friday at the Gaza border during an action that accused Israel of using starvation as a weapon of war against Palestinians. The delegation of Rabbis for Ceasefire carried bags of food to the Erez crossing between Israel and northern Gaza amid reports that famine is imminent for more than 1 million Palestinians in Gaza. “It is incredibly important that those of us who have privilege use that privilege to call attention to this ongoing catastrophe,” says Ayelet Waldman, one of the seven people arrested Friday. Waldman emphasizes that her “mildly uncomfortable” arrest pales in comparison to the violence and repression encountered daily by Palestinian detainees. “Right now what matters is stopping the starvation and murder of millions of people in Gaza,” she says. The action was planned to mark the tradition of Passover, which celebrates the Jewish exodus from slavery in biblical Egypt. “What does it mean to sit around a table and celebrate freedom when in our names a forced starvation and a mass murder is taking place?” asks our other guest, Rabbi Alissa Wise, a founder and organizer with Rabbis for Ceasefire and the former co-executive director of Jewish Voice for Peace.

According to Al Jezeera, the goods that are banned are those that could be repurposed for military use, such as concrete, agricultural fertilizer, certain chemicals, and other miscellaneous items such as underwater cameras. Israel would not be banning any goods if Gaza hadn't started smuggling weapons and firing rockets at Israeli cities in 2007. How is this apartheid? As for controlling who can leave and return, Israel has the right to decide who can enter its territory, just like any other country. Before Oct. 7th Gazans in fact entered Israeli daily for work and medical care. Is that apartheid? Egypt has a steel border wall with Gaza. Is Egypt apartheid? Regarding the Great March of Return, here is what it says on UNRWA's website: The so-called Great March of Return demonstrations (GMR) began on 30 March 2018 to demand the end of the Israeli blockade and the right of return for refugees. While protests have continued to be largely non-violent and the vast majority of those in attendance are unarmed, there are often reported incidents of stone throwing, as well as tire burning, attempts to damage the fence and, since April, some demonstrators flew kites or balloons towards Israel that carried burning rags and damaged Israeli property, including agricultural land. Israeli Security Forces (ISF) have responded to these civilian demonstrations with the use of tear gas, rubber-coated bullets and live ammunition." Further according to UNRWA "More than 200 Palestinians were killed in the riots and thousands were injured. In addition, Palestinians regularly flew helium balloons into Israel carrying explosives and incendiary devices, sparking fires that destroyed large swaths of foliage." So even UNRWA admits that the marchers were not always peaceful. Israel has the right to protect its border, like any other country. How is this the same thing as apartheid?

It was a publicity stunt. Thousands of tons of food are trucked in daily, so a few more bags of food mean nothing. They carried their little bags of food to a place they knew they weren’t allowed, so that they could get arrested and get interviews on channels like this one.
