With proper concentration, one of the best all round defenders. Unfortunately, the media and the refs always treated him unfairly. If he was really that bad as the media made him out to be, Chelsea wouldn't have signed him TWICE!

Idk why people blame him for the 7-1 loss. If anything he was the only one that really tried for the team. Looking back at it he was frustrated and couldn’t believe the result. This guy is one of the best players and an absolute legend. Not the best at defense at times but we can’t deny the talent this man has. He’s a champions league winner for a reason !!

Nobody give him credit for what he have done for Chelsea still remember him winning the Champions league for Chelsea against 1 of the best Bayern Munich sides . And to name a couple more 2x Premier leagues and Europa League he was one of the underrated defenders in his time

This is the kind of video very underrated on youtube. Thanks a lot for this. I wish I could see more a of this kind. Boateng, Hummels, Bonucci ...for the older F.De Boer ... even older R.Koeman .... Centre-back bringing back ball out of defense could be interesting also like Rudiger, Alaba, Lucio ... and a lot I forget.

It's the defending part which let him down. He was doing very well during his first stint at chelsea. He still retained his ball playing ability but he's not really consistent enough for a defender. He steps up when the team needs him tho.

Actually he is not pure CB His original position was DMF in Benfica If he keep playing in DMF position he is much better than Casimiro, Kante, Makelele, Guttuso, Roy Kean, Kimmich, Varetti and etc.. mangers changed him to play CB
