    • Fort Knox, 1992. The trade was made with Aberdeen and the Tiger II they had was swapped for a prototype M1. I was lucky enough as a 19K just back from Korea to be there when it was dropped off and even luckier to be part of the task force that towed it to the tank works for the rework. Got to meet some of the old German mechanic's from WW 2 that were brought over and saw much of the work done including lifting the turret. All I know is the M88 we towed it with was strained to the max and jesus did we rip up some roads moving it. Spent years in an M1A1 and A2 but sitting in that Tiger you just felt imposing. The same with the Panther. Shermans you felt like you were sitting in a thin skinned pretzel tin. I refused to get in any t-55's or T-64's after doing what we did to them.

    • Although an impressive tank it was nonetheless another stupid idea to be expected from having a benighted sophomaniac in charge. They couldn't build enough of these under powered and slow gas hogs to make even a marginal difference in the direction of the war. Too heavy to cross most of the bridges they also struggled in deep mud. Profoundly unreliable they broke down often. Repairs were incredibly difficult and time consuming especially in the field. Between breaking down and running out of fuel many were simply abandoned by their crews. These tanks proved to be another major drain on already stretched resources, just like the much hyped ME-262. For the time and resources needed to build one of these King Tiger tanks they could have built 2 or even 3 of their incredibly capable Panzer V tanks. One has to wonder what effect having another 2000 Panzers would have had.

  • Apart from the gun and the armor, Tiger II was actually not very good. It had the same engine as was installed in the Panther. This made the tank very slow and sluggish. It also had a very poor suspension system that was not very reliable due to the tank weight. Finally, the tank could not be built in sufficient numbers and some of the materials used to build the tank had run out so substitute materials were used which made some of the armor unreliable etc. It would probably had been a better idea using the resources on developing and building more of the Panther tank.

    • True, but it's fun to play the 'what if' game with this tank. If Germany could have brought the King Tiger into service in 1940 instead of 1944, along with the expected improvements in reliability with combat service, this beast would have been even more fearsome by 1944.

      @nuancolar7304@nuancolar73042 жыл бұрын
    • The Tiger II was a mechanical nightmare. Very difficult to service in the field. Interleaved wheels were a disaster in mud and snow. Rats ate the covering of the wires internally in the winter. Ate too much gas. Also the Firefly and the Pershing guns could penetrate the frontal armour.

      @michaeltroster9059@michaeltroster90592 жыл бұрын
    • I think you have to rephrase that, the Tiger 2 tank in fact WAS very good. But, it's drawback was the fact, as with all the tigers, that the engine was too unreliable. Germany had to invent newer engines but simply didnt have time and/or recources for it, and the thing about the armor being replaced by alternate materials is very true, but thats not really the fault of the tank design, more or less its just the problem that germany had throughout the entire war in general, and thats the lack of raw materials and things like petrol. I would call the tiger 2 an amazingly designed tank that simply wasnt completed yet. With that I mean that it didnt have the needed parts yet. In short, if Germany had the recources to complete this tank, provide it with a stronger engine, didnt have to use alternate unreliable material for the armor, this tank would be completed and an absolute unstoppable tank on the battlefield.

    • @@cyber3408 Valid points. We must remember that the Tiger was brought from the drawing board to combat during a war, when everything is on the fast track. Given the luxury of time during peacetime, Germany probably could have perfected the Tiger and fixed its various "issues" quite well before making it battle ready. Unfortunately for Germany, time was not on their side so they had to rush the new tanks into combat.

  • The King Tiger looked 20-30 years ahead of its time when it took to the battlefield. Even if the German army didn't build Tigers and Tiger IIs, and just built Panzer IVs and maybe Panthers, they still would have lost, but it might have just taken longer. If Germany kept bombing British airfields, they could have brought Britain to its knees and possibly have shut America out of the war. They came very close to doing so until they switched to bombing British cities and allowed the RAF to recover.

    @forexdragon@forexdragon2 жыл бұрын
    • Yes, its right. And they should equip the Bf 109 with extra fuel from the beginning. With empty tanks, it was difficult for them to protect their bombers. Bombing cities only strengthens the resistance of the population. The Waffen-SS only really got in popularity when the cities were bombed.

      @PropperNaughtyGeezer@PropperNaughtyGeezer2 жыл бұрын
    • Yeah maybe but in 1940 airfields just consisted of some long green grass patches and a few buildings. Not sure if it would made all that difference as airfields could really be easily shifted from one place to another.

      @petetravels4534@petetravels45342 жыл бұрын
    • @@petetravels4534 Airfields require paved runways, not grassy fields and the Germans were destroying both the infrastructure and fighter planes. Grassy fields might work in an emergency, but not for hundreds of planes running several sorties a day - you will inevitably experience a lot of crashes when they land as the grassy fields would get bogged down by often soggy British weather. The planes could literally noise dive when their wheels hit the muddy ground. Cars can barely drive down grassy roads, let alone airplanes which have proportionately smaller tires and are more effected by bumps on the surface. A grassy field is not a reliable surface. It's a well known fact that British fighter command was about a week away from collapse if the bombing kept up. Research it yourself. Also, had the Germans installed drop tanks on their fighters, Britain would have lost for sure as it would have allowed them to escort their bombers for the entire bombing run, instead of only part way as German bombers had inadequate defensive armament. The Germans were also having success when they started destroying radar sites, until they again switched tactics.

      @forexdragon@forexdragon2 жыл бұрын

Half joking lol. But mein Gott, what an incredible machine. I can only imagine how intimidating it must have been to be a crew member inside one of a line of several Shermans advancing across an open field towards the dark silhouette of one lone, enormous beast of a King Tiger standing its ground, watching through a narrow slit as your Sherman rumbles and shakes along and 75mm round after 75mm round ricochet harmlessly off the Tiger’s frontal armor in brief showers of sparks, shrieking and warbling off into the distance. Or the sheer pucker factor of seeing its massive turret rotate slowly towards you, stopping just in time to allow you a moment to stare straight down the gaping maw of such a disproportionately destructive cannon, and realize in that instant that you might as well be sitting inside a giant stick of butter with tissue paper tracks. It’s difficult not to be mesmerized by the spectacle of such a massive, fierce, mechanical monster roaring and clanking ominously along, even despite its flaws and economic impracticalities.
