Ex-Post Office chief denies cover-up over remote access emails

Angela van den Bogerd has told the inquiry into the Post Office Horizon scandal she did not recall receiving emails warning her that software maker Fujitsu would remotely access the accounts of sub-postmaters.
Ms van den Bogerd was the former people services director at the Post Office and handled complaints about the Horizon system.
A fault in the company's software led to dozens of sub-postmasters being wrongfully convicted in connection with missing funds.

    • Genuine apologies would certainly be a good start, but we've not seen them from any of the people who were responsible. All we've seen is blame shifting, whitewashing and word salad. I very much doubt custodial sentences will come out of any of this, there's just far too many people involved and pinning the blame on particular individuals is going to be difficult. I hope we see a lot of civil claims from the victims though. They deserve vindication, closure and handsome compensation.

  • It's a NON apology, as Ms van den Bogerd indicates, she's only sorry for the events that caused this tragedy to the postmasters. It's clear that Ms van den Bogerd is in complete denial in her own mind, to the part she played. She's divorced herself from doing anything wrong while enjoying her role at the PO, as chief operations officer and completely complicit in all aspects of the PO activities. Arrogance & survival mode will do that to people in power, they see themselves as being above reproach. (It wasn't me, it was always someone else's fault)

Selective memory loss will not stop them from being prosecuted when the time comes, hopefully they will get a lot of years inside. They all knew that the system was faulty but did everything they could to cover it up. • If it was Fujitsu that altered accounts has anyone explained why?

    @adrianwright8685@adrianwright868527 күн бұрын
    • The only altering of accounts Fujitsu seems to have done was to insert compensating transactions when there was a known imbalance in an account. So, for example, if Post Office "X" showed an incorrect deficit of £100K, Fujitsu support staff could add £100K to restore the balance. Similarly, if Post Office "Y" showed an incorrect _surplus_ of £50K, Fujitsu support staff could deduct £50K from the account to compensate for the error.

      @ftumschk@ftumschk27 күн бұрын
    • @@ftumschk If true that seems barking mad - why would Fujitsu feel the need to 'adjust' another companies accounts?

      @adrianwright8685@adrianwright868527 күн бұрын
    • @@adrianwright8685 To enable the books to balance when an erroneous transaction was found. It was simply error-correction, and there's nothing mad or out of the ordinary in that. What was wrong was that Fujitsu system administrators could use postmasters' IDs to make these corrections, and that this was done without the postmasters' knowledge. However, there was nothing untoward otherwise and, despite what the more conspiracy-minded among us have suggested, there's zero evidence that rogue Fujitsu employees were siphoning off cash for their own personal gain.

      @ftumschk@ftumschk27 күн бұрын
    • @@ftumschk Maybe in Post Offices where the existing SPM had been removed due to alledged theft etc then replaced with a new SPM, the new SPM's accounts could be remotely altered to remove any sign of imbalances in their accounts.

      @iwalker3809@iwalker380926 күн бұрын
    • @@iwalker3809 These compensating transactions were done more-or-less overnight. Errors happened at random across the post office network, and many of the imbalances were corrected if and when they were detected. There is zero evidence that individual post-offices (or SPMs) were targeted individually, or indeed "targeted" at all, by Fujitsu. And - here's the kicker - there is zero evidence that any money was siphoned off by Fujitsu. Any recovery of "missing" funds was done by the Post Office, and depended on (a) a case being brought to court; (b) a "successful" prosecution at the end of a lengthy legal process; and (c) the SPMs concerned actually stumping up the cash. Fujitsu, for their part, were paid their contractual fee for providing and maintaining IT services, whether those services worked well or not, and totally independently of any prosecutions brought. They didn't get a "cut" of the proceeds.

  • What becomes increasingly clear is all PO senior management are inputting into the inquiry with an eye to future prosecutions of themselves. It's not even subtle and fools nobody. As the ex-post submaster stated at the end, the sudden rise in balancing issue coinciding with Horizon implementation would have raised concerns in any reasonable management system. The PO/Fujitsu went from paper based systems to computers with no backout plan and simply kept digging a massive hole for themselves at the cost of lives. Vennells testimony is going to be interesting. I wonder what her god is thinking?
