Petraeus did not predict the downfall of the US occupation of Iraq, though. John Bolton predicted the downfall of Iran in 2019, 2020 and 2021

This is different. The Taliban is a single terror group that sort of runs a country, Iran's govt is trying hold a diverse nation together and is themselves susceptible to domestic revolts. They're a lot more fragile than the Taliban.

The US has been constantly at war for nearly 100 years but has lost all of them since 1945. Why does Petraeus think this would change?
I'm not advocating for more war, but we certainly didn't lose the Gulf War in the 90's. One could also argue that today's thriving Vietnam would not have happened, had we not interfered. Ditto for South Korea.

Patraeus is the best when it comes to commentary on global conflicts.
World wars do not catch us by surprise. Before WW1 the probability of war - not just the possibility - was widely discussed. Before WW2 rearmament, including in the UK, was running at full pace. WW3 is now, slowly but surely, being contemplated by more and more of the world's influential people. We don't know how the dominoes could fall next - conflict with Iran might be the spark.
WW1 happened as Germany arose as superpower challenging the old powers (UK, US, Russia) people saw war coming from long way and they embraced it with eagerness (not knowning what modern war would look like). I think the situation is bit similar, we see war is coming the different is that the populations DO NOT want it. Lets see how these ev il fkcs like patreus here trick us into war.
I'll go with a lot of that. It's often said that WW2 was caused by the failure of the Treaty of Versailles to provide a solution the German people could live with. I see the point but think it's only part of the story. The main problem is that fascism prospers in difficult times as mass psychology reacts to hardship and political instability. I'd say that the war in Ukraine is a consequence of the Russian failure to move past WW2(Russian sacrifice etc. was a vital part of Soviet propaganda intended to keep the masses quiet) and the subsequent failure of glasnost. Putin was also greatly encouraged by Trump's reckless abandonment of Afghanistan which sent a clear message of non-engagement. I don't see any culpability on the part of American generals. If you want aggressive military types have a conversation with Croatian military officers, as I had on one occasion, and walk away with grey hair. American military commanders are really quite mild.@@harukrentz435

Petraeus predicted an Ukraine victory and wanted to drink beer in Crimea one year ago.
The only reason Ukraine has not won is because Biden and Europe dragged their feet providing weapons to Ukraine badly neededand giving only enough for Ukraine not to lose. Had Ukraine possessed 155mm artillery, Excalibur rounds, Himars, ATACAMS, cruise missiles, tanks and F16s in 2022, the outcome would have been different. The Ukranians certainly have fire in their bellies and are not afraid to fight.

So maybe start arming, supporting and training the dissidents could be another way (its more long term, but also more safe)

yea, but where are the weapons? Ukraine got very little very late of what was promised, and not even that. How can they "roll over the Russians" if they don't have the necessary weapons? They got just enough to keep their head over the water.

I'm going to try to write my best English. Normally I listen to the speeches of the Spanish military and ambassadors and their analysis, and the conclusion they usually reach is that it would be crazy for the USA to attack Iran, they would achieve nothing, except some destruction, it is difficult to carry out an armored battle in a territory like Iran, putting troops on the ground would be harder than Afghanistan (War that in 2021 you have lost in a humiliating way). They only have the option to bomb, knowing that Iran's projectiles are cheaper and have the advantage of terrain. The conclusion is another big mistake by the hawks, which is why I am surprised to hear these programs in English. We will see in a few years which soldiers were right.

Recruitment is low because the main recruitment pool has been told being a man is bad, being British is bad, being a patriot is bad, being white is bad. Drilling that into people for decades and then asking them to die for Lockheed Martin shareholders isn't going to go very well.
