The Truth about Sugar and Cancer

This is a snippet from the latest episode of ‘So Now I’ve Got Breast Cancer’, I talked to Dr Clare Shaw, Consultant Oncology Dietitcian and author to ‘The Royal Marsden Cancer Cookbook’ what we should and shouldn’t be eating after a breast cancer diagnosis.
I asked her all your questions, including
Do we need to detox?
Does sugar feed cancer?
Can you cure cancer with diets and supplements?
What can’t you do during treatment?
This is the topic I get the most questions on, and the one I get abuse and even death threats. There is SO much misinformation out there.
There’s also the weekly poem from the wonderful Donna Ashworth and it’s been incredible hearing how her poems have moved you
YOu can watch the show on YOutube or listen on Apple and Spotify

  • It’s good to reduce sugar for metabolic health reasons. Prevent pre diabetes which is a horrible comorbidity for any serious health condition including cancer.

    • Absolutely correct. Discussions about sugar get confusing if you don't define terms. The sugar in your blood is called glucose. The white stuff you put in your coffee is a combination of two molecules ,-glucose and fructose. Dr. Robert Lustig has excellent videos linking the epidemic of obesity ànd diabetes to consumption ofultrapro essed foods. You should realize that all ultra processed foods have high levels of added sugars and it's a good idea for your health to eliminate minute ultraprocessed food . No one can stop you from eating high levels of junk food but the high levels of added sugars will promote weight gain and diabetes both of which will increase cancer risk. I don't believe in moderation because everyone defines that differently . The AmericanHeart Association recommends an upper limit of 25 grams of sugar per day for women which wld. Be six teaspoons.one poptart per day will put you at your limit .Not worth it neither is drinking alcohol. I recommend the talks of Dr.Robert Lustigamd Dr. Rick Johnson on the dangers of EXCESSIVE added sugars.Dr.Thomas Siegfried on metabolically starving. cancer. Dr.Longo on fasting mimicking diet. Note that there are peo❤please who should not fast including people who are seriously underweight.Do your research, new ideas don't get accepted readily , don't depend on your team to keep you up to date. New practices take years to filter down to the clinic level.

  • Well, thank you! I was just feeling stupid because I replied to a fitness youtuber with MBC, and I wanted so set the record straight, but then I was like, "maybe she knows something I don't?" After 4 years on treatment, my oncologist woulda told me by now...!? Right? Anywhooo... Started Truqap this week, just got approved here in the USA Nov 2023!! Keep up the greatr work informing people. She's saying ketosis weirdness, but she's been also quitting treatment trying to say she has no cancer in her body. That's not possible, is it? Metastatic means no remission, no cure, right?

    • My aunt had stage 4 colon cancer and went into extended remission after a rigorous chemo program. They don't say cured if stage 4 cancer seemingly vanished they say extended remission or ño evidence of disease.

    • Eating process sugar increases your blood sugar level!! That is not contested!! Therefore, you will have a higher level of sugar in your blood than if you did not eat it and that will be bad!! This lady really does talk some crap!!!!

    • Obesity in general is a risk factor. But really, I've been managing my stage 4 breast cancer for 4 years (targeted therapy), and my team woulda told me by now. My nutritionist woulda told me by now; she's my friend, too, not just my nutritionist. Google even debunks what you're saying. If you have high blood sugar, that's unhealthy. Cancer happens. just keep your blood sugar in a healthy level, which is harder to do if you're obese.

    • NO. It’s not that extra sugar makes cancer cells grow faster. That’s false and pseudoscience. Do not listen to homeopaths when treating cancer please. This woman is trying to explain there is a certain level of sugar in any living person, and that level of sugar (even if you’re only eating spinach for every meal) will sustain the cancer cells. There ARE things you can do to keep yourself healthy when you have cancer and you shouldn’t over-indulge in sugar just like everyone else shouldn’t, but avoiding it won’t kill your cancer.

And doctors the cells don’t need a certain amount of sugar that’s a myth - cells are happy running on ketones. • I'm not a doctor, but I'm going to say no. You can however try to prevent cancer by not being obese. That doesn't mean healthy, skinny people doesn't get cancer also, but the risk is reduced.
