Evolution of National Flags Since 2000
It's common for a nation to adopt a new flag from time to time, but exactly how common is this? Here, I explore every single alteration to a national flag in the twenty-first century and discover the rate in which these flags change in the modern day.

To add context to the Comoros flag: The four stripes added represent the islands of the archipelago, just like the four stars. Yellow for Mohéli, white for Mayotte, red for Anjouan and blue for Grande Comore. Mayotte is a French overseas department but are claimed by the Comoros as theirs. The reason why Mayotte remains French is because the island rejected independence twice in 1974 and 1976. And in 2009, the island voted in favor of becoming a department. Mayotte has a stronger link to France than the rest of the Comoros because they were French for far longer, as it became French in 1841, who repopulated it and made the island a sugar island. The others became French in 1886. The design of the flag of Georgia dates back to the 12th century as a coin of the King David the Builder with it was discovered in late 2021. It also appeared as the flag of Tbilisi on a 14th century map by Domenico and Francesco Pizzigano. The Kingdom of Georgia lasted from 1008 to 1490. After the fight for independence from the Soviets, the flag was used in the early 2000s by the main opposition party, the United National Movement led by Mikheil Saakashvili, as a symbol of popular resistance to Shevardnadze's rule (a rule marked by rampant corruption) as well as a symbol of the Rose Revolution. So when Shevardnadze resigned and Saakashvili won in a snap election, he endorsed the flag.
Rare detailed comment. Have my like.
Wait, but Mayotte is part of France.
@@mrm8522 I literally said that it's a French overseas department. It's a part of France claimed by Comoros. Did you skip everything I said about why Mayotte is French? Because I never said it wasn't.

I have an dictionary for kids from 2006 that has a section for flags of the world and most of the flags showed in this video are there, and back in time Libya's flag always stood out to me and my friends, it is so simple, yet so iconic Also in this dictionary the flag of Angola is the 2003 proposal, it looks similar to Costa Rica's flag, but the red stripe is bigger and it has a sun in the middle, i read that they never used this flag, so i don't know why it's there
The reason why green has always been my favourite colour is that, when I was a little kid, there was this list of flags of the world, which I loved, and Libya's green rectangle just stood out so much that it captivated me
I have something similar, but from 2011. It was a pack of flash cards that had flags and stats.
The old Libya flag seems to be homage to plain Red Banner that the Paris Commune and the revolutions in Germany, Russia, etc. used.
I had flag flash cards too!
You defintley need to make more of these. I need more flag content in my life.
Great video! Would you ever make one for 1980-2000?

Turkmenistan is one of my favorite flags because while I typically like a simpler flag, I make an exception for certain flags that look cool because of it being more complex, and Turkmenistan is one of them. There are five stars on the Turkmen flag to represent both the five regions of the country (Ahal, Lebap, Mary, Balkan, and Daşoguz) and the Five Pillars of Islam. A carpet is on the hoist side to signify the historic Turkmen carpet industry. There are five different designs for the five major Turkmen tribes, which from top to bottom are the Teke, Yomut, Saryk, Chowdur, and Ersari. The olive branches at the bottom were added in 1997 to represent peace as Turkmenistan became a neutral country in 1995. And regarding the East Timor/Timor Leste flag, even though the official flag is supposed to have a slanted star, an interesting fact is the flag flown during the independence ceremony in 2002 had a straight star despite the clear specifications and also had an aspect ratio of 1:2. The East Timor flag was designed by Natalino Leitão (who died when Indonesia invaded) was based off the flag of Fretilin which was the dominant party at the time of their original independence in 1975, and it has been assumed that the flag was also inspired by Cuba and Mozambique as Fretilin had sympathies for FRELIMO and their fight for Mozambique independence from Portugal, and Che Guevara.
Nah yeah, too long
I'm Italian, and I completely forgot that, for 3 years, our flag had a different shade of green. To be fair, I was 10 to 13 in those years, so I doubt I would have noticed/cared about it

Technically all the ones that just specify the colours don’t count as changes, because they’re retroactively saying that was always what the flag was supposed to look like.
I'd only include the ones that have distinguishable changes, like Mongolia's.
That was very interesting. Great content.
Let's get this guy to 100k!
Great job on this video! For years, I've always wanted such a video like this, and it's finally here! It'd be really cool and nice if you made a similar video for flag changes but from the 1980s to the 1990s! I know it'd be tough with the dissolution of the USSR, but I still would really want such a video like this!

Heh, at least it’s not like someone knitting sweaters for an Olympics and those sweaters looked like flags and then one of those flags changed 3 days before that Olympics started and they didn’t have time to make another one. Yup, definitely didn’t happen at all.
@@maxandlily6074 …ok which country did this? i heard about the flag that changed due to two countries having the exact same flag but not right before the olympics
@@bostonrailfan2427 that was Haiti and Liechtenstein for 1936, I was talking about when Bosnia changed their flag on February 4th, 1998. 3 days before the 1998 Winter Olympics, and they didn’t have time to make another sweater for the child supposedly wearing Bosnia’s flag. This year the french overseas department of martinique changed its flag
That‘s not 100 % true. The official flag of Martinique is still the flag of France. They just get a new regional flag since 2023, which they are using for sports or cultural events.
The video is about countries, Martinique isn’t one but an overseas department of France. It could introduce a new flag every day but wouldn’t be featured in a video like this

Do evolution of flags since 1980-2000
This is a very good video, can't wait to see more national flag changes from the either the 1900s or just the decades of the 90s specifically the 80s or 90s
Edit: decades of the 1900s
Could you so this for other time period too?
I know why Kosovo wasn't included... it's because it's not fully recognized yet! I happen to live in a country that recognizes Kosovo (hint: first Slavic country), and I understand why people pretend that Kosovo doesn't exist. But for anyone who recognizes Kosovo's independence, Kosovo initially didn't have a flag of its own yet, but they later adopted a variant of the Albanian flag (with the red star to symbolize socialism), and during the 21st century, leading up to their independence, they used the Serbian flag, until their independence on February 17th, 2008, where they adopted a variation of the first proposal from the June 2007 Kosovo flag contest (the contest version has a blue background, a white country border, and 5 golden stars that are not of equal size, whereas the current version of the flag has the colors of the stars and border switched, and the stars themselves are equally-sized, above the border, and an additional star. The stars represent the major ethnic groups in Kosovo: Albanians, Serbs, Bosniaks, Turks, Romani and Gorani.)
As of writing this, I noticed Kyrgyzstan changed it's flag design slightly in December 2023.

Great video! I didn't know about a lot of these! Small correction when it comes to the flag of South Sudan: The flag shown in the video was never the official flag. The star is not tilted and the cerulean blue is actually cyan (think Saint-Lucia). The flag you've shown is an incorrect variation widely believed to be the official flag until this year due to photographs of flags in South Sudan being very ambiguous (if I remember right)! A few months ago, the government made it clear which version of the flag is the correct one. I think that announcement was made early this year, but it might have happened after the video released.
can you make the evolution of national flags since 1900 pls?
Georgia needs an Oscar
