Revealed onstage at GDC 2019 during “State of Unreal,” Chaos is Unreal Engine’s new high-performance physics and destruction system coming in early access to Unreal Engine 4.23. This is the full play through of the real-time tech demo, which is set within the world of Robo Recall. With Chaos, users can achieve cinematic-quality visuals in real time in scenes with massive-scale levels of destruction, with unprecedented artist control over content creation.

3 years later and still not a single game makes use of stuff like that
so, true, we are in discord and renting about game development these days too.... how can it be that there is not one game making real use of the powerful tools unreal engine 5 is giving ?! where are the real next gen games at?!
Most big budget games take 3 to 5 years to develop so it's still a bit too early believe it or not. Next year will likely be the first year that we start seeing true next gen games. It also hasn't been worth it for game studios to focus on next gen exclusives yet as the majority of the install base will likely be on last gen until 2024.
Lazy developers lol
In The Matrix Awakens, you can destory cars. Of course buldings are invincible. It is funny
AAA games have, at minimum, a development cycle of 7 years nowadays. Depressing, but we likely won't see anything big making use of UE5 features until 2030
1:29 Good old indestructible floor.
It’s called bedrock
Dont forget these massive maps are built on a plane, it would take wayy too much time layering that
@@CapperCritic And if they decided to do it, they would have a lot of trouble considering they would have to generate pathways for the AI in realtime and that might lag
@@gigabit6226 But that would be the ultimate game. Still wont be possible for another 5-10 years id say
@@CapperCritic Uh-huh.
Imagine a godzilla game with this kind of physics and graphics
Thats will be the best game ever that ever made
I've been waiting for a new Hulk game to be honest. Been too long.
@dlz124 I'm actually looking up game engines and coding languages to create an open world kaiju game. People will hopefully love it!
Nat Law cool! I awalys been imagining an open world game where you play as a kaiju and run around and cause destruction and fight other monsters
pcs all over the world exploding because of one game, imagine that
This is what I've always dreamed of in gaming.
@bfdi firey teardown wishes. I like the game, but the physics need work. I mean it takes away from the immersion when a building can be held up by a window.
Red Faction Guerilla 2009
Can't wait!
@@crazytastie There are actually i few mods that you can install in the steam workshop that add better physics
@@FredIsDood Good to know. I'll have a look. Thanks for the info.
i want new Matrix game with unreal engine and these physics and destruction , imagine the dark greenish atmosphere with realistic graphic and physics , mind blown puuuuuuukh.
Haha, I also thought of the Matrix when I saw the concrete columns being destroyed :D

It's a bit TOO "high performance", at 0:44 debris is just constantly coming out of the left-most pillar like a popcorn machine.
dafuq dude a very good comparison
Lol 😆
Hey shut up
I mean there's always something to nitpick if you really need to
Its in an early test stage still.
I'm skeptical. We've seen tech demos of procedural destruction as far back as early last gen. The tech isn't new. It's not being used however.
red faction guerilla
@@PunkHippie1971 Yeah that's ONE. And they didn't capitalize on the destruction with the sequel. There's also Battlefield that has been scaling it down since Bad Company 2, and it wasn't as complex as some early demos.
@@C0T0HA Just agreeing that we had this tech last gen. It probably takes a certain amount of extra effort to get it to work on large maps which is why hardly any other games use it.
@@PunkHippie1971 yeah and it creates serious performance spikes so the whole game usually has to be scaled down to allow for relatively smooth destruction. MS had a good idea to make procedural destruction computing server-based but that didn't fall through
I love listening to cybergeeks
Everything is being destroyed while there is no scratch on the floor. I´d need those indestructible tiles :D
True
FOR YOUR KITCHEN BRO?
This is how i remember the first Red Faction.
if you just ramp up smoke particles and rubble you could have even something similar...
Me too. I was even more impressed by the first Red Faction at the time than I am now watching this trailer.
I only briefly got to play the 3rd and my PlayStation died.. I wish it was available for Xbox one
this is a game-changer. What about water physics? Any news on them? Most of the game engines still supports traditional water physics based on the 2D shapes
Nvidia Gameworks but that's still new and limited
In 2009 "red faction guerrilla" the physics where same. Today it's a slightly better graphics. Nothing new.
There was that one video game that had water as a mechanic a few years ago, but aside from that a lot of video games avoids fluid simulations as a game feature, even with Nvidia's shotty implementation.
Skisful What? Compared to this? This is a massive improvement/RFG. You must not be looking at the same video as I am lol
@@Deliveredmean42 I wouldn't call the implementation shotty, in fact, its pretty good compared to most implementations. Getting hair and fluid simulation is a big deal and is hard to optimize for real-time use. Just like Ray-tracing was. Takes time for rendering techniques to hit real-time usage.
OMG! This looks awesomeeee!!!! The gorgeous graphics + the destruction system = Pure Joy! I can't wait! :D
maybe in battlefield 8,9 or 10
This is a showcase of how much more there is to go for game realism. Its com a long way but no where near this. Give it 10 years.
lol this is a system available for use right now, has been since 2019. Developers just dont use systems like these because they add a ton of work.
Yeah what are you talking about? It’s being used on games as we speak
Red Faction Guerrilla did something like this in 2009. Most devs are simply incompetent.
@@KamikazeChinaman One of my favorite games of all time, the physics match this showcase but its impressive.
Robo recall 2? I’m drooling 🤤
How much destruction do you want? Me: yes
Yo guys look it's the 2015 Crackdown 3 reveal
this is insane. Im so excited about the future of gaming.
Not to rain on your parade, but this kind of stuff very likely won't come for a very long time. Consoles will always be the main focus of game devs with the money to do this stuff. Consoles will always have terribly weak CPUs, and that'll be the bottleneck for anything including mechanics like this. Console manufacturers will always focus on graphics, because graphics sell.
@@Capybarrrraaaa But for pc? If some companies see that in close future investing money for create this kind of games can get a lot of console players, why would they not do that? Maybe then console companies start thinking to put more invest in their consoles. Summering, its all about the money they can get from a place, and It can be very good opportunity. Its a very feasible fact. What do u think?
@@nilmoralesespartza1251 I think that the majority of the casual market doesn't know , or care about a lot of this stuff. Just look at how games companies are capable of outright ripping them off with franchises like FIFA being as sucessful, FO76 still exceding expectations. I hope this doesn't come across as elitist, but the majority of the gaming community doesn't seem to actually care about quality and only wants graphics better than the other console.
@@Capybarrrraaaa There is true on what are u saying, but from my point of view, the money, sadly, can get anything. U can create desire inside of ppl by tryharding with very good quality marketing. If its correctly done, u can get It. Maybe its me just being so positive, but i really think its possible.
@@nilmoralesespartza1251 Maybe, it's the type that would only affect a few games though and I don't see console manufactuers paying more and upping the price for their consoles just for the sake of the few. I think the closest we'll get to something like that is Crackdown's cloud-based services

Imagine a proper long-awaited and deserving Hulk game with this, destroying the environment in such a fashion. I'd grab the game in pre-order right away for the physics alone.
Love it! Epic are always the best with their Unreal Engine 👏😎🎉
they are better it
ther fact that this isn't even Unreal Engine 5 truly impresses me.
I find it funny that we get these demonstration videos showing off the physics of the engine. But we are yet to get what we are promised.
RAM.. it takes a lot of it AND processing power. They COULD implement this but it would be a huge performance hit. So you have to choose, 120 fps or free range destruction.. can't have both yet.
This use to be something you wouldn’t even think about doing in a real time engine
I guess you've never played Red Faction then
I really dount this can be used to such extent in a real game. Red faction guerilla was the closest but the cost was super bland environments. A pretty city like in this demo is not likely to really be destructible in an actual game with more mechanics than just blowing specific buildings up... It does look amazing, though
@Samuel Gabe wrong, voxels won't make it any easier because instead of models you should now consider every voxel which is a lot more costly than simulating physics with polygonal shapes. This guy's game looks a little bit more detailed than minecraft and it already can't run on consoles and lower-end pcs. Imagine this technology but with actual detailed models. This won't work and it will be like this for a long time. Also, when first game engines started to appear, there was already a choice between voxel graphics and polygonal graphics. Humanity has chosen the second one because it is a lot more efficient and easier to work with. Voxel graphics exist for longer than you might be thinking.
@@MacMan2152 Then what is the reason for him using voxels instead of polygons?
@@a.banana to make this fully destructible game world system. This is the only reason. If your game is as undetailed as this guy's, voxels are obviously easier to work with if you want full destructibility. This isn't the case with highly detailed games though (or any games with modern graphics).
Hope we see a making of this clip going up soon, not bad!
Bro this looks dope
"I'm compensating for your lack of skill, with higher caliber weaponry" That was pretty funny haha
i can' t believe I'm seeing it.

@@ThreeTreeDog yea, i know. I think BF is over
This tech demo might look like something you'd play in an arcade. I'd love to see Epic Games make arcade games, even though Infinity Blade DX is a port rather than a true Epic Games arcade game
10 years ago there was Geo-Mod 2.0, in Red Faction Guerrilla, capable of... pretty much the same things as in this video. Oh, the good ol' past forgotten...
Well, as cool as it was, it wasn't on the same scale at all, and much simpler. But i still play Guerilla indeed haha
not even close... that's nostalgia
Robocop Rouge city is honestly the first game I can think of (Unreal Engine wise at least) that has physics/destruction like this. Not on this scale, but anyone that's played the game or seen gameplay knows the environments are full of destroyable items/cover etc. And they look a lot like the physics in this tech demo. Esp the part at 0:38 But Robcop is UE5. You can tell from looking at the config files etc that it dose use Epic's in house physics engine "Chaos". But also uses UE5's Niagra particle FX system together with Chaos to accomplish the destruction effects.
What I wouldn't give for this version of Robo Recall. If Epic won't develop it, I hope the modding community can figure out how to incorporate the new engine capabilities into the game.
Robo: **destroys buildings and made a chaos** Pedestrians and people in the buildings: "guess i'll die"
If only battlefield stops their historical wandering and goes back to a modern combat game with this physics.
They will - but lets be honest - if you have an environment that is completely destructible this might end up making it unplayable - building will be destroyed in every round pretty much in the first minute and you would end up with a flat map most of the time
**FACEPALM**
Oh cool... I never saw this. Nice to see the Roborecall stuff here.
Another huge step in developing the Engine

Destruction/advanced physics is the biggest leap game engines can make next gen, it actually improves gameplay whereas going from 4k textures to 8k textures I couldn't care less about
Nice and everything I wonder if we going to see this in 10 years or so in games-
so i want to know if they will be using full blueprint again, or if they need to implement C++ coding.

Imagine VR games running with chaos physics. That is going to be awesome!!!!!! I can't wait to try this with a couple of VR demos that I have!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I hope you have a personal supercomputer to run something like this in VR at an acceptable resolution.
This looks pre-rendered... I'll believe it when I have a demo to actually play.
I'm friends with a few people who visited GDC this year and got a chance to try this demo. It's very much real-time and running on a mid-to-high-end gaming PC at the conference. It's being played using VR controllers, but not with a headset hence the on-rails shooting.
It’s a fake tech demo built to build useless hype. Think of all the videos you’ve seen in the past just like this. Now think about all the games you’ve seen that tech in. Yea zero.
@@KaboosOnX1 I don't think this is pre-rendered but I'm not impressed at all. Red Faction Guerrilla had very similar physics and that was more than 10 years ago. Without it being a demo specifically to show off destruction. This is more of the same, just scaled up a bit. Not really though. At least you could destroy entire structures in RF. In this one right here there's just pieces of the walls falling off and the entire buildings collapsing are a scripted sequence at the end.
Nobody: Strucid: It's showtime
Bullets and explosions don't warp the foundational rebarb nor does it cave in the rooftop of a car dynamically; and instead only uses decals. You can see the tricks at face value. Frostbite2 with Bad Company had this a decade ago.
A tech demo for physics destruction starts off with "Breaking News". Nice.
personally id rather zero debre and refocus all the effort onto teaching 3d geomatry to destruct. pillars and walls acurately flying around. both are great options, but the realistic interactions would be far more interesting than debre spam
I agree, i want to see that big building collapse under its own weight realisticaly.
@@Para87Creative it's doable in chaos, but it's not fun to play at all. That's why nobody does that.
That's how my brother used to break my sand castle.

Not really the are switching because performance will be better
@@pratyush6487 time will tell
Wtf are you ppl actually talking about? Do you know how engines and game development actually works? Fortnite won't have any of this destruction level, because it would make the game a whole different game which wouldn't be fortnite anymore. They just switch to a different engine to have better performance with the stuff they have NOW in their game. Same if Anet would put their game Guild Wars 2 into unreal engine, the game would be able to run at steady 60 fps during huge events instead of this 15 fps mess, just because the UE just handles stuff better.
Imagine a GTA game where you can destroy the whole map and it actually stays like that for the whole playthrough and the missions and NPCs behavior change based on destruction you caused. We'll probably never see something like that but it would be amazing.
I'm hoping Transformers Reactivate gets this. It would make so much sense.
It's so demanding that can't even go wide-screen
Hope they add Ragdoll
I would love to see an FPS like battlefield incorporate this into their games. They try to say their games have destruction but it's not what gamers want. This is pretty dope tho
2020 and i still wait for game like that
I love how epic teased fortnite getthing this as an upgrade for 2020 way before it even came out by putting the air royale theme at the end.
That theme muisic was made for another epic game called robo recall, epic added it to fortnite as an Easter egg
