Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
We passed upon the stair
We spoke of was and when
Although I wasn't there
He said I was his friend
Which came as some surprise
I spoke into his eyes, "I thought you died alone
A long long time ago"
[Chorus]
Oh no, not me
I never lost control
You're face to face
With the man who sold the world
[Verse 2]
I laughed and shook his hand
And made my way back home
I searched for form and land
For years and years I roamed
I gazed a gazeless stare
At all the millions here
We must have died alone
A long long time ago
[Chorus]
Who knows? Not me
We never lost control
You're face to face
With the man who sold the world
Who knows? Not me
We never lost control
You're face to face
With the man who sold the world
About David Bowie:
David Bowie redefined musical genres and the potential of live performance for generations of music lovers. Creating and discarding a variety of personae and restlessly challenging musical boundaries, Bowie released timeless albums including Space Oddity, Hunky Dory, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust…, Aladdin Sane, Diamond Dogs, Young Americans, Station to Station, "Heroes,” Let's Dance, Heathen, The Next Day and many more. Blackstar, Bowie’s 28th and final studio album, was released on his 69th birthday, January 8, 2016. David Bowie died on January 10, 2016, two days after the release of Blackstar. His body of work, his influence on the worlds of music, art, fashion, film, theatre and beyond, and his legacy of innovation and reinvention will live forever. 2022 kicks off with Bowie at 75, a celebration of his 75th birthday with the Brilliant Adventure box set, the previously unreleased Toy, the 50th anniversary of Ziggy Stardust and a series of special events.

  • This song really hits hard. We've all been there where we look at a version of ourselves and we don't recognize the person we're looking at. I myself struggled with my identity and a way to express myself. I was left with a lot of question: "How did this happen?" "Who am I?" "What's happening to me?" "Why are we still here?" Granted, this only came up after I woke up from a 9 year rest and my friend had convinced me that I was him.

  • This song, originally written by David Bowie and later performed by Nirvana, is about a man who is shocked to meet the other version of himself or his personality he thought had been done away with. He is able to recognize this different version because it's probably from his past and he thought he had buried it.

    • The phrase "The man who sold the world" likely meant that he sold himself in order to gain fame. "We spoke of was and when" meant they were talking about the past, and that the guy he talking to says "you must've died alone, a long long time ago" which he denies by saying "Oh no, not me, I never lost control". and then "I laughed and shook hand And made my way back home" and then realizes "I must have died alone, a long, long time ago".

    • I think the stair is the Stair of Jacob where the angels go up and go down. "I thought you died alone a long long time ago" which for me it means he recognized him as Judas Iscariot the edomite. He had died before in another eon when he refused to kneel before the Son of God, there was a battle in heaven and Saint Michael pierced him with the sword of truth saying that nobody could be God. He was ousted from heaven and fell on the Earth. He charged 30 silver pieces to betray Jesus and Jesus had said to the twelve one of you is a devil. But then he should have died alone as it says in the Gospels that he hung himself , but in the Acts it says he fell and his body divided in two. Maybe and this is something I think about sometimes, maybe Judas has never died , he is the antichrist instilling fear in all humans, persecuting, torturing and killing. And some may think that if they become friend of him things will go better for him. There's no agreements with a lier and cheater and an assassin. There's no agreement. Judas will hate everthing God created. Yes, he sold the world literally. I will not go into the financial part of the situation. He sold us all. Jesus bought us all at a high price. As he is a liar he will say he never lost control. He never had any control at all. And yes he died a long long time ago in another Eon. This requires some readings in the world of the angels by priest Forteya. This book has a pdf on the web, but you'd better buy it on a bookstore. It's a cheap book.

They recently re-released Space Oddity with new mixes and (finally) Conversation Piece included in the official tracklisting so it shouldn't be a surprise they've re-mixed and rereleased the next chronological. As we've also already had official re-mixed versions of Station To Station and Lodger I hope this isn't something they're going to carry on with, especially as Bowie's not around to approve them.

  • This song represents a very specific feeling to me. it makes me imagine a scenario where two people from very different backgrounds (such as a successful person and a poor/unsuccessful person) meet who think they know each other end up meeting and having a conversation. they have some assumptions about one another and maybe they make some conclusions about one another, but they both come away from the conversation as feeling like they never really know or understood the other person and therefore feel very isolated and alone. In general have you ever had a conversation with someone where you feel so incompatible with that you come away from the conversation feeling or empty? as though you never learned anything about them and they didn't learn a thing about you. it was just an empty useless conversation. any rest in peace David and Kurt.

I went to the pub and someone put this 'B' side on the jukebox and I was blown away, it sounded fantastic and I'd never heard it before! I always put this one on when "having a jar" and the juke box bass sound was great. The idea of multiverse concept was first hinted at by Greek philosophers almost 3000 years ago. the more scientific concept we are familiar with today also predates Bowie by a few decades. But overall, a great work is larger than the person who wrote it and had he wanted to get a specific point across, he would have made it clear. So just ramp up your imagination so we can all find our own interpretations and discuss them together. It's what connects people. It's great art.

  • We passed upon the stair We spoke of was and when Although I wasn't there He said I was his friend Which came as some surprise I spoke into his eyes, "I thought you died alone A long long time ago" [Chorus] Oh no, not me I never lost control You're face to face With the man who sold the world [Verse 2] I laughed and shook his hand And made my way back home I searched for form and land For years and years I roamed I gazed a gazely stare At all the millions here We must have died alone A long long time ago [Chorus] Who knows? Not me We never lost control You're face to face With the man who sold the world Who knows? Not me We never lost control You're face to face With the man who sold the world

  • David Bowie deserves a great medal for this artistic work because he was truly an unique musician creating numerous great songs in his career. His persona and style was really out of the space. The voice connected to it is just beyond the world. One man so much talent: singing, acting, playing many instruments, above that a beautiful man with so much charisma, That was David Bowie. RIP.

  • After Bowie had sadly passed away, my dad used to play this song all the time. As a child I never appreciated his music. In the recent years I was going through some old cd's that my parents had made and of course, this song was on one of them. I ended up really liking the song and I started to listen to more of David Bowies songs. Now Bowie is one of my favourite artists and the man who sold the world is an all time favourite. He was a legend and must never be forgotten.
