If Auto Capture was improved, why can't we select Birds???
Really, we need the Pre Capture in RAW...... please Nikon, bring this feature in Z9.
I fear that C15 is a sign of they will never give it to us.
@@BroskisnowskiDont have to be 20fps, even 10fps is enough in many cases.
@@Broskisnowski time till tell.
I just need the RAW pre-capture. I would pay for that upgrade, the most meaningful upgrade needed.
I agree with your pre-capture RAW recommendation to Nikon. I do not want to compromise quality!
Fully agree....As a wildlife photographer pre capture raw and at least 10 FPS !! 30 FPS raw and pixel shift would be nice as well.... Cheers,
Pixel shift, HEIF, open gate video, video shutter angle… hopefully some of these in a future update.
Video recording to ssd, video to both cards too :)
I really respect Nikon. If I didn't shoot Canon, Nikon would be my choice. I started my photography with Nikon, on 35mm film at 10 years old, believe it or not in the early 80s. My father got me started in photography.
Yes yes yes to adding precapture raw
Yeah! Pre-Capture in RAW is a MUST!
The GOAT mirrorless camera ❤
I really hope the pre-capture raw is possible, and if so, I can't understand why it hasn't been part of a firmware update when so many people have been asking for it.
Awesome opening and cool firmware update news. Great video.
Love that outtake at the end 😂
Pre capture raw in star mode should be possible - I am fine with 10 frames
Agree 👏
Yes, pre-capture in RAW is something I would use a lot. Also, why didn't we get pixel shift like the Z8 has?
Nikon sure is on a roll with these updates! Perhaps there is benefit to updating them as they get to bolster the specs after the initial design phase, and this could attract new buyers as it makes the camera more competitive - meanwhile Nikon are amortising their initial R&D investment (into tooling, processes etc) and possibly even improve their margins due to other supply chain efficiencies.
I'd take 8-10fps RAW in precapture... or a frames limit (10frames?)... or a hard time cap of even half or quarter a second before release. Just give us a lil nugget of RAW precapture!
Makes it very interesting to see what happens next with camera version will offer.
I have bought a d850 6 months ago. I will wait two or three generation of flagship mirrorless so that the used market really picks up and then change my d850 :) I have much more fun than I thought, also playing with older lenses like the bigear 80-200.
Feels like this was FW 4.3, not 5.0. Basics still missing: 1. Blinkies/Zebras in stills. 2. Subject eye detection in Manual Focus (i.e. Zf). 3. Pixel shift. 4. Pre-capture in RAW with more on the list - but start there.
I'm always happy when they come and bring a new firmware update. 👍😃
Hello Matt, Just like to say I have just replaced all but 5 of my F glass lenses and all but 1 of my Nikon DSLR's to now shooting just Nikon Z system ie Z9 and Z8. I feel that Nikon has done an amazing job in moving from a great system with their F mount, over 100 years of development to an even better Z system. Thank you Nikon. I to love the way that Nikon have been continually updating all of there Z system cameras with new firmware. I to would love pre and post capture to shoot RAW even limiting to the speed that we have now.
As someone who quickly tired of the Mode stickiness problem when switching between stills and video, I’m very pleased they caught up and isolated the stills and video modes more completely. That had been the primary sign to me that Nikon firmware engineering remained stuck in the pre-video era where in the past a mode dial would/could override every other setting in the camera and it sort of made sense for the firmware setting to behave in the same way. Thankfully not any more. Progress! And as someone who uses timecode often, and who quickly discovered you could have BT timecode or the external grip-but not both-that’s a nice improvement as well. But we still don’t have fractional frame rates or shutter angles or at least a 1/48th shutter speed kludge. So it’s not a camera you can use for higher end film and commercial work. If the spec sheet says 23.976, then that’s exactly what you need to be able to specify in camera where sometimes a client is asking for straight 24p which is a separate frame rate. A pro video camera has to be able to do both. For personal projects it’s not a big deal. But if there’s a skilled DIT on set, you’ll get called out. And that’s not how you keep a good reputation in the film business. So half-progress, but progress in video nevertheless.
Please explain to me how the banks are separate. I'm not seeing them separate...what am I doing wrong ??
@@sleekimagesphotography It appears I have misunderstood how others described the 5.00 update. At least the PASM setting is now independent between stills and video modes which certainly helps in hybrid settings, but one of the summaries I watched yesterday said there were effectively 8 memory banks, but that idea turns out to be someone’s wishful thinking. I apologize for the confusion. And yes, Nikon continues to dodge the inevitable requirement of completely separate stills and video modes.
Pre-capture RAW…that’d be nice. But where is the “one-button cycle through AF modes” feature that the Z8 just got?!?!?
Good upgrade, though I was REALLY hoping for pixel-shifting now that it is available for the Z8. I wonder if there's a hardware difference that allows this to work with the Z8 but not the Z9?
Pre Capture in RAW, that's what I am waiting for. Please, Nikon, hear our voices
I agree... 10fps with pre-capture in Raw, would still be useful.
Lovely
Thank you for being fair about this, unlike some other biased KZhead photography influencers who just hate on Nikon without reasonable explanation.
I would really like pre capture raw!! But also increased raw frame rate!
Did you install 2nd update along with main update as well?
I agree there will be no notable firmware updates for the z6ii/7ii. I do feel there's is reason for people to be disappointed as the mki and obvious the z8/9 had so many leaps and grew so much. But cannot really change that. I think improved subject detection would be reasonable though, even if it's very much a 'I am look for birds' or 'I am looking for cars' or whatever 'limited' mode, building on the face and pet settings already there. WhY CaN yOu NoT mAkE ThAt HaPpEn ThAtNiKoNgUy?!
Frustrating that there have been very few firmware updates on Z6ii. I have 2 of these and the updates have been minimal
I would love precapture raw at 10 fps, but i would even be happy with 10bit heif files, or even lower framerates as a first step, everything to get more bit depth out of precapture. Ideally to switch to the normal raw modes after the precapture
I've asked Nikon for hand-held, in-camera focus stacking and bracketing firmware, similar to the OM cameras for macro.
Better N-log profile plus native color profile for video!
I hope they bring some of these features via firmware updates for the previous generations Z cameras.
Well ver. 5 doesn't provide NX with the Picture Control Setting Info/ability to change, so it is back to FW 4.1
This is nikons flagship camera. I would really like to see pixel shift in the z9 and 30fps in raw. That would be worthy of a "major" update, this update was a little disappointing.
I think that would need new hardware.
Cool...
The MC-N10 in Portrait mode hasn’t been fixed, if you didn’t know it only work properly in landscape mode
FYI, I would definitely appreciate Nikon going with your interim idea for pre-capture until they can work up to a full pre-capture mode in RAW. Truth be known, it would probably serve my purposes.
Pixel shift???
Nikon you have one job... precapture Raw. I want it now! -Veruca Salt
What do you think of the missing HEIF save / pixel shift? Are these "amateur only"? I didn't care about skin softening or portrait "rich tone" b/c I'm okay doing that stuff in post... but I can't improve JPEG quality in post (not that it's bad... but if we 100% know that z9 can do HEIF due to HEIF upload added, why can't we just have save).
For me the most important thing is enable to program buttons to change type of object in object detection mode. This is so frustrating when i got set up for bird detection and the the fox is coming out.
How about the Zf?
Precapture raw please Nikon
Thanks Matt. Pre-Capture RAW is the one enhancement I have been waiting for and i am frustrated that this new firmware still doesn't offer it. I am not interested in super high speed capture such as the 60 & 120fps that Nikon offer with JPEG ( as well as the slower speed), I would be happy with 20fps RAW Pre-Capture, 30 would be fantastic. I am concerned that Nikon might be holding this back for the next generation Z9. As a 75 year old pensioner, the Z9 & Z8 are the last bodies i will ever buy so this is the last enhancement I really want.
SnapBridge remote feature to work on the Z8! How is that not a thing yet?! It works with my older cameras. With my Z8 though I had to buy that crappy remote from Nikon. Actually it isn’t crappy, but it’s small and I lost it already.
Pre-Capture RAW please--sports (especially baseball)
Precapture RAW would be great, but I'm holding my breath, maybe for a long time, for subject detection in MF. Nikon's best lens, the NOCT, is usable on the ZF, but much less so with the Z8 and Z9.
You own the NOCT?? The modern one?
@@mattgrangerI rented it once, and then found a used copy for 30% less than retail. It's an amazing lens, but I've been using it with burst modes to make sure to hit focus. I've even used it with success on moving targets with 20fps. I also do a lot of astro work and the purple fringing aside, it's great for timelapses. When I tried the Voigtlander Nokton f1 on the ZF, it was much easier to use with the eye detection than with the Z8 and Z9. I just think it would be nice if Nikon offered that feature on their flagship cameras. It's super helpful with chipped MF lenses.
Did Nikon sort out the AF issue that you pointed out before by this firmware
Nope
Has anyone figured out how to set up shooting and video menu banks independently from each other or do we need to wait for 5.01?
Does 5.0 prevent drops? 😅 Sorry Matt, just couldn’t pass that one up. 😉
It just drops faster. 🤣🤣🤣
How i can Download your this VDO about Z9 Latest firmware 5.00 ?
Give us the option of Pre-Capture RAW Nikon! Reduce capabilities if needed, but Pre-Capture RAW!
1) simultaneously recording on 2 memory cards!! 2) Pixel shift 3) canceling auto-framing when using dx lenses!!!
pre-capture RAW and auto-capture combined (e.g. for lightning-capture...)🤗
At some point it’s just a remote camera, no need for a photographer - just a programmer 😂
And the Z6iii? 😩
What do we want? Pre-capture in RAW! When do we want it? 8 seconds ago!
Where is pixel-shift??? The Z8 has had it for a while now but the flagship Z9 still doesn’t? I agree that raw pre-capture would be great and I want that too, but come on, why is the Z9 not catching up with Z9 on key features?
No Hi rez?
Yet I’m still waiting for firmware 2.0 for my Sony a1 😩 If Nikon makes smaller 50 1.2 and 24-70 2.8, I’m switching.
I doubt they’ll remake those lenses
Not as major as the last updates, maybe this is a sign of nikon relaxing their support with this camera and working on softwear for future hardware
Pre-capture in jpeg Why !
Pixel shift
Yes please Nikon, Pre-capture in RAW please, JPEG not any use to me!
I hope that Nikon doesn't artifically throttle the Z8, just to keep Z9 as the flagship in their line-up.
Please precapture in raw
I’m still waiting for 30fps in raw
The functions and operation of the Z9 and Z8 must be IDENTICAL!!! PLEASE Nikon makes a synchronisation of the firmware to the same level. - The strength of Nikon lies in the standardised operation. The Z8 is also the backup camera for many professional photographers.
Umm. It isn’t that good this time around is it though Matt?
Personally I wish that Nikon would improve the bank system which currently is hardly ideal in that changes can be made to bank settings when shooting... which then stick. There needs to be a 'master' set of banks which remains inviolate and a 'user' set of banks, based on the master but allowing changes on the fly... which can then be replaced by the master as and when required, or, replacing the master if its an improvement over the master. The need to save the banks to a card and then re-load the banks back into the camera is... how shall I put it... rubbish !
Expected to see pixel shift but it's ok not much needed one
PRE CAPTURE RAW PLEASE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wish they gave us the ability to cycle af modes like the z8 and was hoping for higher still frame rate in raw.
They did (AF cycle) 👍🏻
I suppose 4:5 Aspect and pixel shift is too much to ask? Perhaps the YOUNG engineers have never seen 4:5/8x10 cameras?
30fps and pre capture RAW for wildlife photography 😢
More gimmicks from Nikon, give us things we need, How about a shutter button that can be felt with freezing cold fingers or wearing gloves. Software.. then where is the shutter speed bracketing for panning for sports photography.
Most photographers that own a Z9 shoot in RAW. So to keep improving the JPEG pre-capture functionality is not providing value. I would be happy with 10fps with pre-capture RAW even limited to 1 second, if only to simply counter the average human reaction time to visual stimulus of around 250 milliseconds.
nikon has the best service for customer service upgrades Sony eventually will learn the hard way
free of charge 97 dollers?.
??
Which is the flagship camera, Z8 or Z9? I paid for the Z9 and disappointed that the Z8 is the same as the Z9 but cheaper. I was hoping g the new firmware would have features NOT in the Z8 and which would stay unique to the Z9. It would be nice to have pre-capture RAW, and blinkies would have been nice. No wonder people are selling their Z9 and buying Z8, they still make money left over from the sale. Come on Nikon people wait over a year for the Z9, place thousands of dollars down to hold their position for the Z9. When people ask me if they should buy Z8 or Z9 I tell them buy Z8 same basically the same camera but cheaper.
The z9 is flagship. Z8 is NOT the same.
You're late,,,, everyone else has reported on 5.0. Time for me to go to bed !!!
It took you 4 minutes to comment? Lame... haha
😅😅@@mattgranger
Especially The greatest Firmware Camera is Nikon and Fuji no doubt as compared to Sony never reflect human or customer kindness and a sense of humor. Nikon and Sony CEO are both Japanese but Nikon one are so human friendly and always gives best firmare but Sony never. Shame on Sony.
Nikon....go strong....or...GO HOME
Underwhelming
Lucky it's free and optional :)
@@mattgranger no complaints about getting any improvements but for a major revision as in 4 to 5 this could have been so much more, feels much more like a 4.2 - 4.3 update
In a word, disappointment.
Cool...
