A thick copper wire in a burning flame can cause the flame to take a green hue. Running some in a wick can be fun.

+Joseph Santi I actually tried that! Didn't work out for me in time for filming. I couldn't dissolve enough to get a good red flame, just flecks of red here and there. I'm pretty sure it was saturated, but I was in a hurry to finish. Might try lithium at some point.

I'm awestruck at the number of commenters who think they're sooo smart in pointing out that "It's not a REAL lightsaber" or "pfft it's just a flamethrower torch on a handle". To those geniuses leaving these kinds of comments - WE GET IT. EVERYONE KNOWS ITS NOT A REAL LIGHTSABER LIKE IN THE MOVIES. WE KNOW THEY'RE FICTIONAL (so far). However, what people need to understand is that the idea and its execution is genius. It is impressive. Not only did this guy think up of the bright idea to make a "realistic" looking lightsaber hilt shoot out a long, straight flame - he actually made a functional one complete with sound effects. Like seriously people, this guy made this as a hobby, and I have a lot of respect for his work. It takes a very special kind of stupid to dismiss or hate on him. This is amazing stuff and the number views and subscribers speak for it.

I misread what you said and thought you said bullets and that had me thinking. If storm troopers want to defeat a Jedi they shouldn't hurl massive amounts of delectable plasma (or lasers) at them and instead use traditional lead projectiles, lead would melt sure but that wouldn't stop the projectile. Instead it would turn into puddles of molten metal that would cause severe burns to the jedi.
+Adam Klotz the laser blasters in SW are completely impractical anyway. Good 'ol high velocity lead gets the job done. Always.

Wrong. This works using fire not laser, the "real thing" is completely different from this one, which just takes advantage of the look and imitates the purpose of the actual one. It's like believing that teleporting will be possible by looking at cars: both means of transportation, but completely different. And so fire and laser: completely different

The blade of a lightsaber is actually ignited plasma, which is a lot closer to fire than a laser. starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Lightsaber The only one who ever called it a "lazersword" was Lucas, who, much like when he made the prequels, probably didn't give enough fucks about details to even consider all the ways that was stupid.
+Nothing to See Here If you put a burning candle in a microwave oven its flame turns in to plasma maybe flame of this "lightsaber" could be turned in to plasma too by using microwaves but I don't know if a magnetron could be miniatured to fit in to a lightsaber and if RF energy could be contained in to a thin beam like that to make it less dangerous it would certainly be illegal because it would cause interference to wireless communications.

You could have a solid rod in the middle that comes out when the flames do, so that it can still be used as a sword, but is concealed by the flames. Just an idea.

@@Gwynbleiddsanity Hacksmith have a huge steel pipe and they never show the tip of the lightsaber because it looks really awkward. It's hot, but it's essentially a glorified blowtorch. Until they make it compact at least somewhere in the range of what's seen in this video it will be the closest to a lightsaber not just in the "technically" part. Styropyro still takes the prize, but I would say Allen Poe's saber is better than hacksmith's but only now. The lightsaber pike is already very impressive. Unfortunately styropyro's saber's length is much longer than that of a canon accurate saber because it's essentialy a strong laser from a saber's hilt

I think this lightsaber is still great. The hacksmith lightsabers are very powerful, but it's a trade off with how self contained it is. This one is just a hilt. It's also relatively safe and affordable, enough that other makers can make it. I'd like to see you make a new and improved version.

+Peter Terren Wow! Thank you for watching! I had to add the acetone because at night it was maybe 5 degrees Celsius, well under methanol's flash point. I even considered trying diethyl ether mixed with methanol, but decided that was way too dangerous. I don't know if you remember but maybe 5 years ago I sent you an email asking about this very project, back when I was an undergrad in college. Your reply helped me out a lot! It wasn't until now that I had an excuse to finally finish, what with the movie and the success of my other youtube videos. Couldn't have done it without you! Thanks!

I don't see how this comment is difficult to understand. Very simple is the jist of it. We will jack each other up so bad in a world war 3 we will literally get knocked back to the stone age. It's not going to get more "solid". It's a stream of flammable liquid fuel and as long as that design feature remains the blade could never be more solid.
TheRPGentleman If there's an opening in the glass, the fire would still be able to get through, making it still burn, just not as powerful. And if it becomes more Concentrated, the fire doesn't spread around as much.

"Normal fire" is yellow and orange. I'm talking bright red.
WeylandYutaniInc91 there is a liquid that would make it burn red for example Ethanol and SrCl2+6H2O but jet I have not tried it out that way as in a lined flame
Strontium Chloride. Somewhat soluble in alcohol and VERY red when burnt.
***** I have an even better idea! Potassium Chloride makes the flame purple. So to eliminate ALL shades of yellow, use Potassium Chloride (purple) AND Strontium Chloride (bright red). I'd expect a bloody burgundy color. Which would look just plain epic.

I understand what you're talking about, as some type of acoustic or perhaps piezo tranducer, EM field, or even an microprocessor-controlled air pump might affect the "blade" appearance. But, given the care and slow-motion technique I saw him using with the CURRENT design, it strongly suggests the gas "blade" wouldn't stay stable enough to remain ignited if manipulated too rapidly or with effectors that produce high enough magnitude changes to make a clearly visible difference in the "blade".
How did this guy not the Guinness world record tho. The one that got the record is still impressive but not as close to this one just lasts longer

It did in some respects but this one is more like a lightsaber in that everything needed is in the handle .
Hacksmith made a more powerful Lightsaber, but this one is more film accurate.
