    • Same. It made me realize something kinda big related to where I live. I think a lot of it has to do with being Southern myself. I was born and raised in Johnson City, TN, in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains. And somehow....I'm still here, despite living elsewhere earlier in life. I've always had a love/hate feeling toward the South and often yearn to leave it....to go live somewhere more on my wavelength, someplace in the Pacific north-west maybe. But artists like Ethel Cain make me fall in love with my Southern home in a way hard to put to words. I used to HATE summers here. Just hot and humid....with the death rattle of countless cicadas reverberating everywhere. Doing laundry on my days off at the dusty dilapidated laundromat, called Wash-a-Rama....of course, with the low-key racist "Here's How....to use the machines..." poster featuring a Native American that literally has a 1962 copyright in the corner. While waiting on my clothes, sweltering under the white hot sun, random vagrants stop to ask me for a smoke...or ask if I know anyone selling suboxone or nerve pills. It's all so overwhelmingly weird and awful and gross sometimes. Corporate kitsch fucking everywhere.... And then I discover Ethel....her music, her outlook, all of it. And I see her embracing all that....owning that culture and those roots as rightfully hers too. And it makes me realize, deep down, this IS home for me too.....and I probably would hate living in Portland or Seattle in the long run. There's a real tragic beauty in overlooked South. Real life Thelma and Louis characters everywhere. Sometimes it's scary or dangerous or genuinely awful. But it's often deeply romantic....Southern Gothic in the best and broadest sense of that term. I might live somewhere else one day.....but for now, I'm honestly happy to be here. I belong too.....I'm a part of this too. And Ethel's music and entire cinematic world made me realize that more than just about anything else. It's crazy, and super cool that mere music and visuals can do that.....

I've been watching you (You know it, you know it, you know it's true) Couldn't fight to save your life, but you look so cool Camo' jacket, robbing corner stores Hard odds to beat when you're on all fours Good men die too, oh, I'd rather be with you, you, you I owe you a black eye and two kisses Tell me when you wanna come and get 'em I only want him if he says it first to me I wanna, uh, him in the back of his mom's Mercury He looks like he works with his hands, and smells like Marlboro Reds It makes me so, uh, and I can't get enough of it Something's been feeling weird lately There's just something about you, baby (there's just something about you, baby) Maybe I'll just be crazy (I'll be crazy) And piss him off 'til he hates me Low slung bad bitch, baby, come and get you some Can you read my mind? I've been watching you Couldn't fight to save your life, but you look so cool (You know it, you know it, you know, oh) Camo' jacket, robbing corner stores Hard odds to beat when you're on all fours Good men die too, so I'd rather be with you, you, you I'd rather be with you, oh Oh, I'd rather be with you, oh 'Cause good men die too, so I'd rather be with you

But I think the video is rather more the equivalent of someone staring obsessively at themselves in the mirror and slow jerking off at what they see until they’re raw and bleeding. You know what I mean? Like The suffering and the impossible desires lurking beneath are palpable too. The emptiness is there for all who wish to see too. Art as seen through a lens of mindless vanity and constant self indulgence. Also I think it’s an ad for Blue Rhino Gas refills.

  • I know this is supposed to portray southern small town America but I grew in upstate NY and this gives me such heavy hometown vibes as well. Furthermore I absolutely LOVE Ethel Cains aesthetic, especially if you look at in the over arching banner of “trans art”. A lot of trans individuals center their aesthetic around society, consumerism, fashion, which are all issues pertinent to the trans experience but this speaks to something much deeper than all of that. People forget that trans folks don’t just pop up fully grown in NYC or San Fransisco like clones. We all come from somewhere and have experiences that shaped who we are

    @vrih5467@vrih54672 жыл бұрын
    • I couldn't agree more. It's also rather interesting to me how often my latest favorite artist has turned out to be trans. It's happened a number of times, WAY more than population metrics would suggest. It's almost as if trans people have something very interesting and creative and novel to say about the human condition....and that's captivating and inspiring for everyone, including non-trans people(such as myself). I was a fan of Hayden/Ethel's music for months before I realized she was trans. Even though it isn't overt in her art....once I knew that fact, it kinda contextualized her work and made it an order of magnitude more interesting. Even though I'm a cis straight guy.....I think our recent examination of what gender and sexuality ARE and MEAN....is important interesting and overdue. And even though I'm not directly a part of that community....I've found it quite healthy and liberating to apply to my own self and being in this world. I'm straight and cis....but have WAY more in common with someone like Ethel....than the majority of other straight cis guys. In other words....it would be cool if we could stop talking about the trans issue as something to be "tolerated" as if we're just putting up with it or allowing it. And instead look at it as a refreshing take on what being human does mean, should mean, and can mean....specifically related to gender and sexuality, as those are so deeply primary, but also to....ya know, everything else too. Anyway, like you said....it's refreshing to hear/see a trans perspective coming from this burnt-out rural southern evangelical perspective. As a very liberal person myself, living in a relatively small town in the foothills of the Appalachians in Tennessee....it's honestly really cool to find someone so creative who didn't grow up in some big city coastal secular world. All that's great too....but so is this. Rant....over, for now :P

    • huhh, we actually had this conversation - so basically this sentence happened in a conversation form - with my host brother when i spent a year in a nebraska small town not unlike the town in the video. we were driving pretty aimlessly around town in his car, looking for people to talk to, things to do to spend the time with. this was one of the first times I joined him doing this and i - as an eastern european kid not much after the iron curtain fell - was fascinated with the fact that 16-year-olds there had cars and drove around just for fun where in my country a whole lot of families didn't own a single car and when they did, a lot of them only used it rarely to save the gas-money. i told him, man, this is what kids in my country dream of. he said "people dream of THIS"? of course for him it was the same-old-same-old, doing it the n-th time, meeting up with the same few people as it was a really small town, being bored out of their minds as there was nothing they could - legally - do around town. of course later i got what he was talking about. btw is this a quote from somewhere, or did you just come up with that sentence?

Like I remember this one day me and a friend walked around looking for her dog, Nike was his name. She swiped a bottle of peppermint schnapps and a half pack of virginia slims from her mom and we set out all over town looking for this dog, taking shots and ducking the cops. We found her dog eventually, although looking back on it we may have just stolen a random dog instead.
