I Restored and Modernized an Old Carbon Road Bike

I bought this bike a little while ago because it was a cheap carbon bike. The old shimano 105 9 speed components were a little worn and not shifting as well as I would like so I wanted to upgrade them. The ISIS drive bottom bracket was also starting to creak a bit and wanted to see if I could replace it with hollowtech II. I also wanted to get some new compact drop bars and the wheels were out of true.
The wait-time on buying a new bike right now is about 6 months and buying a new carbon bike is prohibitively expensive so that was out of the question. I decided to install a brand new Tiagra 10 speed groupset and restore the rest of the bike. 11 speed would have been nice, but I would've had to buy new wheelsets.
There was also a small chip in the carbon fork from a certain ahem accident I had on the bike last year that I wanted to fix with some basic carbon bike frame repair. The carbon damage was mostly cosmetic. If the carbon fork was cracked I wouldn’t have tried any carbon repair and probably would have just replaced the fork. Carbon bike repair can be risky if you don't know what you're doing, but this fork was still in good enough shape to be repaired.
The original bike was a 2005 Giant OCR Composite 3 and had all of the original components on it when I purchased it.

  • Do NOT press the mekanic stand clamp directly on a carbon frame !!! Small cracks can build on that place that Will be bigger untill the frame seattube cracks / snaps in half !!! Use a aluminum seat post instead !!! And use the clamp on that !!! I have seen frames explode in halfe because of that !!!

    • And to make it worse, he clamps it on the wrong side first, then in the next scene it's clamped again the other way to crush it all the way around, plus it's an even worse to clamp it without the post inside.

  • for a frame insert like you were doing you can just use JB weld - steel stick or something - you can shape in however you like. after sand and paint. Its about the same process you did with your carbon fiber repair - but with a resin putty. and it would yield a nice result - great build - nice to see an old bike updated with more modern components - and I think Tiagra doesn't get enough love it's an amazing groupset.

  • Good job, only comment I can make is next time use fiberglass packing tape to fix the cables to the handlebars under the bar tape. Electrical tape stretches too much and the glue breaks down with heat.

  • I restored the same bike - 2005 OCR C3. The frame was in good shape but the original 105 drivetrain was shot. Went with a Sora drivetrain and FSA carbon crank from ebay and splurged on Fulcrum racing quattro rims. I didn't think the Shimano brakes were long enough - I guess they are- so went with Tektro long reach. Rides great. Your bike looks great without the graphics, BTW. That might be next.

  • I did the same with a 2011 Ridley X-Fire that I found at a pawn shop, rebuilt her into a gravel bike with SRAM Force 1X drivetrain. Added all red anodized titanium hardware. Came with Fulcrum racing 7 wheels and put some Donelly tires on her. Put a Garmin Explore out front to track my miles. She’s light and incredibly fast. Fun video, thanks……Rob K ( I can’t believe you clamped into the stand like that, please be careful and use the seat tube. Carbon doesn’t hold up to that kind of force.)

    @madrabbit64@madrabbit642 жыл бұрын
  • Always clamp the seatpost in the stand instead of the frame! Clamping it hard on the frame, if it is a lightweight and/or carbon one can cause it to crack, seatposts are much better since they are designed to take clamping forces.

    @griffinamend8310@griffinamend83102 жыл бұрын
    • This is just a myth. if your scared to clamp a frame tube for fear of braking/damaging it, please don’t ride the bike. Your just trying to hold the bike still, not crushing it like an empty can. Clamp wherever you like, put a cloth between clamp and bike to avoid scratching and just use an appropriate amount of force.

      @proffesorDub@proffesorDub2 жыл бұрын
    • @@proffesorDub Absolutely not a myth, I'm a bike mechanic and I've seen plenty of customers destroy their carbon frames doing exactly this. Carbon does not like being clamped, it isn't designed to bear loads like that

  • Hi! Amazing video. I was wondering: is it worth it to replace the rimbrakes with diskbrakes, both from a financial (how expensive is it vs how much value will it add) and a technical (i.e. how hard it is to pull off) perspective? I'm interested in doing a renovation of an old 2010 Specialized Crux :) thanks in advance.

    @casdessers9105@casdessers91052 жыл бұрын
    • No, because if the frame does not have disc brake mounts it is either a very costly endeavor our impossible. For carbon frames it is impossible as far as I know. For steel and aluminum adapters can be brazed onto the frame by a frame builder. Including some reinforcements that can deal with the asymmetric breaking forces onto the frame which rim brakes don't have. And you still need to buy/build a wheelset with fittings for the disc rotors, either Centerlock or 6-bolt. Concerning the groupset, you may have to change the shift/brake levers if you want to go hydraulic but that opens another rabbit hole. Regardless, it's a lot of work but I have seen people doing it. It depends on how much you value the bike. Still an awesome project.
