Ryan, Channing and Fred sit with JJ Redick to talk about how his life has revolved around hoops since an early age and as many aspects have transcended and faded over time, his love for the game and desire to be close to the sport still drives him everyday. From Duke to the NBA to basketball analyst to podcaster, the guys get JJ to open up in ways he hasn't shared before diving into his who, his why and his how and what's helped propel a white boy from Tennessee to sustain a reputation of respect and stardom in a sometimes unforgiving world of professional basketball and now broadcast television. The recent launch of his podcast “Mind the Game” alongside LeBron James shines a light on JJ's basketball IQ, but on this episode of the Pivot, the guys go far beyond his success on the court and break down where JJ's mindset comes from.
With the recent buzz around JJ's next basketball move in possibly becoming the head coach of the Charlotte Hornets, the choice may not be an easy one as the sharp shooter turned media star is fully aware of who he is and the life he's created after basketball through his various platforms and authentic relationships with current and former players alike.
Redick knew he wanted to be a Blue Devil after watching the 1992 NCAA championship between Duke and Kentucky, but without cable TV and money to put towards the game, he felt somewhat detached from it, but it was his family who continued to support him to fulfill his childhood dream. JJ found pride in working out of adverse situations, and he talks with the guys about how he developed his motivation and never lost that chip on his shoulder. Channing jokes with JJ about his A-hole type persona that he gives off, understanding Duke basketball players are often viewed as the enemy as JJ shares how he became the center of hate during his time with the Blue Devils. Despite his NCAA scoring title and notoriety, Redick was underestimated coming out of Duke and struggled to find a secure place in the NBA for his first few years but managed to prevail with a 15 year career.
Often looking back on what he didn't do vs what he did do, JJ points to several points in his life that he faced hardships, but his awareness, ability to constantly adapt and will to never be out-worked has brought him to the position he is today. Whether it was a missed shot in the 2004 NCAA finals against UConn or a 2009 Orlando Magic NBA Finals run, JJ has always had to bounce back from hard moments but one thing that has never been questioned is who he is as a leader on and off the court. A trusted voice during dark times, an advocate of right vs wrong and an innovator in the media space has elevated JJ to a place of respect and confidence that no matter what he says or does, he stands on it even if it's controversial or the unpopular thing to say.
Sharing many similarities with Ryan in his approach to media and journalism with respect to athletes and stories surrounding the game, JJ was the first active NBA player to start a podcast in 2016, and since has become one of the most respected and watched tv analysts. As his massive rise in sports media continues, JJ is now a part of ESPN's No. 1 crew preparing to call the NBA Finals which if he had to predict could be a Denver vs Boston series, although he's not counting out Minnesota just yet.

JJ has a lot to his story than we even knew before this convo
Channing you gotta proofread your comments when you post from the pod account! 😂
As someone who collects unique and hard to find hoodies, RC's collection is unmatched. Every week, his hoodie game is on point.
Right. He said ppl send them to him. I want more hoodies now. 😂
Hoodie by Tee Public
I have about 60 hoodies and he does have a stash. And ppl send them to me lmao. Wtg RC
Shoot same goes for his suits. Lol The brotha got style...
Yep that dawn jawn
Him and Kobe would’ve had an amazing detail oriented show🤦🏾♂️
Kobe, LeBron, and JJ would've been sick
100 percent
He already has one with LeBron 🤦🏿♂️🤦🏿♂️🤦🏿♂️ let the man rest
JJ is one of the best analysts in the game. He speaks so eloquently about the sport. If someone didn't understand sports or is struggling with era and facts. He's the guy!!! His stories are really good too👍
Jj is so detailed when it comes to basketball. His IQ is second to none 🔥🔥🔥
What better way to knock out these last few hours of work than listening to my favorite podcast 😎
I was dead thinking the same shitb
Preach
Love JJ and the Pivot!
Amen brother!
Works every time
JJ always been invited to the cookout 😂🔥
That’s kinfolk lol
Yep. we got him glass of lemonade, some macaroni and some ribs right next to uncle Joe. that’s our guy.
JJ will be a coach in the NBA. It's about where, not when.
Him and Bron will coach the same team lol
@kingdawg5830 that would honestly be awesome 😂
I'd love to see him coaching the Chicago Bulls!
Lakers
sure. i guess it is about his family, doing the 82 game grind again being away from them.
JJ Redick and Jamal Crawford are 2 former basketball players we didn't know we needed.
And they was teammates in LA
Bro hoops the right way. All the fundamentals and shot is ice. He was cooking at Duke. One of the best collegiate players of all time.
For some reason, I don't like Duke, but jj for some reason I gave a pass. Seemed middle class
That Dawn Staley sweater is TUFF 🔥
Right
Yes That's A Bad Hoodie
I’m a Maryland grad and was a Maryland diehard as a child (8-12 when he was there) and I HATED him and Duke so bad. This man is now one of my favorite personalities and basketball guys out there. Crazy how detailed and at the top he is now. Happy for him and never thought I’d say that as a former hater 😭
I also attended UofM...and I hated Duke but....Reddick might have changed my mind.
Man kids these days don’t know about that MD and Duke rivalry.
40 on MLK day is crazy 😂😂😂
Channing @ 1:00.30 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
RC and JJ... It don't get better than this 👍
“We’ll never know how good you can be.” “We didn’t win a championship because you aren’t worthy to be a champion.” Honest communication and accountability. Salute to the coaches for caring enough to tell the guy the truth.
JJ needed this interview. He is a far better person than I realized. So many should watch this and share it!! ❤ This is why The Pivot is the best show!
Learned a lot in this one
Glad I am not the only one who grew up without cable
Lmao facts idk why as a kid it was embarrassing now a days who has cable lol
We stole our cable from the next door neighbors 😂 the TRENCHES
We just paid a cable guy under the table. 50 bucks with all the channels for about 6 months
@@robert3kWe had got cable in the mid 90's then got the hot box every channel for like $200 for life.
Didn’t get cable and good internet till I got to high school 😂 in 06
This was so good to see JJ just conversing.
I worked with one of his sisters who is a twin in Durham at Brenntag Southeast. A chemical distribution company. She was in Sales. Awesome person and very down to earth. We use to tease her about how good looking her dad was when they showed him on TV when Duke played. This was in 2004/2005. I am glad I watched this because I heard so many bad things about him and I am a BIG UNC fan but now since I have heard about his regime and how structured he is, it answers a lot of questions. He is actually a nice person and to find out that he was in that fake fraternity being the only white guy, says a lot. Good interview and I wish him all the best on his next journey as a coach.
This was necessary. I follow Jj a lot and I learned a ton. Thank y’all for getting past the surface
Gained a lot of respect for JJ after watching this interview
Channing asks some super underrated questions, the whole pivot dynamic is amazing. Thank you guys, and shoutout to JJ who over has really showed his genius
overtime*
RC real as hell for acknowledging the Lebron "yep" 🤣
This is my favorite guy when it comes to talking basketball
Love what JJ says about falling in love with the process. We ONLY control the execution of things, NOT the results
Damn, love listening to JJ. And it is genuinely impressive to see him go from being one of the best hosts and allowing guests to speak, to being the one interviewed and being so eloquent and detailed.
First time seeing this podcast, blown away by how thoughtful the questions from everyone are. What a great watch.
The pivot keeps getting better and better.
22:32 Fred, thank you for that question!! I love hearing Kobe stories and especially from J.J.
Hello to THE PIVOT and everyone involved with THE PIVOT as well as those watching. Great 👍 episode 👏 once again.JJ Reddick is a real one didn't see this coming. Who going to call him first his mom or wife kids cover your ears lol 😆 😂. This what make THE PIVOT so amazing the comfort of the guest to be themselves and tell their story. To everyone involved and watching THE PIVOT truly blessed and highly favored enjoy the rest of the day.
I am a Die Hard UNC Tarheel fan from Salisbury/Charlotte NC. However much I've hated Duke over the years, I have always had mad respect and have been a quiet fan of Mr. JJ Reddick. The Pivot once again hit a homerun with this interview🎤💯🎧🔥
We needed another HOUR with JJ!!!👏🏽👏🏻👏🏿🏆🏆🏆👏🏽👏🏻👏🏿
I’ve just discovered this podcast and been in a rabbit hole! I love how these guys conduct themselves
Love this conversation! Me fan girling on JJ has gone up 1000% after this. Keep it coming guys!
It was fascinating to hear yall dive in to faith. Appreciate the candid conversation on the topic.
Great, great interview. I love this podcast because each host plays their position well. Editing is top tier.
Jj redick a rare breed. I like him. Rarely shows emotions. Always calm n laid back. I hated him at duke. But was a fan once he was in LA. Sharp shooter 🔥🏀🔥
One of those rare videos I didn’t skip forward once.
23:45 "this is....tHISUSSS" 😂😂😂😂😂
This is the best interview I’ve listened to in a while! Extraordinarily interesting interviewee with great question asking! Great job fellas! JJ! You’re the man!

JJ had his own dream on MLK day 😂
Send'n Terrific Tuesday Vibes Y'all Way💣🖤💣
Damn JJ’s parents sound like mine in the 80’s. Cereal servings in glad bags and don’t even ask about getting sneaker over $50 once a year 🤯🤯😂😂😂😂
This was very introspective, we learned about him…..well he taught us in a sense
This guy dont beat around nothing very detail speaks with a silent confidence. I think he can be a great coach.
Love the Pod. You guys doing such an amazing job. salute.
I love JJ... Always so impressive. He is going to do greater things... blessings.
GREAT interview! They covered a lot of ground on a variety of topics, that makes a good interview (in my book). Was glad to hear RC ask about Adam Morrison! They didn't really talk too much about him, but I wish there was more talk about JJ's Senior year and the comparison to Adam.
One of the best podcasts you guys have done JJ what a legend !
This was very eye opening. Great interview. Always knew & heard about JJ but learned a lot.
Probably one of my favorite episodes
SHOTS FIRED by RC
I fucken love the chemistry, the banter, the layers of sarcasm - best poddy I've seen in a while.
JJ real dude to me...he got my respect, his honesty is something, I can identify with. great interview POV.
Great interview and JJ is a real one.. The Pivot is the best podcast out..
This was a really good episode. JJ is that guy if you ever wanna listen to someone talk basketball go listen to him
As a longtime hater of JRED AND DUKE I just wanna say i have a new found respect for this guy watching this!!Thanks guys for this one!!But I’ll forever hate Laettner 🤷🏽♂️😂😂😂😂😂
So I knew he was complicated but I can appreciate his complexity his transparency is refreshing
What an incredible episode! 👏
I truly and absolutely loved how JJ Redick G-CHECKED Chris Mad Dog Russo on national television on his "Just Shut Up And Play" comment while on First Take a few years ago.
Jj is a solid dude he’s turning into the goat of podcast former players!
JJ gained a new fan and I NEVER thought I’d say that about a Dookie. JJ is a man of empathy and integrity
I remember my dad and others would tease me for always wanting a Duke JJ Redick jersey when I was younger. Post nba career has been well off to a great start so far. 🔥🔥interview too by the pivot pod
"you think you're better than me award" It does not take very much to be better than bill simmons.
Greetings & love from Louisiana fellas!🥰 Way to represent RC w/ the Dawn Staley hoodie. Love it! Great work and interview as always!
JJ will be a NBA coach one day. Loved his story and insight of the game. Excellent episode Pivot crew!
Much respect to JJ, great interview as always 💯💯
You guys are the best. I love this show. I want to be a better human being - because of this show. Thank you.
Great interview one of the best ones love JJ
JJ will be a head coach real soon .... I want to say he is the next (Legendary NBA coach when he's ready but no pressure(!!! But his experiences have groomed him to be so!! My Pivot bruhs keep climbing, yall are the standard now !!!
Mention the Roanoke Jaguars vs Danville Warriors Battles! As well as Cave Springs vs George Washington Highscool Danville, VA. Guaranteed he remembers
I played against your AAU team in the 2000s nationals with Randolph. Twice in college. Cool, seeing you now and how you elevated.
I’m glad someone finally addressed LeBron always saying “yep” in their podcast
Big JJ fan, Great interview Pivot crew.
I see JJ in an entirely different light.. “J Red”😂😂😂 great ep fellas🙌🏾
Once again RC has a 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥hoodie. Props to Dawn Staley and whoever made it.
Not gonna lie … as a kid I hated and still hate Duke and watching JJ killing all these teams back then used to drive me crazy but this JJ now after basketball he’s a great personality and I enjoy watching his shows … So much respect to the dude
Every episode is 🔥🔥🔥
JJ is everywhere rn. Kudos.
The Frat story is THE BEST!
Great interview. Really enjoyed listing to JJ.
Was at Duke after JJ. He is an ICON for all Devils because we loved to be hated. Grew up a UNC fan but Grant Hill and a scholarship to play there changed all of that for me. J Will and JJ are the reasons most hate us after the Laettner years and we love the fact that he's shown who we really are. That most of the Duke crowd is plain jane and from humble beginnings but those 4 letters change everything for those of us who didn't have.
Damn freddy T, 20 lbs in 2 y ears. My man eating too good 🤣
JJ Redick needs him a championship now and he is a certified sharpshooter
Jj funny asf with his staring faces lol like u know it's funny
Same dunk white brindle tilt free “Luck said something”
Damn. JJ on like 5 podcasts in the last week this dude is really about to be the Hornets or Lakers head coach huh
Orlando native…we used to love bruh shooting axx when we were jits, my lil cousin used to call em Red-Dxxk on 2K bih. Good times 🤣🤣🤣
Best episode yet!
Put God first and keep it moving great show for sports and life nothing good to say or be silent.
Love hearing about how people were raised.
The fact that you knew 5/6 in your head is amazing LOL
I founded more respect for J.J. after this.. Now, I can use this to understand why he is so driven.
Mad respect for JJ
