Navigation Plotting is an essential skill for working in the maritime industry. This video is an introduction to some of those concepts. If you've spent lots of time on the water, but have not pursued a professional license, you should consider yourself a candidate for an Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels (OUPV) 6-Pack license. This license allows you to charter vessels with up to 6 paying passenger and is the first step to a career in the maritime industry, full-time or part-time!

    • No doubt! I bought a navigation class that is cryptic and very unnecessarily confusing. There is info omitted too. It awful! Im going o sign up with NMI to take my USCG 6 pack course. Its never enough to know the stuff. The best instructors speak the language of the beginner and therin lies the brilliance! I wish ebery teacher i had in 10 years of college and grad school was as good as this gentleman.

  • Plus the running fix can be used with only one point of reference on the land.

    • It is easy, you just do it a few times and then you know how it works. Its like riding a bicycle.

  • Clearly explained! The only thing I'd like to see is the math behind this. It seems that moving over the first bearing line creates some sort of parallelogram and it's properties are relied on to say "Where the first bearing line crosses the second is the Fix."

  • Great example and explanation! BUT the problem with a running fix is that boat speed - especially with a boat doing only 4kts is never constant. It will be affected greatly by set & drift of the current as well as any chop...

  • At about 3:24, the instructor says something like “obviously there we can figure out set and drift.” The first time I watched this, I assumed that set and drift could be figured from the difference between the assumed second location and the running fix determined second location. However, that is not the case. To accurately perform a running fix, the set and drift must be known. Is the instructor referring to other, independent methods for estimating set and drift?

  • Capt. This could also be done by using only 1 object or landmark as a reference point, right?

    @turcenoarthurjamil4364@turcenoarthurjamil43642 жыл бұрын
  • Forgive me for asking what may seem a silly question, if you are able to identify a landmark on the map as being the one you are looking at taking a bearing off of, is it necessary to take one at all as you know that you are at that location? I would guess there is more to it than what I think there is so any information is greatly appreciated.

    • If you didn't take a bearing, then you couldn't plot a position line on the chart to then get a fix on your position. The whole purpose of taking a bearing is to accurately determine your position on a nautical chart with regards to navigational hazards, depth of water etc, and then perhaps estimate your position in the next hour, using known tide/current and wind. You could be heading a certain direction that looks O.K, but your Course Over Ground could be set way off due to the afore mentioned wind and current, and then possibly go aground on a sandbank for example.

  • The following problem came in the authority test in Latakia port in Syria: A ship steering 235° gyro, Speed 15 kn, gyro error= 2° low Under effect of bothe northerly wind , causing leeway 7°, and a current , set 185° and rate 3kn. At 1600 , Dungeness light house distance off by Radar 8 miles. At 1640 , Royal Sovereign light house distance off 11 miles. Fix the position at 1600 & 1640? Can you please , kind Sir, show us how to solve this sailing problem?! Thank you in advance
