"You live a new life for every new language you speak. We have only one chance of living on this Earth but if we never stop learning new languages we can live more than just one life." - You made me cry with this quote. Thanks for this more-than-inspiring video. I think it's time for me to learn Chinese again and then other languages that I'm fond of. Thank you!
Now that is a beautiful comment that makes me feel that all my effort in sharing in my videos is definitely worthwhile. As for Chinese 加油... let me know how it goes. I plan to make a video about how if you know one of the 漢字文化圏 (Vòng văn hóa chữ Hán) helps with learning the others>>>> I look forward to more of your comments.

So happy I was recommended this video! I'm a native English speaker and have been a language enthusiast since I was a kid. I currently speak Japanese (B2, but used to be C1 many a year ago), Spanish (B2), Swedish (B1), a bit of Georgian, and have dipped my toes in many others ( As of now I've dabbled and learned some basics of Bulgarian, Zulu, Welsh, Scottish Gaelic, Russian, Turkish, Arabic, German, Hindi... I'm sure I'm forgetting a few). It's been such an obsession of mine and it fills me with so much joy. I can't seem to stop getting excited about picking up more languages and having my mind opened to whole new worlds and ways of understanding and looking at the world. I'm also fascinated with dead, indigenous, and endangered languages. I'd love to study Old English/Anglo Saxon seriously one day as it's appealed to me for many years. I also find conlangs extremely interesting as well, and have been working on one of my own! Oh if we only had infinite time to pursue everything we loved... I'm curious, are there any languages that you just don't really like that much? Ones that you have no interest in learning (as of now) or ones that you simply don't like the sound of? Also, have you ever studied Georgian? It's hard to find polyglots who tackle this beautiful language. I used to live in Georgia and fell in love with the country, culture, and language and hope to become much more proficient in the future. Sorry for my rambling comment, but I got a bit excited. Looking forward to watching more of your videos! ❤
I love that spirit... isn't it a joy to learn and use new languages...
Very inspirational, it's amazing what you achieved! The road of languages truly never ends!

Thank you for your tips, I’m learning 3rd language so this is very useful for me. From Vietnam with love 🫶 🇻🇳
You're so welcome! I love so many things about Vietnam, the food, the people, the culture, and of course the language.
My first foreign language i was forced to learn german. I am comfortable in speaking german, and can understand when someone speaks fast. After that i started learning Spanish, 3 months later i can have not so fluent but long conversations with spanish speakers. after 6 months or more i will hop on to portuguese while still learning spanish. I cannot express how joyful it is to learn new language. How i learn spanish is simple. I am busy person, so i walk to work everyday and listen to audio course on spanish. This way i get my both physical and mental workout

Enjoy your language learning process 1. learn by topic: for example you like to travel: watch many videos, learn vocabulary about travel and then you have enough data in your brain to talk about travel 2. Practice listening Start with simple things and have translations to help your brain get used to the new language

Thanks for this great clip. As a language nerd, I am currently learning the 4th in my early 30 years old. All related things you said in this vdo are true and I also confirm it. Now, it seems much more easier and convenient to access any languages sources for learning. Anyway, patience practice and consistency are always required to achieve something big. Learning a language is a path without ending because it is indeed a new life and a new way of seeing life through that language, through that culture. In brief, you get new eyes to see the same world. I agree with all the thoughts you share in the video, and of course there are still more things to say about the topic; things that also have to do with learning processes that improve every day you are learning new things. Every time I get into the classroom, a new professor is sharing new discovering with students. So, this way I also try to see my new group of students because they are also new plants with sparkling new flowers and leaves. Life is poetry, and languages are the dancing music around every poem that you share. A warm hug for those who are pursuing this path. My native language is Spanish, by the way.
Thank you for sharing that. It is beautifully written.
I totally agree with his idea because I myself have the same experience. I once learnt Japanese but had to quit then I learn Mandarin, then Cantonese, then Korean, after almost 10 years, I got back with Japanese and it's much more manageble.

Well, it's nice to hear that I've been using some of the same techniques as someone who speaks 30 languages! I have a movie in each of the six languages I speak, that I can recite without the movie even playing, and I'm certain is has helped me with comprehension and my pronunciation. "Patience and practice" is definitely my mantra! Thanks for the video😎
Thanks for sharing! I am very pleased to know you've also had success with those methods.
That's a good idea .I'm gonna using it in my process to learning Another languages
I have 50+ languages on my list of languages I want to learn and improve, and am currently learning 15+ languages, including the prettiest languages Icelandic + Norse / Dutch / Norwegian that are as pretty as English, so I highly recommend learning these magical languages as they’re just too pretty not to know! Luckily I learned Spanish in childhood in a 100% passive way, and this may be one of the reasons why I find language learning super easy, tho it’s also the fact that knowing both English and Spanish is a huge advantage as well as the fact that I always choose the pretty languages with mostly or almost only pretty words which are naturally motivating and bring true joy to the eye and ear! I started learning languages on my own about one year ago, and I got to an advanced level in Dutch after only focusing on it for about 3 or 4 months, as Modern Dutch is the language that’s closest to Modern English, and it is the easiest language ever, after English that’s is the easiest language in every way, and the Nordic languages and the Norse languages are also super easy to learn, as all Germanic languages are category 1 + category 2 languages with almost only pretty words that are naturally very memorable and the most organized aspect, and almost all the languages on my list are category 1 languages and category 2 languages, except for Irish & Scottish Gaelic which are category 3 languages, so my learning process is very enjoyable! It’s all going real smoothly, as I am using the best learning techniques, such as spaced repetition (watching many vocab videos with hundreds and thousands of words as well as all sorts of videos on grammar and prepositions / verbs / conjunctions and pronunciation etc, multiple times, times over a period of time, until I can instantly process and remember / use automatically every word) and memorizing many lyrics and watching all videos with subs in the target languages etc! I highly recommend learning the prettiest languages ever created Dutch and Icelandic + Norse and Norwegian, which are as pretty / refined / poetic as English, and also Welsh / Breton etc and Galician and Hungarian and Slovene etc, and any other Germanic language and modern Celtic language, as they are all gorgeous!
By the way, my current levels are... - intermediate level in Old Norse / Icelandic / Welsh - writer level in English + native speaker level in Spanish - upper advanced level in Dutch + advanced level in Norwegian - mid intermediate level in German / Swedish / Portuguese / French / Italian - beginner level in Breton / Hungarian / Gothic / Latin / Faroese / Galician / Danish / Slovene - total beginner in Cornish / Manx / Irish / Scottish Gaelic / Aranese / Elfdalian / Gallo / Limburgish / Occitan / Luxembourgish / Catalan / East Norse / Ripuarian / Swiss German / Alemanic / Austrian German / PlatDeitsch / Greenlandic Norse / Friulian / Pretarolo / Sardinian / Neapolitan / Sicilian / Venetian / Esperanto / Walloon / Ladin / Guernsey / Norn / Burgundian / West Frisian / North Frisian / East Frisian / Finnish / Latvian / Estonian etc (and the other languages based on Dutch / German / Norwegian / Italian / French that are referred to as ‘dialects’ but are usually a different language with different spelling etc) (My list isn’t complete tho, as I don’t know the names of some of the extra languages that are based on the standard language yet, but I want to learn all the Germanic languages and the 6 modern Celtic languages and the true Latin languages and a few others, including all the extra languages that are based on the standard language that are usually referred to as dialects, as Norwegian / Italian / Dutch / German / Danish have tons of those extra languages, and I want to learn at least the differently spellt words and the words used with different meanings in each extra language, so that I can at least understand them, but I want to learn each official language / standard language to a native speaker level, and some of them to a writer level!)
Old Norse is one of the prettiest languages I’ve ever seen, it has real gorgeous words like erfiði / yfir / haf / vindr / dyn / skegg / dróttinn / veit / drengr / fjall / hǫnd / fisksins / lengr / hvassir / rauðr / hvarr / grænn / hvat / líkligr / hǫss / afi / frændi / heitir / veð / hráka / þó / kvern / mælti / hét / setja / hinn / kveða / sinn / leið / brott / knerri / við / dýr / með / heyra / eða etc, and the word endings (like nir and inn and sins etc) and the letter combinations are so pretty, just like the word endings and letter combinations in English and Dutch and Norwegian, and Icelandic is very similar, and Faroese also, and Icelandic also has mostly gorgeous words like efne / verða / fer / eyra / nafni / leita / hef / hafið / drekka / líf / dreki / samviska / logn / vindinn / viska / hæna / garðinn / sófn etc - I can’t stop learning new pretty words in Old Norse and Icelandic (and the other pretty languages) and they are really áddìctive to look at and read and hear in lyrics etc, I’ve been listening to Skáld songs in Old Norse and Icelandic since I found the first song in Old Norse (Troll Kalla Mik) and I’ve memorized most of those lyrics!

What a joy. :) I remember when school was going to start forcing us to learn English and I said "that's dumb, we are never going to use it" back in 1996 (I was 10) and thankfully the spark ignited early once I realized that my favorite TV show friends as well as my then favorite group spice girls was speaking/singing in English and soon after the internet boomed so thankfully my interest in English really took off early. After a few years I hit the intermediate plateau and I am SO grateful that learning was obligatory so that quitting wasn't an option because my love for language learning really started after that plateau. I hardcore identified as an English learner for a long time and I worked hard to "perfect" my English and 23 years deep I had to admit to myself that I wasn't really encountering new words to a rate that I could call myself a learner anymore and it was time to start a new language. I wanted a challenge that would keep be occupied for a long time so I chose Korean as my entry to Asian languages and I am so deeply in love with it! I can't wait to learn languages the rest of my life. :) My Korean listening comprehension is probably B1 but my speaking is stuck at A2 yet. I am so stuck on connecting shorter sentences into longer ones and I am hellbent on succeeding to overcome this in a year's time. Swedish is my native language so it will be incredibly fun to see how the joined experience of Korean vocabulary and Swedish pitch accent will be when learning Japanese next.
Fantastic! Learning Korean will help you so much when you start learning Japanese.
Thank you sir. I hope one day I will ...
All the best. Consistency is key.

Thank you very much for this video, it's so inspiring! I'm Italian and I speak English and French fluently (in addition to Italian, of course...). Then many years ago I started studying Hindi but abandoned it after a year for family reasons (young children & work & lack of time and organization..) ... But I was left with the desire and hope to be able to undestand it one day. Now that my children are grown up, I started volunteering at an organization helping the poor... I meet every day lots of people coming from Peru and speak only Spanish, as well as North African immigrants speaking only Arabic. To make it short, I started studying both Spanich (which is quite similar to Italian, actually, and rather easy for me) AND Arabic (which is difficult, but never mind) . But I've been regretting my Hindi so much that I decided to continue with that too. I fear this is "too much", especially as I'm not young anymore (I'm 59) but I hope I can manage to do it. But as I find that many people say learning two languages at the same time is complicated, I guess it's even worse with three...
Thank you so much for sharing. The more we challenge ourselves and use our brains, the stronger we get. You have created a situation in which these languages are meaningful to you. So just do your best and enjoy the journey. I am 67, and there are many languages I continue to study and use.

Indeed a different life CAN be lived through the experience of my three main languages and I love it. By the way as I am from Ireland I also learned Irish at school, but unfortunately I don't have as many oppotunities to use it in real life. However if you are interested in it another unique richness of expression with all kinds of special grammatical points that I haven't seen elsewhere, that could be for you a language journey to pursue in future. Go néirí an bóthar leat agus go raibh an ghaoth go brách ag do chúl . (May the road rise to meet you and the wind be always at your back)
@eoinobeirne9928 as you see from my name, I am of Irish descent and am interested in learning the language... it is just that so many other languages get in the way lol😅... I mean I concentrate on languages I can use in the near future.
I speak English, Spanish and French, and i speak a little bit of italian, portuguese and german but i am really scared of my language skills because of what you said i have no confidence… good video!!!!
The first step is to face the issues that hold you back from gaining the skills you wish to acquire. Celebrate small victories and accomplishments to build up your confidence.
Excellent video , I just want to make a suggestion , if you could do a video about your view on how to learn 2 or more languages at the same time, I'm studying Catalan and Indonesian , well great channel and great content , greetings from Spain.
Thank you. I do mention studying multiple languages at the same time in other videos, but maybe I should focus on that one particular video. Great idea. All the best in your study of Catalan and Indonesian.
@@polyglotdreams thank you for answering , and for your time , muchas gracias , merci beaucoup, merci, terimah kasih.
Kenapa kamu belajar bahasa indonesia? Apakah kamu pernah ke Indonesia? Saya orang indonesia
Thank you
You're welcome. My pleasure. Thank you for your interest and joining us here.
You can speak Bengali language ❤❤ 🇧🇩
Actually I am still quite a novice at Bengali but I am greatly assisted by my knowledge of Nepali and Hindi. it is a beautiful language that I plan to work on more.
I am learning 4 languages: Spanish 🇪🇸, French 🇫🇷, German 🇩🇪 and Tagalog 🇵🇭 I need to go 6 times to equal your 30 languages! L 🤣 L (American English is my mother 👩 language. Add that to 4 modern languages. This yields 5 languages. ) I am not counting dead/classical languages Latin 🇮🇹, Biblical/Ancient Greek 🇬🇷 or Biblucal Hebrew ✡. Good episode.
That is an interesting set of languages? Why did you choose Tagalog too?
In terms of linguistics, some words in Tagalog have cognate in Malay or Indonesian. Just a few changes in consonants make the difference. Other words have different spelling. Example. Filipinos have lumping. Malaysians and Indonesians have loompya. I traveled to Singapore 🇸🇬 early this year, 2023. I am a singer and multi instrumentalist who is from San Francisco 🌉. A good blend of Asian 🌏 and Latino communities here. I listen to and play or sing music from around the world 🌎. Regine Velazquez her birthsake Jaya Mitchell and Lea Salonga got me interested in OPM (Original Philippine Music) back in the late 1980s to early 1990s. I reduced my listening of OPM until Winter 2019. Morissette Amon blew me away! 🤯 I have not been excited about a power 🔋 house 🏠 singer since Mariah Carey! 🤯🤯 Then, I heard Klarisse de Guzman, Elaine Duran and Katrina Velarde. Blown again! 🤯 Then 11 year old Elha Nympha winning 2015 The Voice Kids Philippines 🇵🇭 singing whistle notes to win the finals! 🏆 Blown away!🤯 I asked singing coaches of different ethnicities. They all said that The Philippines 🇵🇭 has great singers. I traveled there too. I have relatives who were stationed at Subic and Clark then. I saw them there when I was a young boy 👦. My recent trip was last year, 2022. Even the Filipinos there say the mentioned singers are the real deal. Filipinos sing from cradle to grave. German is to Western singing as Tagalog is to Eastern singing. (I do like The Scorpions 🦂 and German opera.) Singing in Tagalog helps my singing in the other languages too! 😃 Blown away from that observation! 🤯 After I master the intermediate level of Tagalog, I will learn Tamil or Indonesian/Malay. Some Tamil words appear in Tagalog and in Indonesian/Malay.
Wow! Tagalog?! Your only problem will be the grammar, pronounciation and vocabulary.
@@apoy4630Yes 👍 Within the vocabulary are 2 problems: 1 prepositions and, drum 🥁 roll , slang. Those are the 2 which held me back in my other languages, for a while.
thank you
You're welcome
I'm 51. at present learning 13 languages.
Fantastic... which languages?
Russia, German, French, Italy, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Hindi, Greek, Swali, Latin@@polyglotdreams
I've purchased and read your memoir, it's a wonderful book which keeps me motivated in learning Japanese, I am 17 currently and I am fluent in 5 languages (English, marathi, Hindi, bengali and Urdu) basically when I got to know Marathi it was easy for me to learn hindi because of same script and structure, then I went for bengali, there were language similarities too, I managed to learn the script and I got to know on how to read and write bengali, then I jumped for urdu because it was very similar to hindi and with just the difference of script, I struggled a lot on learning the script especially the pronunciation of words like ع, eventually I managed to grasp the script, because of urdu I unlocked a new language base, which is Farsi and Pashto, my plans are of learning Farsi and pashto and then to leave the indo-european languages to Semitic languages, most languages are interlinked one way or other, this factor really helped me to master 5 languages (exception being English I learned it at school).
Thank you so much for sharing your language-learning journey, and I'm thrilled to hear that my memoir has been a source of motivation for you in learning Japanese. It's truly impressive that you've achieved fluency in five languages at the age of 17! Your approach of building on language similarities, especially within the Indo-European language family, is a smart and efficient way to learn multiple languages. It's fascinating to see how your knowledge of one language became a stepping stone for the next, creating a language base that allowed you to explore even more linguistic diversity. Learning the scripts and nuances of languages like Bengali, Urdu, Farsi, and Pashto, despite their differences, showcases your dedication and linguistic adaptability. It's inspiring to see your plans to transition from Indo-European to Semitic languages, recognizing the interconnectedness of languages and building on that foundation. Your journey exemplifies the richness of language learning and the interconnected nature of diverse linguistic systems. Keep up the fantastic work, and I wish you continued success in your language-learning endeavors. If you ever have questions or want to share more about your language-learning experiences, feel free to do so!
If you wish to leave behind the Indo-European languages, I'm curious that you don't want to learn any of the Dravidian languages. I'm sure there will be more opportunities for you to use them than Arabic or Hebrew.
@@kingbolo4579 yes, it's actually a good idea, I will definitely think of it, there are some hurdles to it like most Dravidian languages aren't intelligible, but i will do my best to learn some of it.
@@Nagvanshieus My sincere good luck to you if you try to pick up one or more of them. I am trying to learn Tamil. It is not by any means an easy road, like you say there are significant hurdles, but it is fascinating.

Amazing! เห็นด้วยและมีประโยชน์มากค่ะ I'm a Thai tutor and a language learner so I couldn't agree more with all of these useful information. ขอบคุณที่แบ่งปันข้อมูลดี ๆ นะคะ 🙏 🙏
thank you so much 💓 ฉันรักภาษาและวัฒนธรรมไทย
I love thai language but I find it little difficult because I have zero guidance 😢😢but I wanna learn it 😞
Get to know basic phrases to start with then do the tones practice will help you a lot. Then if you're serious learn Thai alphabets as well as listen as much as you can to get the gist of the tones. And of course practice speaking :)) @@avinashwagh1140

Estoy orgulloso porque soy bilingue y tu hablas 30 idiomas 😮
When you were discussing about how you helped teach that Vietnamese girl to fluency you mentioned stories and narration creation. Obviously you mention bilingual stories with audio quite a lot on your channel(which I have started to integrate into my sessions). However I was wondering about some basic tips you have on narration creation.
Perfect timing... that will be part of my next video on developing fluency.
I would love to see another video on more details on the process of learning from movies or TV programs. I know you said you listen to it multiple times, but did you stop a lot at first to look up words, or did you just keep listing until it made sense from context, etc.?
It is most effective if you can read the text (subtitles, closed captions) and study the unfamiliar words. You might even want to make notes on the most interesting vocabulary and phrases.
I needed this… I have hope. Learning mandarin and have been so discouraged. My Chinese friends (from China) tell me I’m doing good. But I get to the point where I’m just able to speak some sentences. It’s only been 1 week but it’s been bad to the point I’m depressed because of disappointment within myself for not having learned quicker each day I set time aside for a few hours.
Hey, don't be so hard on yourself... it is important to enjoy the journey and celebrate small achievements 🎉
@@polyglotdreams thank you man. This really gave me some confidence. I’m starting up again. With a new attitude just as you described 🙏
Great video! I'm native Portuguese speaker. I've started studying English and Spanish, and I want to learn French and Italian as well.
Great 👍 English, Spanish, and French is a great combination
For most potential polyglots the biggest barrier is money and time. Work takes up so much time and not working isn’t an option.
Yes... that is an important factor
wow as thai, i would say that you speak thai very clear. I can understand without any doubt at all. ขอบคุณครับสำหรับคำแนะนำดีๆ จะเอาไปปรับใช้นะครับ
ขอบคุณมาก. ฉันมักจะพูดเสมอว่าชาติที่แล้วฉันเป็นคนไทย

Hi Tim how are you? My name is Jonathas, I'm from Brazil and my native language is Portuguese, but I learned Spanish because my stepmom is Uruguayan and English and Russian I learned by myself and I'm studying to be an English teacher. I really love learning new languages, I was learning French and German but I took a break, I'll be resuming very soon learning them, I also want to learn other languages in the future like Italian, Dutch, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Indonesian, Arabic, Polish, Serbian, Ukrainian and maybe Chinese, Japanese and Korean. I found out your channel from Wouter Corduwener. You're such an inspiration.
Thank you Jonathas... it is a pleasure to meet you. The fact that you really love languages is what will help you reach your goals. All the best, and stay in touch.
thank you for your sharing. it's given me a lot of inspiration to learn other languages. I am an Indonesian native speaker, but I now study in Taiwan. I'd like to know the best material for beginners to study Mandarin Taiwanese. Thank you!
