  • The weapon system feel like a step down from Newvegas, wish they do more powerful weapon and ammo as you level up rather than just a better version of the assault rifle called "assault rifle ultra"

    • I felt that way about most parts of the game. It was all good, all fun, but every piece of the game was just kinda shallow. Mods are limited, weapon variety sucks, quests rarely effect the world, and the overworlds never have interesting locations to explore outside of the 1 or 2 per world made for quests. Fun but shallow as a small pond. Not worth more than 2 playthroughs at best imo.

    • The perk system is also really lacking. New vegas and 3 had some genuinely unique and interesting perks. Mr sandman, cannibal, mysterious stranger. They all add to your build and furthered your ability to roleplay aswell as add interesting gameplay mechanics. Outerworlds are just a bit boring and are simply 20% faster movement here. Or 15% better crits there. Game is good but It definitely dosen't come close to being what fallout new vegas was.

I think the main issue with it is how easy the combat becomes and you quickly overpower each enemy you go against. • I thought the game was "ok". The pros were that the story for the most part was good. A lot of the characters have that great Obsidian dialogue that will get you pretty into it. My main gripes were the skill tree, especially with the companions, the choices are all the same for all of them except 3. The ending was pretty weak, and realistically there's only 1 choice unless your characters a brain dead idiot that can't see further ahead. The weapon system was pretty rushed, there's like 6 weapons and 4 armor set models that get recycled with mk2 versions of the weapon and "gold" versions of the armor. There's a couple unique/science weapons but they're weak outside of the hammer. You're also constantly jumping back and forth planets that you've previously visited for turn-ins and random quests that show up later on. I wish it was more like Mass Effect where you only visit a planet once for the most part by making it memorable and unique, bang out all of the quests, and head back to your quest hub (ship). Don't expect New Vegas or Mass Effect 2 quality out of it, and you'll enjoy it.

The main criticism I have is even though there is a decent amount of space to explore, the maps always feel too small. • LOL Yeah, "gameplay feels like a game from 10 years ago" is really a point in its favor! Still, TOW feels as watered down as any modern game. It's hardly a cheap cashin like most modern schlock and like gman says it's a solid foundation, but when comparing it to NewVeg - and everyone's gonna naturally compare it to NV - it doesn't hold up. It's alright, but I still expected better from Obsidian for both gameplay and writing, and TOW is not their best offering in either category.

The dialogue and choices really had me loving the game for the first half of the game then the bland combat, almost pointless loot, and later quests/choices beginning to show flaws had me just wanting to get done with the game. I had somewhere around 7k heavy ammo and 200 medical items at the end of the game seeing as how 90% of the loot is ammo, consumables you wont use, and a actual fuck ton of mods that barely do anything. On the last mission I respected into melee science and max leveled the science hammer just to spice things up. Still, I imagine if I just explored less and played on hard I would've had alot less frustrations so I think the game deserves a good 7 or 8/10 imo. Just had to vent a bit here since most reviewers seem to have not finished the game or fully explored to see flaws in the game.

Combat has very little variance and all the different consumables feel rather weak compared to Fallout’s Psycho, Jet, Mentats etc. especially because they all mostly do the same thing but just with different names and icons. I also didn’t have much to spend my bits on except for adreno, so I currently have like 120~ Adreno and no encounter to use it in because I have a Hunting Rifle Ultra which just lets me one-shot most enemies before combat even starts. The game has good dialogue but I feel like the game is rather disappointing overall, and it also doesn’t help that companions are terrible, I’ve given them good armor and weapons and they almost always die within the first 4-5 seconds of a fight, unlike fallout where if your companions have proper gear they can carry encounters basically

  • I havent actually played NV for more than a few hours. By the time it came out, I had already 100% Fallout 3 with like 900 hours in and was so over the formula that even though I knew NV was a better game, I couldn't bring myself to play it. Finally tried it a few years ago but it doesn't hold up enough to keep my interest, so I'm really glad these guys came out with what is basically the spiritual successor.

  • Just beat the game and here are a few things they could do to make it more interesting: 1. Reduce the number of items you can acquire. I was constantly flush with bits, consumables, weapons, ammo and armor. Ruined the challenge of monitoring your inventory and be cautious of what you used. 2. Eliminate the "bullet time." I used that maybe a handful of times starting out, but then never used it again. Replace it with a paused overlay of the enemy briefly and attack accordingly based on the read out. No slow motion. 3. Skill trees that aren't convoluted. I'm sure they wanted to stand out, but unique doesn't mean more stream lined. Half the time, I was just ditching my points into random shit because it didn't seem to matter anymore. 4. Good/Bad scale on companions. Piss them off too much, they leave. Make them happy, they'll tell you more about themselves and unlock quests. 5. There is only one sort of boss fight and it is a joke. Add more mini-bosses to keep things consistent rather than wait until the end and fight a greater enemy.

  • Very useful review. The way some of the other reviews talk, it sounds like this is perfectly blending old and new RPG elements in the sort of way that implies you can just... do whatever, it's open, and just *insert better than bethesda rant here*. ...but I do kinda expect it has more issues than some want to cover. Forced stealth jobs, easy skill level, and not even romance options, is not a deal breaker, but clearly showing its a tad more modern and compromising than some make it seem. But its also clear this is still a good game with some replay value, choices, and so on going for it.

Or if they just stopped playing before finishing Emerald Vale, because that's when the game takes a dip in quality. (and I hear this is when the original writers left too)

  • This game brings back so much that makes a good game good. In the case of “New Vegas,’’ it wasn’t the combat that made it so good. It was the story and reading terminals that livened up the world. I love sitting there in my bed, reading some deep lore. My battle skills are not even great but having those good dialogue skills make it worth it. As for it being more combat driven at the end, that has to do with the design. All DLCs for shooter/rpgs are the same. It gets more combat driven at the end to justify combat driven characters. But if you’re a more dialogue person, you can still work through it.
