Active police K9 handlers are usually at the tip of the spear when it comes to dealing with the toughest calls. I sat down with Kyle Shoberg, who’s spent 14 years as a police officer - and half of that as a handler. We get in to the difficulties of policing in such a polarized political climate and also numerous shootouts he’s been in during his tenure.

  • One of the best parts about having K9 handlers on the podcast is how the bite stories always make Ritland giggle like a school girl, followed by "thats fn awesome". Love it.

  • *_I retired from NYPD last year & redirected my younger kids who were going to go into the "family business" because nobody has your back these days, despite having a perfect record for 22 years. After retiring long before I had planned, we moved out onto our ranch in OK & the local Sheriff came & introduced himself. What a cool dude, I watched him on TV & he has his guys back. We're in a 2A sanctuary too, thanks to him. So when he offered me a job I took it._*

I wish him luck, because the weight of the world is heavy when he retires. I'm going to look into this therapy he's spoken about. Thanks a million for sharing your vulnerability. Many cops are especially broken upon retirement, this is an important message you're putting out. Much respect to you Mike for this video.

This was the most rational, logical & humorous interview IMO you have ever done. Kyle's assessment of solution oriented change - for the better truly amazed me. Also as an owner of an awesome GS Doggie "Hondo" I should have realized he is a K9 Sergeant - and I have never met a Shepherd lover that I didn't get along with. Well done Sirs!

  • 29 years as a police officer in Washington DC with the Metropolitan Police Department...til retirement in 2019 at the age of 50. No day is the same and one mistake can get you killed. No mistakes can also get you killed. This isn't playstation where you can restart after getting shot or violently stabbed etc...you have one time to get it right. Training is essential but lacking due to the schedules and lack of manpower on the streets. Yes there are numerous officers that should not be in the occupation but somehow they are there. There are no breaks in the game of law enforcement you go from call to call whether it's a baby dead from abuse to a elderly person that's decomposing in her apartment with no family to contact. There is no pause til your shift is over...mostly the interaction with citizens isn't positive because you are there after they have been a victim or they may be the suspect rarely is it positive..so in most cases your the enemy no matter what the outcome is...imagine having a occupation where you are hated by the majority...?...imagine having to search a homeless individual that has defecated and urinated on himself....yep still have to search as though he hasn't miss a weapon and someone dies..or is severely injured...imagine being a call for service away from death on every call...imagine a individual telling you they're not going to jail...imagine fighting the individual to get them into the transport vehicle slippery and sweaty....as you fight with him along with other officers...imagine every fuck up unjustified shooting by a officer you take the heat for it every time you put the uniform on...imagine doing the shit I described and you have to debate with local politicians just to get a raise....for shit no one wants to do or has what it takes to do with lacking support...imagine having the power to take a life and freedom...the most POWER anyone can have to be able to do it...authorized...imagine running toward the threat of gunplay and others are running away....imagine being insensitive to death...or damn near anything based on experience in a occupation that makes you numb...imagine working with no days off....imagine working from 10pm to 6am...only to have to go to court and you get out 5pm...just to be back to work again at 10pm...that night..imagine having no clue what it's like to do it 29 years straight uninterrupted...to retire...in good health...

    • Ya but Rick thinks people with tattoos are all bad guys and it's just nonsensical BS he got stuck in his head. I started watching him and was enjoying it until I started hearing him talking down on people with tats. Any rational thinking adult with a halfway functioning brain would understand that tattoos have absolutely nothing to do with how good or bad a person is.

  • The problem with cops and the good and the bad is we only hear about the bad they don't advertise the good like they should

    • Maybe if the good spoke out against the bad the public perception of them would be better. The media definitely isn’t helping though

  • Great podcast Mr. Ritland! Thank you for all you do for our warrior dogs! Thank you Mr. Shoberg for advocating for Dax so he can live a great life on a 2000 acre farm. I’m sorry to say that I chuckled a bit when learning how you had to let him out of your car and hide behind the door! Almost as funny as $60 and a Big Mac!
