"Why is Elio having Sex with someone that is not Armie Hammer? This is WRONG! " Truth
😣😣😣
… this didn’t age well
i'm laughing so hard, sorry
@@Sporkster007 what's going on with him has nothing to do with the relationships in this movie, though, lol
Or, why is Elio having sex with Armie Hammer?! This is absolutely wrong!
Y'all really obsessed with the fact that he's a straight man enjoying a gay movie, and totally missing all his film analysis. Like those were some well-noticed points and I didn't even take the hints myself, makes me appreciate the filmmaking and art of the movie even more. 💞
Nobody missed the analysis. There are just a lot people who aren't used to seeing people have positive reactions to LGBT things.
Yeah, people say all the time that straight and LGBTQ+ people should be treated the same and that we should not differentiate them, but they always do exactly that! They always put stereotypes on straight dudes, but if you ask them they'll say that they don't like to stereotype people. That's absurd to me. Why do they have to be like "Oh, a straight dude reacting positively to a gay movie"? The people who support LGBTQ+ are the almost always the ones who make it seem like it's not normal for straight people to like gay people. Don't thank him and just accept that it's normal and the rest of the world is going to accept it too. Why do you have to thank him just because the movie is about a two gay guys? I don't get why you are acting like he just donated 10000 dollars to a charity or at methinks. Geez!
@@BlueHat1 Because we're not used to it. Like, maybe you live in West Hollywood, maybe you're only on the part of the Internet where everyone is super liberal anyway, but I'm from a small rural town in Europe and I'm just happy. The people in the comments are happy about his reaction, they're not thanking him, they're expressing their joy at this open and peaceful environment here. Yes, the ideal would be that everybody is treated exactly the same and you don't even have to come out because nobody cares, but we're just not there yet. The legislation that allowed me to marry another woman was passed only two years ago in my country, and you should have heard some of those politicians! How they lower their voices when they say words like "gays and lesbians", how uncomfortable they are with the topic. So no, I'm not gonna pretend that's so normal it's not worth mentioning. It should be, you're right, but it isn't and denying that isn't helping our cause one bit.
i’m sorry i accidentally disliked your comment :(
Elene Kaldani I’m from South Georgia and I can’t even talk about the lgbtq+ community without distorted looks and judgement so graciously thanking someone for acceptance is so important to make others feel comfortable accepting I think it’s wonderful and you should show you enjoy his acceptance not just ignore it

One thing I didn't realize until the second time I watched this movie was with Elio and him answering the phone. He's only on the phone 3 times during the movie: the first it's Marzia and he doesn't recognize her voice, the second time he can't tell if it's his mom or Mafalda who picks up, but the third time he IMMEDIATELY knows it's Oliver on the other line, no question. 🥺

@rose petal exactly what i was thinking 😂
@@laITAebella huh?? the word "gay" is not a dirty word. using the words "gay" or "bi" or "queer" to describe these characters would not indicate any lack of "class" or anything else.
@@LM11116 right?? I'm reading this like why tf do you guys think saying "gay" is bad lol
@@laurapersilva1882 dylan is simply not putting labels and that means class. It's beyond disrespectful to put a label on someone's sexuality if they haven't explicitly said that they're straight, gay, bi, pan, trans etc. They never said that gay was a bad word, they simply said that they were happy that dylan didn't mention the word, since the characters never mention their sexuality or labels.
@@itsmemiaa738 thisss!! Yes. Thank u! I personally don't like labels, but beyond that, I don't like it when people say its a "gay movie", its not because I think its a bad word or something like that, its because they never said that! Even the actors when promoting the movie *always* said its a love story and that love is love. I like both men and women but don't consider myself bisexual or any label, I don't like them, and I wouldn't allow someone to label me and saying it like that's the truth.
The actor who played the dad was amazing with the role, he gave me serious robin Williams vibes tho

Michael Stuhlberg is amazing indeed.
Yeah in good will hunting
Michael Stulhberg is an amazing actor in everything that he has been in. I highly recommend the HBO show 'Boardwalk Empire' where he plays gangster Arnold Rothstein. I think Marzia only forgives him because she realized that Elio had a thing with Oliver. And that he was struggling with his sexuality. Again, just a very subtle thing. Elio and Oliver started spending all of their time together and stopped spending time with the two girls. I'm sure they picked up on what was going on.....and that's why Marzia didn't have to ask why Elio was so sad in their last scene together. She knew why.
Actually, I think the two girls get to fully know it when (after Elio and Oliver go on the bus) Elio's mother invites them both to have lunch with her and Elio's father. I think that is the point when they get to realize everything and kinda learn to be ok with that from his mom... Just another example of the full parent's suport... A little detail that made me like the hole situation even more! It may not be the case tho, just my interpretation of that part :) but I totally agree with the reason why Marzia forgives him!
i think marzia knew the whole time. after the dance scene when marzia and elio when swimming marzia says “are you only with me because you’re mad at chiara?” and elio says “why would i be mad at chiara?” and she says something like “because she likes oliver”
Honestly Marzia was such a team player. I wanted to dislike her for getting in the way of Oliver and Elio but I couldn’t bring myself to. She was so sweet and wanted to still be friends with Elio even after everything that happened between them. She deserved love, even if it wasn’t Elio’s.
I related to Marzia more than I did Elio or Oliver
Virginia Lane Oh she knew somewhat but liked him a lot. Marzia has been close friends with Elio for a long time so she knew him well enough to guess at what was going on. She ended up forgiving him because she realized that he just didn’t like her that way, and she accepted it. She’s still his friend, always will be.
As a bi dude who recently started watching this channel, it made me really happy to see a straight guy getting so hyped over a gay movie. Not being weird about at all and just treating it like any other couple. Not just enjoying the movie but actually being excited about the characters. I dunno, just seeing stuff like this makes it feel more normalised in an environment where I feel alienated at times. Thanks for that, this made me smile.
James you’re one of the best things about this world to some of us 🦋
I am surprised that you are happy about this. I love the content of the movie as well. I feel like a lot of people love a good love story, regardless of gender. Possibly I just surround myself with good people so it is shocking when faced with an ugly point of view.
Like this isn’t what I meant. I guess a more appropriate word would be impressed, shocked, grateful, surprised, thankful... I don’t know. I’m talking out of my ass now.

Enes Üzel well idk, spoiler alert they end up having a divorce
I can't believe you guys are this blind. He was talking about HIMSELF! Elio's father is obviously gay too and that's what made Elio ask him if mom knows. He asked him if she knows that he's bisexual too Notice the way the father looks at photos of greek gods, he adores them! And even Oliver noticed that
Aseel Anza !! Yeah I agree
dylan: *is crying* elio: “does mom know?” dylan: “PffFffTtfFffFf MOM BEEN KNEW” me: *falls off bed*
I think he got the wrong meaning from that one, it's supposed to be a question about the mom knowing that his dad used to close to a man or maybe not....
exactly
Rene nope, if you have read the book then you’ll remember how the dad continued the sentence with “but even if she knew i think her reaction would be pretty much the same” (referring to his reaction to the topic) which already gives away the fact that they were speaking about Elio. They cut that out, i don’t know why tho
When they're talking about mum knowing I think they mean about the dad not being fully in love with the mother and the father possibly being gay.. that's what I thought when I watched the film awhile ago
Niamh Haugh but in the movie they don’t add a small part of the book that specifies the topic that they’re talking about.
Elio: "What your getting married... I suppose?" Oliver: "...I might be getting married next spring" Me: "say sike rn"
There’s a change Oliver finna leave his wife for elio and elio probably has a boyfriend after he forgot about Oliver and after the call

I can't even allow myself to get fully immersed into the story, cause the ending is so sad, and I'm too sensitive (+ depressed).. I heard a sequel is coming, but I can't really imagine it being/ending any happier than this one... I really do wonder what the sequel is gonna be about tho.
@@weaouw it's apparently based in Paris. It follows Elio and Oliver but there is a back story following Elio's father and his past ~lovers~ aka I think we are seeing his father's almost lover gay boyfriend.
@@corinnacarlotti3141 oh woah really..? I took the father's words in the movie as that he was just close to having that intimate of a relationship with someone. Didn't realize he was talking about an actual gay relationship.. But yeah, when it comes to Elio and Oliver I figured it would look into their lives too, but what I've been wondering is if it's just gonna be about them separately. I mean I can't imagine the author bringing them back together again... Even if that would be great.
someone the book is called “find me” and I think it comes out in October or September (?) this year. And I think Andre Aciman is going to bring them back together
When Elio asks his dad, "Does mom know?" He means, "Does mom know [about you]?" His dad had just confided in him that he almost had what Elio and Oliver had, and never found anything like it again. That would include his marriage. Personally, however, I think the mom definitely knew. She was just that strong and gracious and loving of a woman, that she accepted and loved both her men---her husband and her son---for who they were, and cherished them for it.
no he meant does she know ab oliver and elio and the dad was heterosexual but he was talking about a time when he was with a girl he couldve loved but he held back
Yeahh idk I think it was about Elio and Oliver
HickoryDickory86, I agree with your interpretation. It just wouldn't make make sense that the director needs the audience to know what dad knows about mom's perception of Elio and Oliver. 1) We as the audience already know mom knows. 2) What difference does it make for us to know whether dad knows mom knows (or not).
Just to reiterate, mom definitely knew. Her body language later on in the movie shows: when Oliver leaves the breakfast table first, her eyes instinctively peers at Elio. Furthermore, she explicitly asked Elio whether he liked Oliver.
@@avanorby love is love. They arent suggesting the dad is gay but that he never had such a relationship with so much love and connection like Elio and Oliver. Not even with his wife. "Does mom know this." Elio askes about his dads feelings. Yes, because she is a smart strong woman.
Fun fact: they filmed the movie in chronological time so they could feel everything so real, and at the end timothee had a little like AirPod (¿) and he was listening to visions of Gideon
It’s called a Walkman… haha
I feel that when Elio asks: "Does mom know?", he means the deep love he and Oliver felt for each other, something that the dad has picked up on, displayed by his deep monologue, but the mom, throughout the entire movie, views the relationship as a summer fling/ teenage crush rather than fully realizing the extent of her son’s feelings and experiences, so I thought that was a really nice aspect of the movie when the dad says "I don’t think she does."
I honestly thought the dad was telling Elio he was gay too, and that's why he was asking if his mom knew. Like I've only watched it once and that's what I thought and I'm here shocked that no one thinks that too lol
@@eneswk same, I thought his dad was saying how he was in love with another man once and so Ellio was asking if the mom knew that the dad had those feelings
Some stuff in the movie I don’t understand, or at least I didn’t as much the first time, I’m catching on to things more and more when I watch the movie, but that part of him asking if mom knows is the many little stuff I hear throughout the movie that don’t fully understand but I questioned it and thought a lot about it afterwards trying to comprehend, the mom seems aware and accepting of Elio and Oliver but like u said in that summer fling/crush type of way, she’s doesn’t know the full extent of what they’re actually r to each other but the dad seems very aware, the dads iconic talk with his son he’s sounds like he even had sort of the same thing Elio and Oliver had, this movie makes me feel and think so many things it’s crazy
@@eneswk Your interpretation is correct. ELIO asked his dad if his mom knows this heretofore-unknown story of his father's gay past. This revelation shatters the seemingly perfect and open family life they have. But yes, some things are better left unsaid.

I agree that the story jumped too quickly to the winter scene. It would have been intense if we had been given one or two scenes showing Elio normalizing and adjusting to life without Oliver during the fall, autumn colors fading in, beginning to get over the heartbreak... and then to get that phone call and have to relive it all over again. All the same, an outstanding movie, and this was one of the best review and reaction videos for it. Great job.
The problem with that is the family leaves and goes back to the US for the school year and only comes back for Christmas season. The book skips straight to winter, and I don’t think they wanted to establish him at an American school and a whole new location just for a montage.

Richell R. i think oliver said “do you mind?” hoping that elio would stop him. of elio had said “yes, i do mind.” then oliver wouldn’t have married her. it’s a shame that elio didn’t say anything
Who's watching this on 2021 thinking ~cannibalism~
Hi I’m here I just want to know did you cry too as the father held his speech that always hits me hard. first of all because I don’t have a father and second of all my mom does not support or except me and I just want to confirm that I do not need therapy again
I'm so mad at Armie Hammer for ruining this movie for me 🤦♀️
NO. The private life of a supporting actor (Timothee is the lead here) is irrelevant to the appreciation of the movie. Besides which, Armie Hammer may have done many outrageous things, but has never actually eaten human flesh. He merely talked about it, because he's a big talker.

You didn't pick up the dad part. The dad once had his own Call Me By Your Name story but never came close to being with that person.. he kinda meant he settled for the relationship with Elio's mother.. that's what he meant when he asked "does Mom know?" (About that relationship)
Luna S. aaahhhhhhhh
Ya he addressed that near the end of the video
Ohhhhhh yea that makes more sense now
But in the script it says “I don’t think she does” he said meaning if she did she would say the same thing. So i think it was about elio and oliver
i thought so too but the script implies the latter
He really glossed over the whole peach scene AND Elio's dad coming out to him? How???
I don’t think that’s what Elio’s dad meant necessarily…

I think Elio sitting at the train station after Oliver left and eventually calling his mom REALLY got me. It just really hit him there, like, “oh fuck, I’m not alright.”
12:40 It's funny, I never interpreted the "does Mum know?" as Elio asking about him and Oliver, but about that Dad has come close to true love once, and it wasn't with her.
Same, I was so confused when Dylan mentioned Oliver and Elio, like "wait, isn't he talking about his dad never giving himself completely away to another person?"
I went through the entire chat to find this. Exactly my thought!
True, I'm sure he wasn't... Surprised no one told Dylan like higher up, I thought the dad had something with someone he shouldn't have had feelings for.
I join in
@@danielag.medrano8987 He came back around at the end of the vid and mentioned that he realized it I believe. Or rather caught his drift later on when he mentioned how much he loved the dads monologue
“So he said ‘what genre’ and I said ‘timothee chamalet” 😂
What he actually means by “does mom know?” Is that the father had experienced the same thing when he was young. So Elio asks if his mother knew about his father’s “gay” past..
In the books it’s very clear that he is talking about himself :-) but who knows, maybe they changed it up in the movie since they did change up a few characters.
Idk if it's about him being gay, just him being way closer with someone else than his mother.
When Elio was crying at the end during the credits, I couldn’t look away. If I didn’t cry before then I did during the credits. THE CREDITS. he just conveyed so much without any words.

Love seeing a more masculine "presumably straight" guy watch a movie like this instead of a superhero movie or action film. The way he delved into the story and analyzed is so refreshing to see from a younger straight guy. Love the video!! Can't wait to see the movie!!!!
We rip out so much of ourselves to be cured of things faster , that we go bankrupt by the age of thirty. And have less to offer , each time we start with someone new. But to make yourself feel nothing , so as not feel anything. What a waste. 💔 ugh
that was one heavy wisdom i found really hard to take for its relevance
"get that out of there that doesn't belong there, that's a finger" I laughed snorted choked and coughed all at once
The scene where Elio and his dad were talking,I was crying well almost until Elio goes ‘Does mom know?”
Ok in the scene where his dad is comforting him in the end, I think he didn't realise the dad was coming out to his son in a very subtle way. And Elio was asking if mum knew he was gay not Elio himself. Or at least that's what I got from it
miranda correa no in the book elio asked if his mom knew about elio’s sexuality. there is a line that reveals it
@@elysian404 hmmm
No the dad is actually straight because in the second book he gets together with a younger women and falls in love.
What i got from the movie is that his dad is bisexual and he almost had an experience like his son

BE READY FOR THE SEQUEL! and for "beautiful boy", timothee is going to kill that
Annah Niram there's a sequel? (._.)
Annah Niram honestly I’m both excited and anxious about the sequel, I hope they do it justice
Lort yeah there is going to be one
Annah Niram There's gonna be a sequel? Honestly, I liked it as a one time Masterpiece. I hope the sequel lives up to the first one.
Isaiah M. Owens I’m with you and worry about a sequel not being handled properly. The director has said he would like to do a sequel (or even a trilogy), comparing the idea to the before sunrise/sunset/midnight films with Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy. I’m not sure just how serious this idea is though. He said he likes the idea of revisiting the characters in the future at different times in their life and seeing how the events in this film impact and relate to them in this future.. Part of his thinking was he just liked these characters so much (the two leads of course but also the parents and Elio’s female friend) and liked the actors playing them so much it made him sad to think we’d never get to revisit them. I’m not sure how far into the future he is thinking. In the before sunrise films, the films and the story were 9 years apart, so significant time had passed. Part of this idea also stems from the fact that the novel from which this movie is based has a kind of extended epilogue of sorts that hops through several decades and the 2 main characters interactions through the years (book spoiler in case your curious otherwise don’t read ahead... the movie changed the ending a bit from the novel, in the book it’s not a final phone call between Elio and Oliver, instead Oliver comes back to the Villa, taking them up on their offer to come back and visit anytime, I can’t recall how far into the future this visit was, but it’s timing was similar to when the final phone call occurs in the movie. It’s on this visit that Oliver reveals to Elio and the family that he’s getting married. During this visit Elio, who initially is obviously very excited to see Oliver again and resume their relationship where they had left off, becomes bitterly disappointed/devastated when Oliver refuses to have sex with him. It then flashes ahead 15 years and Elio is in the US for some reason and searches out Oliver and shows up at the college where he is now a professor. They meet and Oliver is happy to see him, he invites him to his home for dinner to meet his wife and kids but Elio confesses that he still has feelings for him and is jealous of his new family so couldn’t go and meet them in person. They subsequently go to a bar, Oliver reveals that he’s been following Elio’s academic career and shows him that he still keeps a postcard he’d gotten from Elio that first summer. Oliver also says how he’s worried Elio has “never forgiven” him for not sleeping with him on that Christmas time trip back to Elio’s family home. Finally the last of these looks at events that occurred in the years after the initial story, takes place 20 years after the summer they met, so I guess 5 years after that meeting in the US and Oliver comes back to Italy and visits Elio for a night at his family’s villa. The book then ends as they remanence on their summer together, Oliver says he’s like Elio, he “remembers everything.” Elio then thinks to himself how he wishes to tell Oliver if he truly remembers everything and is truly like him then tomorrow when he leaves, after he’s said his goodbyes to everyone but him, just before closing the taxi door he’ll look me in the eye, hold my gaze and call me by your name.). Not sure those events from the book would work so great in a movie though, for one, Oliver and Elio never have a physical relationship again, even when they see each other, I feel like they’d have to change this a bit to add more story to make it into a full length film or just scrap the books telling of their future encounters and develop a new story.
Is anyone watching this in quarantine and thinking the good old times when you could get a haircut
Does Mom know...he's talking about his dad's past...
“He schedules Marzia” 💀
I was really drunk when I watched this movie and I was expecting it to be a nice summer romance so I sobbed relentlessly through the end of the movie and then got incredibly angry because the ending made me sad. Also when Oliver said he was getting married I literally shrieked
I like that Elio is kind of unsure and obscure in the movie and it goes unexplained (e.g. 8:48), because it gives us that same empty feeling of not knowing exactly where you are and where to go from here. he's sort of skipping stones and even though he's bold he's also wavering and it causes him to hurt people and miss opportunities, and in my opinion that gives the film and the love story told so much character and honesty, because it showcases the fragility in understanding our emotions and acting upon them
When he says "does mom know?" I always thought the question was directed to his dad about the mom and dad's relationship.
That speech from his dad changed my life. Like, literally it changed my way of handling relationships. This book and movie are so touching and I cry even watching just your video lol. There are rumours that there's gonna be a sequel and I hope Luca (the director) gives them a good resolution because the book doesn't and that left a hole in my soul. I love everything about this story ;;___;;
