About a year ago Larry Vickers and James Rupley published the first volume of a series on H&K firearms, beginning with handguns. After some extensive additional photography (part of which I was happy to be able to help out with), they have now released H&K Volume II, covering submachine guns and PDWs. That is to say, the MP5 and MP7 families, along with programs like SMG I, SMG II, SMG 2000, HK50, and HK54A1. They are joined by James Williamson of Teufelshund Tactical as a collaborating author, who brings a tremendous amount of knowledge on the subject.
Where Volume I had a really substantial amount of background text information, Volume II cuts that back a little bit while expanding the photography by nearly 150 additional pages. This is without a doubt the most comprehensive photographic work on the subject ever done, at 550 pages long. The MP5 is the largest section for obvious reasons, and it begins with the earliest surviving prototypes and continues through the most recent product improvements. In between, we see things like the early tactical light systems, the different covert briefcases, cutaways, and more. While I wish there was a bit more historical reference data on some of the less common variations, it's still the best resource currently available on the topic.

One that I missed the boat on was 1990's I found SVT40's cheap enough to buy 2 for a little under $500 with tax and everything. Could have bought more but didn't. Now I see them on gunbroker selling for $2k and up. I guess everyone saw the one in the movie Sniper and wants them. They are another very solid shooter and fun to take out now and then.

  • In the summer of 1983, a friend was interning at HK’s DC facility. One of her coworkers leaving work for the day had words with another driver in a pickup. The pickup driver took offense and started to tail the coworker. Recalling HK’s facility has a security fence, he drove back to work tailed by the pickup. Their gate had remote control, which he opened as he approached. The pickup accelerated and got thru the gate before it closed. The coworker got out, the pickup driver got out. The coworker told the pursuer he was trespassing on private property. The pickup driver advanced on the HK employee, pulling a knife. The employee reached into his vehicle and brandished one of HK’s fine products. The pursuer continued to advance, so the employee sprayed the asphalt at the feet of the hot head, who was not deterred. HK then proved its efficacy as a PDW.

    • With exeption of the few owners of a Waffenschein ( german 'CCW licence), german hunters (who are allowed to carry a pistol for Fangschuß/ final shot during hunting), and target shooters using central fire pistols in combat pistol look for competition, H&K has nothing to offer for german civilians, owning an ordinary gun licence ( Waffenbesitzkarte). No hunting guns, no rifles or pistols for traditional german target shooters. But in Oberndorf am Neckar, there is also Feinwerkbau company, which produces only airguns and .22 guns for traditional olympic target shooters. Mauser produces still hunting guns, but no more at Oberndorf, but in a small town Isny , where also Sauer and Blaser hunting guns are produced. In Oberndorf, in socalled Schwedenbau ( Swedisch Building), once owned by Mauser company, there is the Waffenmuseum ( weapons museum). There are weapons, produced by Mauser, H&K, Feinwerkbau and Königlich Württembergische Waffenmanufaktur ( which later became Mauser). For the reason that Mauser collection was in 1945 stolen by US and French troops, the shown Mauser guns are not from former collection and in bad condition. There are also civilian products of Mauser ( socalled bureau machines and measurement instruments, but also a Mauser car). With entry Ticket , you can also visit Heimatmuseum ( homeregion museum with an Intressting collection of allemanic swordblades and spear tips).

    • They did for the FBI MP5/10...

      @ForgottenWeapons@ForgottenWeaponsАй бұрын
    • HK didn't think it was necessary (in longarms, most of the guns that had automatic bolt hold open were derived from.clip loading guns, and almost no SMGs had the featyre) and would unnecessarily complicate gun (I know, German engineers worrying about complexity 😂 ), most of their customers agreed, and later retrofitting it into the mechanism would have required new magazines and receivers when they already had a very popular design that was selling all they could make. Also, the CETME all of the HK roller delayed long guns were derived from (and the StG45 the CETME was derived from) didn't have it. Now, when enough money was on the line (the FBI saying, "We'd love a 10mm MP5, but we insist on a bolt hold open... Colt is willing to accommodate us with an AR15 SMG...", or HK hoping to land a "NATO de facto standard rifle" winner and developed the G41 just as the the NATO ammo trials looked set on 5.56, or even earlier when trying to sell the HK21 to the US Army), HK was more than willing to oblige.
