My Honest Opinion | In today's video, I'll share with you my thoughts on a comment we received recently talking about the Spanish I speak in my videos isn't "neutral" enough. I explain why I don't care about Neutral Spanish as much as someone may think a teacher should.

This video was beautiful!!! As the son of a Puerto Rican and Colombian immigrant, I spent most my life teaching my parents English and pushed away my Latin roots because of the environment around me. Now being an adult, I just want to slap that little kid that didn’t want to Spanish because the white kids made fun of him!! It’s a shame but I’ve become more motivated than ever to sharpen my Spanish as only 3% of medical doctors can speak the language. There is no worse feeling than someone looking at you for help and expecting to be understood, but you can’t communicate how you need to. I still struggle and it ain’t perfect, but I’ve never been met with anything but positive response from Spanish patients. They are so grateful and relieved that someone, anyone, is actually trying to listen to them in their native tongue. It’s a different connection. So I thought you should know that your videos (through teaching me) are actually helping prevent, treat, and help thousands of Latinos that unfortunately wouldn’t have gotten the care they deserved otherwise. Because of my roots, my Spanish is a constant blend between PR and Medellin. It’s unique to me and many people ask about it all the time. And because of their questions, I meet new friends and learn their stories which motivate me even more at the end of the day. Your video did a fantastic job of explaining why. Rocky, it’s a shame that someone had the nerve to write that to you. Neutral is nice but, like you said culture is a key component. Every Spanish speaking country speaks their own way and that’s the best thing about it. You learned Spanish and you did a great job and we all understand you and I’m sure the person who wrote you the letter understands you too and that is what’s important. I am learning so much Spanish from you bro! I am half PR and half white. My Pr dad left when I was young and I didn’t learn Spanish. Now that I’m older I went to visit my family in PR and couldn’t speak to them because there was a language barrier. You don’t understand how much this helps me so thank you !
There are a lot of people who grew up with a parent who speaks another language who never learn that language, so don't put it all on your dad. It's common. The ones who are able to master the language are the ones who have access to communities. Besides, if you actually did manage to learn it from the one person in your life who speaks it, you might only be able to reach a childlike level anyway. Because there are limits to the kinds of conversations parents and their children have. Mastery comes from exposure through community.

Cuando yo estudié español en la universidad pasé un semestre en México y ahí conocí a muchacho que llegó desde Puerto Rico, un americano que aprendió su español completamente en Puerto Rico. Ese “güey” fue el mejor estudiante de la clase y además los mexicanos lo amaban por su manera natural de hablar. Como dijiste antes no importa qué dialecto aprendas, lo más importante es la capacidad de comunicarte y comprender la cultura. Gracias por este video Rocky. Lo tengo guardado en mi playlist de “All time favorites” bajo el final de Casa de Papel así que sabes como es la vaina para mí porque hablaste lo que yo siempre he pensado pero mejor hablado que yo. Personalmente yo mezclo el español del narrador de documentales con lo puertorriqueño y lo mexicano y así es lo más cómodo para mí y tu canal es donde vengo para mejorar mi español boricua.
You have the best content for teaching the PR accent! It was easier to understand neutral spanish when I was a beginning student. But as I worked toward conversational spanish in PR, understanding the accent was a challenge. There are plenty of channels that teach more neutral spanish and very few that are specific to PR spanish. I continue to learn both. Keep doing what you're doing Rocky. 🥳🥳Terrific Job!

Mi primer lengua es ingles y estudio español, pero quiero darles a ustedes mi opinion. Los acentos son inseparable de las idiomas. Es imposible que tengamos una idioma sin acento, pero por supuesto hay acentos mas destacados, obvio, o los que se diferencian de los normes aceptados. Pero nunca ha sido una problemas para mi, realmente los acentos son muy fascinantes a mi. Es una manera para decir soy de aquí o expresarse. Gracias para los videos amigo!

10:45 Rocky, I first came across your videos right at the start of my journey to learn Spanish. Your teaching and methods became the go-to place for my learning and practice. That was 5 months ago. I just found your channel and I’m excited! My family is from Ecuador so I’m very glad you don’t have a more neutral or Spain accent like they would always teach in Spanish classes. I remember times in Spanish class where I wished they showed more accent or word pronunciation variety so it could feel more relevant to why I wanted to learn.

No existe el español neutro. Todos tenemos nuestras preferencias. Hay cosas que me gustan del español de España más que del español de las Américas y viceversa. Me gustó mucho este vídeo.
Efectivamente. Eso de “neutro” es algo de la RAE. NADIE en ningún idioma habla neutro. Desafortunadamente demasiada gente busca cualquier razón para sentirse superior a los demás, y los acentos y el habla siempre han llegado a ser estrategias políticas de avergonzar a ciertos grupos.

Rocky, de hecho para mi tu eres un crack en este. No se si te importa mucho las razones que tienen tus seguidores porque quieren aprender español y porque les gustan aprender de los videos qué haces pero bueno, te contaré solo un poco sobre las mías. Al principio aprendí mi español cuando era muy joven pero como se pasó los años viviendo en EEUU así perdi mi bilingüismo. Hoy en día mi suegro es de 🇵🇷 y por fin decidí en la pandemia de dedicarme a mejorar mi español. Lo que querría ver más que todo fue videos de personas enseñando y explicando como es el español de PR y tu canal fue como oasis en el desierto. Espero que sigas exactamente así, si un poco vocabulario, gramática, y eso, pero los videos como cuando traduces letras de unas canciones o muestras ti mismo cocinando ha mostrado la riqueza de la cultura, como personas realmente usar este idioma a expresarles, y son los que más valen. Espero que te redoblas exactamente en el camino que estás. Gracias por todo lo qué haces, te cuida.
Aunque estoy aprendiendo español mexicano, me motiva mucho cuando escucho tu español con un acento de Puerto Rico porque muchas veces, todavía puedo entenderte y me ayuda oír mas sobre los acentos diferentes. Es emocionante para mi cuando me doy cuenta que aunque tenemos acentos diferentes a final de día, podemos entendernos y comunicarnos.

I live in CT, your channel is one of the few that teaches PR and Caribian accents. I need this because no one around me talks like people from spanish and very little people talk like mexicans. They all talk like Bad Bunny. I need to hear more and more of the PR accent and learn from it beacause it is the most useful to me.
It would be "nice", and "convenient", if there was a "neutral" Spanish; but, that's just not how languages work. If a traveler was to take a step back- and even a walk through the study of human migration patterns- said traveler should* understand that the primary language will become altered throughout regions, countries, and continents. Por ejemplo: Arabic is spoken from Morocco, to Pakistan; but, that languages varies greatly in dialect. The same with English (consider English in Jamaica, England, Samoa, and the United States). Great incites, friend. You're a gem of a teacher!

That's like saying that only people who went to Oxford University should teach English. As long as the teacher speaks clearly, who cares with what accent? Languages developed first and foremost for communication, not to have a Miss Universe contest for accents.

Right on! Your response to the person's criticism is respectful and wise, reflecting much thought on the subject. In similar fashion, one could argue that only persons from England should teach English. That approach is nonsense, of course. It would rob the learner of the many varied ways people in English-speaking countries have of expressing themselves regionally and culturally. What a great loss that would be! I am all for learning the richness of the Spanish language as spoken in various countries and locales. Please keep doing exactly what you are doing!
Aprender una languages no es solamente aprender palabras y gramatica, pero tambien aprender una cultura (como dijiste). Este es la parte perdida en clases de espanol. Aunque me es dificil el espanol puertorriqueno, me gusta tu canal y lo que ensenas.
My first semester of Spanish was a professor who was an American woman who started learning Spanish in high school, my second semester was a professor who was a woman from Spain. That second professor was hella strict and faster paced and would mark us down for not having the Spanish lisp. I could tell she took it a little personal that everyone in her American classroom had grown up hearing South American accents and didn't pronounce words the correct Spain Spanish way. ;D
As I have studied languages I have noticed that there are only a few root languages. It would be cool to have a learning system that teaches the root languages side by side at the same time because I think it might help with memory to learn more than one language at once. With a foundation in the root languages then you can understand the basics of most languages and pick up on the particulars of each from there.

Nope, it's a no go for neutral Spanish for me. I have Puerto Rican blood. Trying to speak more neutrally made me stutter more than what I already do. I'm just now beginning to get a handle on that in both my languages. So, I must respectfully disagree with that person. Ni modo hablaré un español "neutro." Intenté de hablar con un acento neutro, y me fracasé. Casi me mató. Ese empeño hizo que tardamudeara más de lo que hago en ambos idiomas. Mi herencia boricua no me permite hablar de manera neutra, aparentemente. Tampoco hablaría de manera neutra en inglés. El español neutro no ha sido servicial para mi. The audacity of people to come to a channel and don’t know anything about the creator. Love the Puerto Rican accent. It’s the accent I’m striving for in my Spanish journey.
I encountered this in academia. I grew up with my boriqua homies and used to repeat everything I heard both them and the Dominican elders would say. I was all confident until college where the teachers and tutors tore me up about it. But now I can be "Bien educado" but I love speaking with a boriqua/Dominicano accent because as a Black Man it's almost like speaking AAVE.
It's no different than somebody from the south teaching English. Yeah, it has a different syntax and sound, but elementary, it's still American. Goes with all languages, and most importantly, DIALECTS, around the world. Anyways, learning another language NEVER made anyone stupider. Appreciate the videos, and cheers!

In fact I’d argue that a lot of your audience has Puerto Rican heritage and comes here specifically to learn the accent and style. Just like me. Mis abuelos son de Guayama Puerto Rico. But you do speak Spanish with no Boricua accent as well in your courses. I’m enrolled in your courses on your website. Regardless you’re fantastic and I’ve learned a lot from you bro.
I'm half puerto rican and I want to learn puerto rican Spanish but I don't know anyone who teaches specifically and focuses on the puerto rican dialect only. Maybe if I find a private tutor online or something. In my opinion it's so easy to learn and understand Spanish from Mexico. Once I actually become advanced it will be easier to pick up on the PR or DR Spanish completely and switch my dialect since I already know a little on how they pronounce certain words.
It's a sad truth that some Spanish language learners are chastised, even by loved ones. My ex boyfriend used to laugh at me when I tried to speak Spanish. I'm half Mexican, he's 100%, but we both were born in the U.S. His mom spoke Spanish to him at home, mine did not. I was very self conscious about my American accent and small vocabulary, so his laughter didn't help. Fortunately, I've moved on, recently started relearning Spanish again, and have met people that are more supportive.
Todo saben el español de Colombia es el mejor en el mundo😊 jajaja!! Pero enserio de acuerdo con Rocky! Its important to choose which spanish you want to learn. For me I love Colombian Spanish I love the paisa accent I try to model my spanish after that. I love all the accents from all the countries, The most difficult for me is Puerto Rican, Cuban, and Costeño español de Colombia. They cut alot of words short and talk fast but even still I can understand about 75% of what they say. Like Rocky said regardless of what accent you learn you can still communicate with people from different countries, I have talked with people from Colombia, Paraguay, Venezuela, DR, Panama, Argentina etc... Yes its a little weird to hear como te shama (Argentina) but I understood them all!! I understood everything Rocky said without the subtitles. But also you learn when to use certain phrases and when not, im not going to say to someone in Puerto Rico, Hola veci que mas lol because that is a Bogotá thing, I would say buenas tardes, quetal... I love the local slang in my neighorhood in Bogotá and I love being able to talk with spanish speakers from all over the world.

Yo , some of us wanna learn the carribean accents , learn to understand it at the very least and in the world of language learning , there aint nobody normalizing this way of speaking. I dont wanna be that girl but cmon , what the f is with white folk wanting to police black and brown folk regarding how they speak . The world of language learning wants learners to learn the colonizing country's way of speaking and usually its the people who look like that and more importantly, COMPLY to that idea , that are given due respect and consideration in these circles ....and you know what, i am glad that i lived in NY , learnt from Black and Brown folks how to speak slang heavy , rapperish , hood english which is basically the de colonized version of english and i would like to do the same for spanish and there are MANY outlets that cater to teaching you how to speak "proper spanish" and "proper english" etc but if you would like to dare to decolonize your mind and see what else lies out there then, we have channels like this to thank. Thank you truly for teaching us PR spanish , please never hide it ... i dont care if the language learning world is racist AF and yeah i will call comments like this freaggin racist and yet i am grateful that people like you exist and still express their freedom to be and be who they are , with the way they speak.

The commenter isn't realizing that English is spoken all over the world and everyone speaks it differently. Why would Spanish be any different?
Spanish is Spanish no matter the accent. That’s like saying if you learn American English no one in England or Australia will understand you. I speak Mexican Spanish and had no issues conversing with Puerto Ricans, Colombians, or Spaniards and via versa.

I think it is also extremely important to note that with a language historically associated with colonialism that the pursuit of "neutral" here is fundamentally tied to this history. The regional linguistics are part and parcel of Indigenous and African languages' influence and by erasing that we end up repeating that harm. There is no neutral. Paulo Freire's Pedagogia do Oprimido is a great tool to learn about this Lo siento, no puedo escribir eso en español todavía.
I think people misinterpret (or wrongly apply) the term "neutral" when referring to languages... I don't believe it was ever meant to describe a language as being 100% free of *any* local sound mannerisms or accents... as if it was being spoken by robots with no human connection whatsoever. "Neutral" simply means using the "correct" terms and words spoken clearly with as little "slang" as possible with the goal of the most efficient and quickest communication possible... i.e. how the *majority* of speech we hear in our everyday lives comes to us via television media (news broadcasts, shows), movies, official communications from higher levels of government, etc. As long as you're accomplishing the goals of precise, clear communication to get your message across with as little words as possible, you say this is "neutral" enough in whatever language you're speaking and in whatever country... it doesn't mean having "zero" accent or being so sterile that nobody would guess where the speaker is from.
As a Puerto Rican born and raised in NY, here’s my opinion. “Neutral” Spanish... AKA “Proper” Spanish is the only Spanish that should honestly ever be “taught”, as there is no such thing as Puerto Rican Spanish. It’s purely a dialect. And dialects are learned naturally, by either living in said country, or by having family members speaking to you in that dialect from an early age. Why would you want to be taught a dialect if you have no intent to live in that country, or have family and friends to speak it to? And for your comment about not being Puerto Rican enough, well, no, we’re not “real” Puerto Rican’s either. We’re Americans. PR culture in the US, especially in NYC, is a 180 to living day to day life on the island. Its not even close. I love it there, and it’s so beautiful, but you couldn’t pay me enough money to live there and give up my American lifestyle and luxuries I have, that quite frankly, aren’t afforded to a lot of boricuas. We are Americans with PR heritage... we should embrace our heritage with open arms but understand it is solely just that, heritage. I don’t take those comments personally or get offended when I’m called not a real boricua. Maybe it’s just me. Regardless, you have helped a lot of people feel connected with their heritage, so props to you! ❤
By this logic, US English is a dialect of UK English and everyone should only learn UK English accent.
Todo el mundo tiene un acento, no existe idioma neutral. Formal o informal, pero nunca neutral.
