  • 9:00 Just so y’all know, that brief flash of “Approaching Monster Balls” is an actual mission in EDF5. And it’s THE best mission for weapon farming, especially late game weapons if you boost the difficulty to the “Insane” tier, because there’s a spot on the map that you can hide and be completely safe from harm, and murder every enemy who tries to kill you. Here’s how it works. The mission starts, and you’re facing a bridge, with some NPC Fencers in front of you. Step 1: Turn to your right. Step 2: Abandon those NPC’s to their fate by running like hell. Step 3: Follow the river until you reach a waterfall at the end. Step 4: Turn right, and notice there’s some rocks, with a very narrow gap between those rocks that you can walk into. Step 5: Go into the gap, turn around, whip out your weapon of choice (NOT AN EXPLOSIVE WEAPON) and wait for the enemies to finish off the NPCs. After which, they WILL come STRAIGHT for you. Step 6: When the enemies start swarming the rocks, and cannot reach you in your hideyhole, pull the trigger and do not stop pulling the trigger until the enemies are dead. Step 6B: There will be opportunities to run out and grab the weapon boxes during the mission. When the 2nd enemy reinforcement wave appears, it’ll take a long time for them to reach you, grab whatever boxes you can then, and get back in the hole. And at the end of the mission if you feel like it, leave one enemy alive so you have plenty of time to grab the boxes, just dodge them while you’re running around until you feel like you’ve gotten everything and then murder them. [Edit] @Type Odd Name Here below reminded me of a weird Not-glitch for this mission too. You’ll know when the NPC’s are dead because a half-dozen of the red dots on your mini-map will suddenly shoot up high, and then come down on top of you. Because I don’t know why, but some of the roller-ball enemies will be yeeted literally across the map to your location once you’re the only target left for them to go after. And if you feel like it, you can wait to go into the crack, and watch them shoot up in the air and head for you. Just make sure to duck into the shelter before they land, because they’re trying to land ON you, lol.

    • @@HaalvarBrandGoods That makes sense. That sounds like a very smart reasonable way to do in that situation. (I am not being sarcastic.) Yeah it seems like most of the time meth heads are almost as emotionally stable as a regular person unless they just had some meth so they're not thinking straight and something emotionally "triggers" them. Like I had a friend of a friend who was addicted to meth. He was fine most of the time except one time when it seems he had just had a dose of meth and was hitting on this 20 something woman who was another friend of a friend of mine and trying to hit on her even though she was obviously not into him and was put off by his pervy BS. What made the situation worse was none of us had cars, we were about to go see a WWE match playing at the local movie theatre and we stopped for awhile at my place to eat some drinks and snacks before going to the movie theatre. The meth head went first and I told everyone else (because many od them were kind of f'ing $+μp!d) "just stay here do not go to the theatre with this guy". Later he texted the woman some creepy AF comments. Then of course the rest of us cut him out of the friend group completely.

  • I think one of the great attractions of this game is that you can experience the streets of Japan. From rural areas lined with paddy fields and frontier cities with small train stations to core cities lined with skyscrapers and residential areas with small alleys, everything is realistically reproduced. One such map (used in Operation Ironwall, etc.) is modeled after a real-life Hokkaido metropolis, which makes you feel like you've actually traveled. (Although it will be broken immediately by the attack of enemies and allies) Sandlot, the company behind the EDF series, seems to like making city maps like this, and in the works they released for the Nintendo DS, they placed buildings so much that it slowed down the game. In a way, it is the fruit of their efforts.

When I first played 4.1 they really captivated me because they just look very real, but then get filled to the brim with ants and get totally destroyed. I always wanted to be able to go inside more of the buildings or be able to actually navigate them better. My one wish for the series is that the character controls get updated to allow you to actually navigate the maps in a way that makes sense. Stairs on buildings don't really work, you can't use ladders, and there are a lot of jumps you can't make

  • Best part of my experience in this game was with my brother. It was the final boss, God. Literally. The two of us, always playing on Inferno difficulty, threw ourselves at Him countless times to no avail. So many hours. Each new phase was harder than the last. But eventually, it happened. As the Wing Diver, my strategy was swooping in and getting out, blasting God's face every time. But I was so vulnerable to damage. I couldn't finish Him off alone. That was when my brother, the air raider, had to save the day with a Barga unit. Just when we thought all was lost, Barga put us back on our feet. God knew He stood no chance against big robot. Barga, one punch after another, tore off God's limbs. And when He was taking his last breath, my brother, in a giant Transformers-esque robot, uppercut punched God in the chin, and HIS HEAD EXPLODED. Credits roll. Needless to say, my brother and I gave a standing ovation. EDF is beautiful.

It's not even trying to hold a stable framerate, be bugfree or be balanced in any way. What it is doing is taking a single idea and dumping every inch of the game's budget into achieving that idea in the most comically direct way possible.

  • The most fun / scary (highlight the necessary) is when an ant takes you with its mandibles and starts to pull at such a speed that you yourself become a piñata. He can crawl where and how he wants, he can spin circles on a lamppost while you are alive (even after you die, he will not leave this cycle until he is killed). And when a teammate launches you like a booster .... That ant is your partner. Because sides change. Part 6 has also been released, where you can put idol dolls, which are almost like living ones - they increase the morale of the soldiers and inspire them to become beacons for bugs, instead of themselves. Those. in fact - it's not the idol that distracts the ants to be torn to pieces while the soldiers kill the bugs, but the soldiers become a meat barrier so that GOD FORbid AT LEAST ONE PIECE OF CLOTHING IS RIPPED OFF HER! And if this happens, then the soldiers will become so aggressive that they will stand around the idol and repeat her movements, and then at once they will attack any bug that is looking for a lamppost to spin, well, or tug at one of the EDF marines."Remember, EDF Marine! In Part 6, your hope/your god is an idol! Protect it, at all costs!" And they will. Because to see how this "beacon" cheers you and your squad, which yells "FOR THE IDOL!" and mows down hordes of beetles on power lines like New Year's toys - is another level of aesthetics.

  • Fun fact: The timelines of the games change every two titles. EDF 1 _(Monster Attack)_ and 2 _(Global Defense Force)_ are separate from EDF 3 _(2017)_ and 4 _(2025 / 4.1 remake)._ 5 and 6 are separate from both of those. The reason for this is because there's a consistent pattern with the releases: The odd numbered ones set the already pretty bonkers stage, and the even ones take those stages and just blow them up to an 11 out of 10 on the crazy scale. They make the even ones so damn crazy, in fact, that they have to reboot the universe every time. Fun fact #2: Even with the previous fact, the first four titles in the "classic" series _(being the numbered ones that aren't spin-offs)_ can be played in a vacuum because the story doesn't matter quite as much. It's there, but it's not focused on. It's in the background to let the gameplay do most of the talking. 5 and 6, however, got a massive spike up in terms of story budget. So much so that the full story cannot be completely understood without playing both. Not-so-fun fact: EDF 6 is Japan Only currently. No plans for a Western Release just yet. They have to release the DLC Mission Packs first, like they did for 4.1 and 5 before THEY were released to the west. But dear god does it follow the pattern to a T. P.S: *_RANGERS ARE THE SUPERIOR CLASS. YOU CANNOT CHANGE MY MIND._* _(all the classes are good tho, no hate intended)_

Can confirm I need a minute or so to adjust to the funny boom and zoom power armor every time I have to leave behind my beloved air raids, and being unable to see utter carnage being inflicted on the enemies from a kilometer away while still somehow being hit by the flying gore from their dismembered limbs.

  • I would like start off by saying that I am a decent fencer with somewhat of a handle on the "riposte" mechanic. Fencer is actually a lot faster than he lets on, and if done right can even outpace Wing Diver. This is all thanks to a secret technique: In 4.1 it was Dash-Cancelling with shields or a quirky weapon called the Javelin, while in 5 and probably also 6 it's the Long-Jump A quick explanation. Both Dash-Cancelling and Long-Jumping require the ability to "cancel" the forward dash state. In 4.1, doing so would allow you to dash *immediately* after the conclusion of whatever action you cancelled the dash with. Among the possible ways to cancel a forward dash in 4.1, using a vertical jump boost was not one of them. This is important because that was changed in 5, and is the reason why Long-Jumping exists. The way it works is simple: The vertical jump boost preserves the momentum of a forward dash, therefore allowing you to jump further. And with items that increase your jump count, you can do like 5 successive Long-Jumps. And with a fraction of the arthritis caused by Dash-Cancelling in the previous title. Why isn't Dash-Cancelling in 5? Because the cooldown for the next dash(granted no forward dash increasing support item is equipped) is tied to a separate timer in 5 as opposed to the animation like in 4.1. Just try to remember when attempting the Long-Jump that getting hit by an enemy slows down your momentum
