Finding The Best Pie And Mash In London | Food Tours | Food Insider
Harry and Joe are like the perfect food review pair and I am here for all the content they drop
Agreed
Can’t wait until they start travelling to other countries together. The two of them in Japan or Mexico or Lebanon, etc would be awesome
except harry continuously makes false statements about food to his American counterpart and also makes odd decisions like...wasting a spot on a pork pie in a best pie and mash episode ....pork pies are not designed for pie and mash so shouldn't even get a mention edit : lol and greggs ? really? for pie and mash episode lool ffs
Thanks for being here!
Why eating with a knife and not spoon and why hasn't he turned pie over?????
To be clear to the US viewers, Jellied eels is just a London thing (and very localised even within london), most of us Brits would not touch that with a ten foot pole
Does my head in, every food show always has them when talking about British food. Its only eaten by weird old people in parts of London
It’s not even a current, localised London thing - it’s so specific, it’s eaten only by the elderly / boomers. It will die out in a generation or so, there isn’t a market for it.
Oh okay. Ick! 😂
Just to be clear it's not even London thing. It basically doesn't exist.
Good to know.
To be fair to Joe, having him try a Greggs AFTER going to 2 of the nicest pie shops in London is asking for disappointment 😂
Exactly. It's like trying Mcdonalds for the first time after going to a 5 star gourmet burger restaurant 🤣
I am sad the Drawn and Quartered was not represented here
having a greggs after getting robbed out of nearly a tenner for a pork pie is like getting cured of the plague
@@MrNannynooch Ah you mean Hung, drawn and quartered, not really.a food, more a gruesome spectacle because T.V hadn't been invented.
Sounds like going to Gregg's is a disappointment full stop, two out of the three items he tried he considered shit and the oh so mighty sausage roll was cited as tasting mass produced, and to top it off Gregg's don't do proper meat pies, sounds like a shit bakery to me....
I was absolutely stuffed after this shoot. Thank you to Harry for introducing me to all these great spots!
Hope your attitude improves in future episodes. Were you having a bad day when this was filmed? You seem super put out by doing this. Do better America.
@@Bangyourbirdnumb Yeah I think Joe is getting sick of having to pretend he enjoys British food. You can really tell he's having a bad time here.
@@Ironically-Sarcastic not enough additives & bullshit like high fructose corn syrup I guess.
@@Bangyourbirdnumb Joe's attitude does leave much to be desired. Almost like he doesn't even want to be doing this. I will say most famous "British" dishes are just kind of mid. Its mainly just varieties of a meat + bread + potatoes with very very limited spices when compared with the rest of the world. So many better cuisines. Laotian, Indian, Mexican, Spanish, Thai, Turkish, Italian, Pakistani, Japanese etc etc etc. The good news for the British is if "American" can even be considered its own cuisine then it is one of the few countries whose cuisine is more boring and bland than the cuisine of Britain. If we were putting the cuisines of the world in a tier list British would be C tier at best but really D tier. I mean in all seriousness what countries would be lower? America, maybe some Scandanavian countries?
@@concernedcitizen6572calling American BBQ boring should be a crime and you should be jailed for it
Joe’s finally said something that enrages me. Love the man, but as a geordie, the steak bake slander was a dagger to the heart.
iv only had the one greggs steak bake, and tbh it was a bit crap, kinda lie the malcolm allen ones you get from tesco, but steak bake from a corner shops' hot food cabinets, always seem to be way better
When i went to the uk for the 3rd time i HAD to go to Greggs , got the stake bake and i can happily say that it was hella mid haha won't be going back there
I call it a dog food slice. Still buy one every time
@@CannekeTheFeeder So trying ONE menu item (not even the signature one) was enough to never go back there?
@@ashhabimran239 actually ate the chicken one too but that was also not good 🤷♂️
Harry needs to take Joe on a post-pub 11pm tour to various Northern cities to try out the local takeaway delicacies. Middlesborough for a Parmo tour Wigan for a Wigan Kebab tour Leeds for a Chip Butty Anywhere else for a doner kebab, from a bricks and mortar takeaway to a dodgy roadside van type. Although to get the real experience, they must have drank at least 5 pints of export lager in a Weatherspoons beforehand.
+1 for the parmo. Something tells me he won't really like any of them though! They're an... acquired taste
Love a parmo
It is an easier taste to acquire 8 pints in.
all of that will be in london and will be way higher quality than the shit up north
Liverpool for Scouse or Salt & Pepper Chips
I love seeing an american compliment the british on having well seasoned food
That's because he's actually been to the UK and tried our food, unlike most Americans who are still peddling and outdated stereotype
@@kevintwine2315 Exactly this. Either they haven't tried it and go along with the stereotype, or they tried a crappy, unauthentic version and judge it off that. And the Americans who do come to the UK and actually try it (from what I've seen) tend to genuinely enjoy it
@@ashhabimran239just like foreigners say the exact same thing about American food lol
we know what we are doing it turns out
@@kevintwine2315listen, we have the internet. we can see what you all eat on a daily basis. Your “Chinese” food that your people pour table salt on by the tablespoon, is not well seasoned
Like so many! Joe and Harry’s food tours are the best on this channel! I hope they can do best Sunday roast in London. That would also be cool if they went to Los Angeles and did a food tours there! Perhaps somewhere else in England like Manchester!
Up north tour needs to be a thing.
outside of england might be good too. edinburgh has a pretty good food scene, and we've got different dishes here you don't get in england too
As an Australian, I've had some great international flavours in pies. Some of my favourites have been Thai Green Curry, Japanese Curry (vegetarian), Chicken Tikka, Texas Brisket, and Barbacoa Beef Tex Mex. But sometimes nothing beats a steak and chilli pie from the local bakery
As an Australian you’re only a few hours away from NZ, home of the best pies the world.
currently in nz, theres a bakery just across from the flat stay at - they make their pies fresh every morning (can smell it from the flat) : always a variety, changes often; but the best is the shakshuka pie, the thai green curry pie, and the cumin bread so very much agree that looking further than potato tops or ham n cheese is sweet as
I miss the pie van that used to turn up at our Warehouse every smoko...a can, a chilli beef pie, and for loose change less than $5.....can't put me pants on for less than $5 now
@@MasterChief37 Only a few hours if I was on the east coast. 7 hours for a direct flight or cheaper option is 10-13 hours
@michaeljones1445 Lucky. When I was doing work experience, it was Mrs Mac pies at the lunch bar around the corner.
Now that you guys introduced Australia into the mix I kinda want to see a classic aussie meat pie episode!
Joe seems constantly irked by the British food experience 😂
And I appreciate it SO much, because cmon 😅
DO YOU BLAME HIIIIMMMMM????
He’s cynical but he almost always enjoys it eventually
But yet enjoys it 😉
@@GoodJobLittleBuddy those jellied eels must taste like the economy feels at the moment: hard to swallow and leave a bitter taste in your mouth!
I'm in Love with the Green Tiles in Manze place & the Melamine School Dinner Plates, Vintage Vibes 🟩🟢❇✳
I love you guys as a team! You are both eccentric in your own ways and I love it!
Watching you two make the USA V UK “Finding the best food tours”have been such an awesome series. Please..please make more I’m hooked I find them so educational and humorous you’re on to a winner with the “ Finding the best food tours”. Loving it! X
Pie & mash is one of my favourite dishes to have after being out of the country, so homely.
Not from London so for me it's got to be pie mash n beans!
short tangent: in the US that would be “homey”, and “homely” means not pretty.
@@JustMe-dc6ksI think they meant “homey” tbh. Like wholesome.
@@jasminappleby779 No no I mean't homely. It's often used where I'm from. BRITISH (of a place or surroundings) simple but cosy and comfortable, as in one's own home. "a modern hotel with a homely atmosphere"
@@JustMe-dc6ks Thanks for the snippet of information on this, I'll be sure not to be throwing around the word homely when I'm next stateside.
I like how Joe is actually enjoying British cuisine. I'd want to give jellied eels a shot too.
Add black pepper or vinegar/chili vinegar and you’ll be happy.
Trust me you wouldn’t 🤢
“You guys better be good at spices considering….” 👀😂
Love this series and how informative it is with the history and context of the food. Thanks guys, keep it up !
Thanks for watching!
Magical series! Thanks for uploading another one! Please never ever stop making them!
Thanks for watching!
I don't think Harry realizes how iconic his Dolphins' Starter jacket is 💯
A good pie is something magical. I love my Mum's beef and ale pie, it's just so tasty.
Finally, Food Wars does Greggs.
Love this Duo! They're changing each other's hearts and mind one video at a time 😊
I just love these two's chemistry😄 Whenever I see them I instantly click on the thumbnai and enjoy😎
Making turkey, gammon and leek pie after Christmas is a tradition in our family.
We don't celebrate christmas because we are Jehovas Witnesses. So yeah... ur gay.
@@user-zy9yg2eu5t That's not a very Christian thing to say. Matthew 7:1-3 Judge not, that ye be not judged. LESGOOOO ANOTHER FOOD TOUR EPISODEEEEE I LOVE THESE 2 MAN THEY'RE SO ENTERTAINING. THEYRE THE PERFECT COMBO. HAHA KEEP EM COMING FOOD INSIDER!!!❤❤😂😂
I’m an Aussie, pies mash and gravy are a staple dish. I would love to try Mrs Mash, that looked delicious.
I spent a year working in Sydney and moved over to st Kilda I lived off the bacon and cheese pies over there and meat and wine co .
Mother mash is so gooood. It's one of mine and husbands fav places! So glad you went there!
I love the going over seas and making content with each other
Steak and Blue Cheese is a top tier combo
loving this series, i'm going to london in april for my birthday!
My favourite food wars are when you two are together. So very entertaining 👍
I’d love to see a late-night foods tour, check out some of our 24hr establishments across London (brick lane bagels, polo bar 24hr bottomless brunch, duck & waffle etc.)
These two are always such a great team!🙂
I love this series!!! Fun that you try a range of options-even Greggs!
Always enjoy your vlogs so interesting, history and food , win win 👏👍
Love the videos of you guys together ❤😂🎉🙌🏼
Slices of pork pie, big chunk of stilton, some picalilli, a garden salad, and a pint of well-kept London Pride. I'm not sure it gets much better.
Exactly 😋
Harry and Joe are my favourite duo on KZhead, love these collaborations so please keep doing them
the artwork on the walls of Mother Mash!!!
That would be me,mash doused drenched with gravy, chef’s kiss!💋
Been waiting for this one.
I hope they do more food tours like this. This was interesting and enlightening. I might visit mother mash or the last place next time in London.
Stanley Tucci now lives in London wants to do one of his travel food programs in the UK because the food is so great. This is directed to you Americans. He said London is the best city in the world for food. I don’t need to buy it from the shops et cetera, but we must have every sort of cuisine in the world. And don’t get me started on the quality compared to American food.
Like every other country, some dishes are done better than others. I would not eat this in the US.
British food has an unfairly bad reputation. We do pies and roasts better than any other country. America kicks our arse for BBQ. Each country has merits but American TV does love to push the narrative British food is bad like it’s some sort of insecurity they have.
Bear in mind you can get a sit down hot meal in London for £5 in some shops.
Joe is a legend for trying Greggs 🤌
Right. I wish he tried the Sausage & Bean Melt and Chicken Bake though.
You better be good with spices considering......😂😂😂😂 2:50
Ikr😂😂😂
Something about colonialism?
Understood 🤣🤣
Nope can't compare to humble India not even close. Even after 400 years
Pork Pie and HP Sauce would be a winner, never had mustard or pickle/chutney though
Salad cream?...
Piccalilli is great with a pork pie, I personally can't imagine HP with it. Either plain or with something mustardy or pickle-y
Try with English mustard. Tiny bit with each bite the flavours compliment each other so well.
Pork pie, branston pickle and English mustard was my go-to lunch in my old job
If its a really good pork pie then no sauce at all but if its average or less then plenty of HP
Pork pie with mango chutney is God tier food
I love Pieminister... they are the best pies you can find in supermarkets and in London/UK! shame you did not have the opportunity to taste them. maybe next time!
Ignoring the price they are pretty good. Only time I've ever tried them was as a poor student though. Can't really fault the Pukka Pie down the chippy either
'you better be good with spices.. considering!' Oh WOWWWW. THat was Fire.
Yess! Keep 'em coming!
Whenever you eat beef or beefy pies with mash, you must ALWAYS put some horseradish in the mash! it cuts through the richness and is SOOOO GOOD!!
Yes, Greggs! Newcastle's favourite export!
greggs is abit like mcdonolds. No one will ever mistake them for good quality but they're strangely satisfying
These British Meat Pies are awesome. When the British were running Hong Kong, they introduced these meat pies which became so popular that the HK Chinese made their own versions now seen in most Chinese Bakeries- Chicken, Pork, curry beef, and even tuna filo pastry pies.
ugh i really do love this series so much. I can't even count how many times I've rematches the videos. become a part of my comfort videos. something that isn't easy to do these days! please dont stop this series!!
Love the spice reference by Harry with the country! 😂
Course you do.
Willy’s pie’s look tasty. Would love to check these out when in London. Loved this one, guys.
Winter cozy food hands down .
I really want to do a drinking game with one of these episodes, having a drink every time Joe says ”fantastic”
Head north to Scotland and get a Scotch Pie and my favourite a Forfar Bridie!
The best food reviewers I’ve seen. Constantly good content🔥
Omg guys! So happy you took my advice and went for pie! 🙏🌈🌹
I think Steak Pie is up there with one of my favourite dishes… if I lived in the west of Scotland it would maybe be a Killie pie !!
I'm going to the UK this week and this series has been so helpful! Thank you guys!
Give local places a try but also go to a Greggs on your visit. Have fun! (And bring an umbrella and a coat, the weather is rubbish at the moment)

Warm pork pie is amazing. I strongly recommend!
Mustard on a pork pie is a MUST! So underrated
Sweeney Todd’s pies in Reading is iconic. Should’ve taken Joe there for the real pie experience.
This is a pie and mash video, and they don’t even make pie and mash… not really suitable for this format. Look nice tho.
@@redeye1016 Didn’t see mash at Borough, Pork Pie shop, Greggs or last establishment. Sweeney’s do do veg (potatoes, carrots, etc) on the side.
@@CBEEBLE Look, no one is going to Reading. Forget it.
@@jonathanbowen3640 this is the real reason they didn’t go lol
@@CBEEBLEthat’s not really the point - they were all local to London/flagship pies. Why tf would they go all the way to reading to represent something they already showcased 🙄
I love the Harry & Joemance! And gutted you guys didn't try a Ginger Pig sausage roll to compare against Greggs one, especially since you were just there!
Yes yes sure give me video like this too watch❤❤❤ love it . Make it more and more
I'm Asian so naturally I'm not used to cold meat pies. However, I appreciate that pies are affordable and practical. Idk much about British history, but it brings a sense of nostalgia as it reminds me of the industrial workers who were the backbone of the economy at that time.
Another good place for east end pie n mash is Arments just off Walworth Road, its my go to when im in London
Arments is Best pie and mash in London. And Manze's is South London not east
@@GarySmith-oo5jdI was watching thinking who thinks Berm is east end?
I’m new to hot water pastry but I saw a recipe online and had to try it. Hands down the best pastry for a savory pie.
And so easy to make too!
Keep these videos coming!
As a chef a comfy pie for a performer to leap out of would be a easy Saturday morning. Mini pies, bottled spiced wine, & treats could also be included inside.
Sausage rolls are amazing. After visiting the UK, I’ve been making them at home for breakfast prep, I prefer the vegan ones tho.
_Wahoo! Let's 'a go!_
heeyyy willy's pies are just round the corner from me in London Fields. Had their pies a few times now. nice to see them get a mention
The Melton Mowbray is classed as a hand-raised pie, The meat is grey because it uses fresh pork, with no added meat preservatives, unlike most other pies. If the meat is pink it has a preservative of some kind, not that they have cooked the pork for less time.
Ah, just in time for my dinner, although sadly not pie and mash. Mother Mash looked the most visually appealing and true to best form. BTW, no one eats a MM pork pie that way, cut it up first, it's so much better in a slice when that size, and yes, with a sauce or a pickle please!
I lived in London for 16 years. I never once went to a pie and mash shop. This video made me feel like I missed out
I know mate, I've never tried it but would like to, it looks Great
Have a revisit and treat yourself to some good old pie and mash, liquor optional of course, but I'm more of a gravy girl.
One of my fondest memories of GB is the pork pies served on British Rail in 1972. Never found anything else that tasted like those pies. And I've tried.
Good video very interesting, he spoke his mind about the food, Entertaining, !!!!😊
Joe is hysterical, as always. Harry is pure awesome, as always.
Pork pie and sweet pickle 😊
Best food duo currently!
i LOVE how joe is like “nope, that didn’t happen, but go on anyway” when harry starts telling the story of lord minimus 🤣🤣🤣
You should check out the Balti Triangle in Birmingham. The curries are fantastic.
Shebabs is defo worth a visit
Definitely didn't need two of those Mowbrays! hahaha
Best series they do
Pies have soo many variations, it’s just part of our culture. Australian and N Zealand I think too. Plus sausage rolls.
Steak bake might have a worcestshire sauce that is why he tastes seafood.
I actually saw you film this from my office.
I really enjoy this duo
Watching this makes me super hungry. Love to see Harry wearing a Dolphins jacket as well!🐬
I love those 2 guys banter
Pork pie yum🤤
Missed opportunity, but another place that they could've tried was Pieminster. As the name suggests, it's an establishment that emphasises on serving pies. I went to the one in Cardiff last year, and it did not disappoint
I can't get over Joe's expressiveness! He's fun to watch. Also, his hair is cool.
