    • I mean Disney was always that even in its golden years. The problem was in 2023 Disney wasn't just Disney the animator. It was Disney the studio that owned or bought out a good chunk of media companies at a time when the very IP-driven culture people craved a decade ago was running out of steam. So that's not exactly Disney's fault, it just became the posterchild for outrage at this culture of our own creation.

      @benwasserman8223@benwasserman82233 ай бұрын
    • I mean, Walt Disney was so mad at animators asking for decent wages that he had Dumbo basically take the piss out of them (hence, the sequence with the clowns that get drunk and then march off singing "we're going to ask the big boss for a raise". As bad as Bob Iger is, I can't imagine him doing something so petty) so it's not like they ever had a reputation for treating their employees well.

Granting everyones wishes isn’t the best solution, and it probably won’t ever be. The story should have been that Asha wanted to grant everyones wishes, but doesn’t understand when Magnifico says no. He let’s her see what sort of chaos insues, and in the end he or Asha uses their wish to fix it all. She learns the importance of limits, and Magnifico is able to step down.

I wanted to hate him going into my first watching of the movie, but the more I watch it, the more I can see he's not the actual villain. He's actually just a human with flaws and undiagnosed mental disorders. Not only is it demonizing mental illness, but it's also enforcing the stigma that men shouldn't show any kind of weakness. That men aren't allowed to have bad days or show any emotions, they're just supposed to 'man up'. And I just can't hate someone who is literally just acting like a human being. As someone who is married to someone who has panic attacks almost all day, everyday, I could literally see the signs that he was becoming overwhelmed and starting to have anxiety because of how selfish his people were. They weren't focused on their safety, but their own wants and needs. • And you know what's the worst part? The entire movie was him looking for an apprentice that would take care of the Kingdom of Rosas. Because everyone was so focused on their own happiness, no one was willing to take on his role. He knew someone self-centered could abuse this power and start granting wishes carelessly for themselves or others, causing chaos. That's why he was disappointed over and over again when his apprentices only wanted to get close to him to get personal favors. They didn't care about the common good, only about themselves. Asha was the most shameless one, doing it on day one. He could've used his powers for ANYTHING, yet his only focus was to keep peace in Rosas, so no one had to suffer like he did. And of course, he went crazy when some kid started trampling over his life's work as a temper tantrum, thinking they knew better. Because their grandpa (WHO WAS OLDER THAN THE KING AND PROBABLY CHOOSE TO MOVE IN) couldn't learn how to play the guitar. Scratch that, he wanted people to like what he played and feel inspired by what he played. Imagine having that power over people, that's actually really dangerous.

    • @@gemart7343 Oh yeah, absolutely. I do believe he knew how easily corruptible someone in his position was, which is why he wanted a good apprentice to take the role from him. But years of being exposed to people's selfishness and lack of appreciation slowly made him callous. How many generations of possible apprentices just looking to gain power? The breaking point was when Asha brought a literal star to break the order of things. So he kinda went, “F it, if Rosas gets ruined, might as well be by me. After all, who else deserves it, but me?” He fell into the corruption he tried to avoid and that he was hoping his true apprentice wouldn't fall into. King Magnifico is the perfect example of someone with good will and intentions that eventually became disillusioned by the world and the people. Added to that, his past traumas made him a bit too paranoid and controlling, eventually transforming him into what he sought to destroy. He would've been an amazing character to explore, and about how one person carrying such responsibility gets affected. But Disney fumbled HARD.

  • I think Disney just needs some new perspectives… a LOT of Disney artists are taught to draw a very very specific way, animate a specific way… story tell a specific way. A lot go to the exact same schools. This movie to me feels like the ultimate culmination of that idea. Most people talk about the music being lame, or how the main character is sooo goofy silly girl like Rapunzel… but what stands out most to me is how it’s animated. Not necessarily visually in design but more so how the characters actually MOVE and their facial expressions. You start to get a sense that there’s maybe 5 people at Disney in charge of actually coming up with mannerisms and expressions… so inevitably it feels like 5 actors are playing every character in the movie, in all of the movies. Like there are mannerisms this protag does that I’ve seen done very similarly in recent movies and I’m like “oh so so and so was in charge of how this character moves AND Mirabel from Encanto” In my opinion it leads all of the characters to feel samey in more than just personality but physicality.

  • In my personal opinion, the reason Asha lacks a character arc is because the team originally wrote Wish as a love story. The wishing star is supposed to be a star boy, and Asha's love interest. Asha and the star boy are soul mates; it was mentioned that they had an emotional journey. The star boy was said to be inspired by Peter Pan with a Mickey Mouse charm. I heard that the main conflict that Asha is supposed to face is something related to the Star Boy sacrifice or something, and King Magnifico's wife is supposed to be a villain too; they're supposed to be a villain power couple.

If he was lured into corruption by a genuine desire to good, and she was a party to/witness to his descent into madness but ultimately chose to oppose him, it would have made for more compelling storylines for both of them. Since it's a kid's movie, the ending might then be a bit too tragic but say, Instead of the stupid song at the end and Asha becoming the new wish granter, the people of Rosas all wish to free their King from evil and they go on as before but with a humbled, more receptive King and a more informed populace.

Someone in the comments made a good point by saying that when they had the Lion King soundtrack playing, their sibling asked to skip Scar’s song “Be Prepared” because it always scared him. That’s what a villain song should do. Even Scar’s design is creepy. You have Poor Unfortunate Souls, Mother Knows Best, Hellfire, Friends on the Other Side. And apparently Asha was supposed to have a love interest named Starboy. It would’ve been nice to have a love story like the original Disney movies.

Imagine if the president of a country was constantly doing stupid things to get himself impeached. • There’s actually a deleted scene where he eats wishes to become a hulking, brutish monster and reveals he never cared about the people’s wishes, even snacking on them at times to get power. I think the issue was that Disney wanted a complex antagonist, but the Disney villains of the past owned their villainy and that was wonderful to watch. They were all power hungry madmen with no regard for anything but themselves. But trying to make Magnifico complex just makes him confusing. If they’d kept the pretense that he pretends to care to hold onto power but steadily becomes more unhinged as time goes on, that’d be more compelling for a villain.

      @SpiderkillersInc@SpiderkillersInc3 ай бұрын
    • Personally, I think I would’ve had him be the same until he crushes the first wish. He gets such a rush from doing it that he immediately becomes addicted and tries to keep riding that high. For the rest of the movie, everything he does is to hold onto the wishes so he can crush them. Maybe near the end he starts trying to take the wishes of everyone, not just the adults, so he can feed his addiction. And instead of him getting locked in the mirror, Asha’s able to talk him down and get him to give everyone’s wishes back (the ones that are left, at least) and get help. This would allow the Queen to be good (she just wants to help her unwell husband), and explain the King’s sudden heel turn out of nowhere. It also fits with the modern Disney theme of no one person being the villain, but rather an idea (Magnifico’s not the problem here, it’s his addiction). Only issues I see are that it muddles the almost-an-allegory of the wishes being childhood dreams. We may also need to delete some earlier scenes to fit that thread in in a reasonable amount of time. There’s also the fact that I came up with this off the top of my head when Alex played the wish crushing scene, so it likely has a number of holes in it. No idea how to fix the rest of the movie though, as I have not seen it.

  • I haven't watched the movie myself, and quite frankly after Alex talking about it, I don't see any reason to either. Which... that's kind of a depressing mindset to have when Disney was a part of your childhood. 100 years anniversary? It has ALL the potential to bring those older generations back together in one-sitting. If just they had done something memorable. I totally agree that the premise actually could've been really interesting. I can just imagine it: A kingdom is built on wishes; the wishes are taken from the people as a metaphor for them growing up. A film premise that COULD reflect how those generations in the real world(the viewers) have grown up over the past 100 years. But as the movie progresses, the characters learn to reunite with their wishes, learning the valuable lesson that. a) wishes can't be taken from us. Our wishes(the viewers' childhood dreams) remain valid as grownups. It's alright to be a kid. or b) wishes don't need to be fulfilled by a fairy, going to Neverland... or having a king fulfill them. As a grownup, you can still live your dreams or try to, at least. Because grownups aren't hallow baby machines. They're still people, but people who have to adjust because they no longer have the freedom that children have. And, rather than portraying the king as a stereotypical antagonist driven by cliché motives of world domination and power, the film could introduce a nuanced perspective. He had a wish, too, which was to make the world a better place. He could be an example of an adult who tries to fulfill their genuine dream but fails because... Again, it's a dream. Wistful and innocent thinking doesn't make the dream less valid. It's a bittersweet reality that while dreams may not materialize in their entirety, the journey toward them holds intrinsic value, encouraging individuals to persist in their pursuit in their dreams, regardless of the final end result. That's how I wish Disney had made their 100th anniversary movie. Something with meaning.

They could have made the movie 100 times better if they had a solid theme like romance or friendship. The original idea of having a star boy, who falls in love with her was a good plot too. But apparently, Disney had decided no more love stories Edit: The name meaning was like a little fun fact for me that's why I shared. It's the same thing as seeing a character of your culture in the mainstream media. There is a big chance they would completely butcher the character with stereotypes and whatnot but before you are disappointed you have the right to feel excited.

    • So you were excited because "oh, an Indian name! Disney chose _my_ people to exploit this time!" ? Just odd in _that_ being the thing that made you excited -- it'd be like me getting excited to hear a Boudica movie is being made (because Éirinn go Brách) only to realize it's more of a fantasy mockery than anything.... _that totally didn't happen and I'm definitely not still salty._ It's a bit ironic... the King who wants to take peoples worry away by making them forget their wishes only to harness it later for his own gain and power is an _astoundingly_ apt analogy for modern Disney. Let you see your wish of an Indian inspired Princess only to dash it away by making her extremely cookie cutter, zero ties to the inspiration, little love and no heart to the tale, all so King Mickey could harness the expectation of your wish to bring "himself" more reach, money, and power. Kind of poetic -- in an E.A. Poe kind of way.
