Imagine meeting someone you disagree with - an athiest, a Christian, a conservative, a liberal - and instead of slinging criticisms, you write down interesting/unknown unknowns that they say to further look into while listening thoughtfully. A bloody rarity in this day and age.

People we are told are irrational, unreasonable, evil, etc., spend their time engaging in attempts to resolve issues through discussion, logic, philosophy, references to scholarship both recent and ancient, and similar, on "new" media. People we are told are good, kind, and honorable spend their time screeching on legacy network television.

It’s not easy and it certainly takes courage, in less than tolerant circles it can even leave you isolated, but it is likely to lead to a greater feeling of honesty, integrity, enrichment and meaning in your life. Feelings of being at peace with yourself. Just my thoughts.

    • @@skepticalthesensible Those are great questions. Most of which I am not able to offer a definitive answer, but I can definitely give a try! Q1: "Why would sin separate you from god?" in Isaiah 59, it discusses this exact point. Roman 2 as well. Both good reading that can help you understand better. But here is my take: sin has a consequence not only to you, but also to those around you. True Christianism is about love and loving is how you show to others that you are a true christian (a reflexion of god from you), by sinning, your reflection is not one that is Godly (as God has no sin) Q2: "how does it (sin) empower demons?" There are different approaches for this answer, here is one: after you sin, you often think about the consequences and often feel bad. That may sometimes create a cycle of bad/destructive behavior, which will often weaken you and makes demon's actions more effectively. Q3: "Do all sins separate you from god equal like murder & stealing a cookies? What level of sin causes what level of separation?" This is a hard one to understand, but some passages from the Bible seem to suggest that both of your examples create the same level of separation. Read James 2:10. The one exception seems to be the sins that lead to death (though my interpretation is that it is speaking of absence of god, that leads to death in the sense of no eternal life). Repenting and fixing the consequences of murder vs the cooking robbery are often what causes one to probably cause a big separation though. Q4: "What are demons ?" entities working on behalf of the enemy. these entities can be manifested in different way, but are often associated with a change in behavior of one individual or in increasing temptation towards sin for all of us. Q5: "If Jesus was without sin why in Bible does devil & demons come to him to battle him the same as sinners?" The enemy and demons are not tempting and attacking as a consequence of sin. Jesus was 100% God and 100% human (I know the math does not add up) and, just like all other humans, he was attacked. The separation of God makes you more likely to succumb to temptations because you need your own strength to do, and sometimes that is not enough. Although Jesus was tempted and attacked, he was able to sustain and be without sin because his human side, was very close to his Godly side. I have a very limited knowledge, but I still felt inclined to answer you. I'd be glad to continue the discussion in this or other forum if you'd like.

    • Honestly, it's not rare. It's rare that you see it on this scale with this many people watching, but in the real world when 2 people are having a good faith conversation, and I CANNOT stress "Good Faith" enough here, it's how things should be. And frankly, how things used to be before everything was all about scoring political points for the onlookers all the time. When you have 2 people who are chiefly interested in communicating effectively with each other, this is what happens.

      @skepticalthesensible@skepticalthesensible Жыл бұрын
    • @@skepticalthesensible I am not religious, but I have some possible answers for you. Obviously as flawed mortal beings we can't assume that we could fully and accurately articulate these answers. Sin separates you from god because it takes you off the path of good, by what amount is often differing depending on the severity, but there are certain sins that everyone can easily point to as evil and people moving away from that and towards what is most commonly referred to as good, is in theory moving towards some higher power, both for yourself and the people around you. This has touched on the empowering demons thing but it will make more sense to address that with the what are demons question. Hopefully the above kind of explains the 2nd/3rd questions. Demons are those things in you that are dark and evil. Some people like to think they don't exist in them, but anyone who's lived long enough will tell you that's naive. Everyone loses control sometimes, everyone looks back on some of their more questionable actions and think "who was that?" or "What was I thinking?" Everyone has the capacity to spiral with their personal demons and experiences with evil that can take them away from what could've been a much better path. So when we say someone is "influenced/possessed by demons" it's usually not indicating invisible creatures, but simplifying the complex influences that drive a person to do evil into one entity. I don't know the Bible well enough to understand the last question fully, but I'm sure it is some metaphor, perhaps Jesus was battling both the sinners, and their inner demons, perhaps the inner demons of all people including in himself. What made people think Jesus was divine in nature was that he never heeded his demons and instead had the ability to fight them, and spent his life trying to teach that ability to others. I don't know what belief you hope to have, but I hope this helps give you an additional lens to look at religion through that may open your mind up to it.

    • @@skepticalthesensible not religious but from my perspective, I've learned that Sin is just temptation. The freedom of choice was given so that you can be tempted, tried, and walk thru the fire or succumb to it. The 7 Sins work thru people, your best friend could be possessed by a sin and they may tempt you to follow them. Jesus was special because no matter what temptations were given, he stayed true to himself. I don't think you should follow anyone else's particular beliefs. You should create your own beliefs and let the experience of life edit and revise your beliefs. Don't let a mortal person or an invisible diety define you. Just a perspective, not advice

The saying of sin separating is from God is a buss statement that was null in void after the death of Jesus who covered all sin for those who believe on him. I appreciate you starting out the conversation by showing genuine interest in allowing Ben to share a bit of what makes Ben himself and sharing commonalities between you both. Great job Russell.

In a survey majority of university professor describe themselve as Democrats. If the right control the majority Trump would have win the election again. Stop with the lies and stop trying to blame everything on the right when it's the Democrats that fail this country under Obama for 8 years of leadership

    • I can't believe Mr. Brand has come from a "Hollywood" entertainer background! Mr. Brand ALONE is restoring my faith (well erasing some my cynicism anyway) of entertainers being just that...Entertainers. Especially today when its been practically mandatory for so many entertainers to hop on what I personally call the "Ivory-Tower-Limousine-Commie- Train", and spout off Marxist/Pinko/hyper-politically correct rhetoric like Jane Fonda in Hanoi on steroids. Despite Mr. Brands casual attire and appearance to the point of almost looking like a used record store punk, he is someone to take seriously as an intellect. I currently take it as a source of pride being one of his subscribers. (And of course, Mr. Shapiro....JESUS! What a "UFC fighter/Navy Seal" of the intellect HE is!)

And then, as he talked to Jordan, he came to the realization "He's a psychologist who wants to heal people." and his demeanor changed completely. The fact he was able to see that when everybody else just wanted to "gotcha" Jordan Peterson really struck me, and I've been interested in him ever since.

But if your heart really wants to know if Jesus is the Son of God, you can ask Him to show you; I asked many years ago and He let me know it's true, so I know He will keep His promise to show you if your sincere.

    • @@durden91tyler Diametrically opposed is a phrase that has been in use since at least the mid-1600s, and is still is common use today. We will examine the meaning of the term diametrically opposed, where it came from and some examples of its use in sentences. The phrase diametrically opposed means to be completely and directly in opposition to something. The reference is to the two opposing points on either end of a diameter line drawn across a circle. The word diametrically is derived from the word diametrical, which is the adjective form of the word diameter. The word diameter is derived from the Greek word diametros, which means measuring across or the diagonal of a circle. Though the word diametrically may be used in reference to the diameter of an object or theoretical figure, it is most often used in the phrase diametrically opposed. The noun form is expressed as in diametrical opposition.
