    • People really misunderstand Conan's guests when he's doing a bit. I'm always surprised by how many people take the behavior so literally, just on the surface level. People that interact with Conan on these remote bits act as they're COACHED to act by producers, and the same is true of celebrity guests. If someone seems awkward or taking things too seriously, they're absolutely SUPPOSED to be doing that. It's one of the oldest comedy techniques of all ... you have the absurd, obnoxious clown, and you have the "straight man" (the straight-laced, all-business person) for the clown to play off of. Humorists have been using this formula for centuries, not just decades. In many of these scenarios, they explicitly NEED someone to be stern-faced to make Conan's actions all the funnier. It's deliberate. He's not meeting up with a bunch of autism-spectrum people that don't understand the humor, I promise ... celebrity or otherwise. If you see someone playing along and laughing, likewise, those reactions were carefully selected for in the editing room. They're condensing hours and hours of footage down to a couple of minutes, the editors control EVERYTHING about the perception of comic timing and perceived reaction. Once in a while, the creative minds working on producing and editing these bits like a potential vibe better than the classic straight-man-with-clown. A good example would be Conan's trip to Cuba, where he tried different types of Rum. They definitely went a different route with the woman giving the tour in that case, but it's not necessarily because "she was better at playing along." It's because it was decided they would portray her laughter, because her personality and looks sold it so well to a potential audience.

It's one thing to understand English as a non-native speaker (it's not an easy language to learn), it's another to do all that AND also be able to navigate the insane humor of Conan. • I come back to Conan without borders clips whenever Kimmels clips on identifying foreigners from Americans (and making fun of their accents/outfits) show up on my feed. Conan never makes fun of other cultures and anyone trying to speak English. Love this man for respecting other cultures and making fun of the situation, not the people or the culture
