I think you have to be on the star for the manta ray which isn't unlocked until he gets the sub star.
Obviously, Mario had to save the princess before the spaghetti finished cooking, so he mastered theoretical physics and parkour.

120 stars in exactly 1:20:00 is so satisfying
Bowser is watching Mario throughout his whole adventure as he collects the 120 stars that had previously been scattered throughout the castle. Bowser is growing more and more concerned for his personal safety when Mario doesn't die. Ever. Bowser is tremendously terrified of Mario when he begins to flip and kick and literally clip through walls because he's moving with such speed and grace. By the third battle with Bowser he just gives up and gives Mario the final Grand Star.
He actually does die. 1:05:18 It's a DSG (death star grab) where Mario dies somehow (in this case the death barrier) and then gets a star before Mario becomes immobile and intangible (in this case by using water's property of always sending you to the surface when you jump in)

It’s even crazier in Plush’s (somewhat) new 1:20.80 TAS where he even beats Koopa the Quick to the mountaintop after getting 99 coins (and uses Instant Release combined with the bob-omb being reactivated at the mountaintop to get a double star spawn. You clearly don't understand how difficult optimal swimming is in sm64. You can lose time and not realise how. It looks simple but any speedrunner you see swimming has probably put in many many hours to get it right.

As Luigi, I have to say that my brother Mario is truly an amazing individual. He is an expert at jumping, fighting and exploring, and I have always looked up to him and admired his abilities. He has a special kind of courage and determination that is truly admirable. I wish I could learn from him and acquire some of his skills, his adventure and skills are truly unmatched. I am always in awe of his bravery and quick thinking when it comes to defeating enemies and overcoming obstacles. If only I could be half as skilled and brave as he is, I would be one happy Luigi.
