  • Old guy here, 30yrs out of DJ world. Long story short, Son saw some videos of me back in the day and wanted to learn. We researched and found Traktor was the best option so we got an S3 for him. He ran off to college so I was with out a tool box. Bought myself a S4 MK3 and I'm back in the game. No interest in anything but my own entertainment. I agree the S4 is under rated and of course I'm still learning. My opinion about the crossfader: It's down to muscle memory. I remember the "glass feel" of the old Rane I used. The S4 has more feedback and I have grown to like it more. I have been able to achieve an accurate chop with the S4. Maybe logging some time breaking down the basics and developing the muscle memory would be helpful. Props for the effort in presenting these videos. I learn from you guys all the time. Thank you.

  • Definitely underrated, absolutely love mine. I still can't believe it's the ONLY spinning platter controller I've seen with a 4 channel standalone mixer! I suppose the target audience really just has no use for an extra deck or more inputs, but I'd find being limited to 2 channels on the rane and pioneer to be a dealbreaker at this point

But lets see what Traktor come up with next super exited to hear they are working on a new controller and an overhauled Traktor.

  • I would highly recommend Joe Eastons S4 MK3 screen mod (available on Patreon). It takes a little setup to get it where you might want it but it completely transforms this unit into what NI should have released or updated to. Customizable colors, pad modes, effects, screen info and much more. It allows you to almost ignore your laptop if needed.

  • I think the reason the s4Mk3 is not talked about is simply because people have moved over to Rekordbox mate. A lot of people thought Traktor was so behind in the world of Dj software. For me me it’s still the best software. That just WORKS.

    • The browsing is not good in Traktor tho. It's far behind virtual dj or rekordbox. As a resident dj the most important part is to play the right song in the right moment. Traktor doesn't have any quickfilter buttons, highlighters or any smart features. It's really annoying.

  • Great video! A lot of people seem to like to hate on Traktor these days. It's still a superb DJ platform. Yes, Native Instruments is very slow with updates and new gear. In my opinion, it's difficult to compete with a big brand and company like Pioneer. Pioneer is great at re-packaging and promoting shiny new hardware without really making that much headway in innovation. I know, stem separation is pretty cool, and flexible beat grids are nice - things that currently lack in Traktor. But, all this technology doesn't make anyone a better DJ. A lot of old skool DJ's could mix before the help of all this latest tech, even back in the days of only mixing on vinyl. It just required more talent and creativity. I think Traktor is still a competitive DJ platform.

I bought the s2 mk2 2nd hand as my first controller over a year ago and this seems like the logical next step, are there any other controllers I should consider as an alternative? • I own a DDJ 1000 srt for about 3 years and have been pretty happy with it. Recently I snapped 2 faders and that lead to a mess of repair fiascos, basically coming down to costing $500 for a new repair. I started looking into possibly upgrading or going with a new controller with motorized jog wheels, and tbh, I hated how the DDJ 1000 is mainly plastic. The Rane 1 really stood out in reviews to me because of the beefy all metal build and motorized platters, but I've been using 4 channels for so long, I didn't want to go down to 2 and so I really started doing some digging. The Traktor s4 kept popping up and after reading and watching many reviews, for the first time in my 5 years of DJing, I bought a non-Pioneer controller. I found a pretty good sale and got the Traktor s4 MK3 for $901 after tax and shipping. It should arrive on Wednesday. I'm a little nervous and a lot excited. I figure at worse, I can return it and just drop the $500 to get my DDJ 1000 repaired but at best, this little beast of a controller blows the "industry standard" and cheaply built Pioneer gear out of the water. Can't wait to find out.

    • @@kevbocat5621 I absolutely LOVE the Traktor s4 mk3. I have my 1000 repaired and collecting dust right now. The Traktor just feels better in almost every aspect. I've been told my sound is better too. That was something I thought may just be my imagination but the Pro 3 software is just pushing out better sound for some reason. There are a couple go to effects i miss from the serato pack. I'm sure those same effects are on the Traktor, there's just SO MANNY EFFECTS to pick from and use and manipulate it's taking me awhile to really sit and work with them all. I broadcast my mix and the Pro 3 software has full broadcasting capabilities built into it which makes it so I don't have to go through BUTT. I couldn't be happier with making the switch.

    • @@jeffreybshuflin6795 Thank you so much for the quick reply. I really appreciate that. For the past two weeks I've been researching different controllers. I bought a Hercules Inpulse 500 about two years ago which I really like and at it's price point, you really get your money's worth. But lately I've wanted to delve into the 4 channel controller market. I've been going back and forth between the S4 Mk3, the DDJ 1000 and the Denon Prime 4. I've never been one to go with "industry standard" stuff. I like to go outside the box so to speak. The S4 really does look like an interesting piece of kit and it also looks like you definitely get the best bang for your buck but a part of me also gets that "too good to be true" feeling as well from it. I want to get something that won't be obsolete in a year or two be it via the hardware or software.

  • The S4 MK3 is a great controller - IF you can live with Traktor. Which I can't because it still lacks adaptive/flexible beatgrids, which I really need. That was the main reason for me to switch from Traktor Scratch Pro 2.x to Serato a bunch of years ago. Unfortunately (but obviously) there's no S4 support in Serato. I have to agree though, Pioneer's "battle style" positoning of the pitch fader on a controller that has no tonearm that could get in the way is a weird choice.

If Pioneer had collaborated with Technics and maybe they had taken the DZ-1200 project together to create an all in One it would have been the best professional product for Dj. I had the DZ 1200s but I used them very little, the CDJ 1000s were another planet even if the Technics were wonderful to admire ...

  • The statement "you dont need large platters" is why no one is mentioning this control. the platters are too small and placed awkwardly, which has been the norm until pioneer almost got it right. Turntable DJs are used to 12" inch vynil. 45" size platters are ok but we rather have at least a 10 inch platter to at least match the 10" serato vynil. The Denon sc3900 was popular because of the 9" platter, the Rane 12 because its fullsize. And those buttons under the jog shouldnt be there. Theres no buttons under the 1200s platters. Pioneer has begun a trend that will soon be the standard.

  • I started off with traktor about 20 years ago and it was my main go to DJ software. Over the last few years the lack of development from NI has left it lagging behind in features and hardware integration. I decided to swap to Rekordbox DJ after getting a DJM S11 about 12 month ago and its been a smooth transition over from traktor. My pals have had the S4 MK1 and MK3 and they are now going over to serato DJ because of the more advanced feature for scratch DJ's. Traktor needs a massive update soon if it is to convince me to go back.

    • Negative. If you're a Scratch DJ, You really DON'T need more tech. That's ridiculous. Native Instruments Hardware STILL has the tightest Integration with it's Software. And it's mappable to just about EVERYTHING on the Market. I use it with my S( with no issues. And I started off with Traktor since it was the Software for Final Scratch.

      @moebetta72@moebetta72 Жыл бұрын
  • Well - Native Instruments are clearly Techno-Machines while Serato has its roots in everything but Techno. I always considered that nonsense but it is true. I am performing on Traktor 4 Decks since about 2010 and I can never imagine doing what I can do in Traktor to be possible in Serato (Of course I got both). I love Seratos touch and sound but NI is Industry standard in Dance Music - period! Then again I do not see any real need for jog and pitch as I am preparing my tracks with cuepoints, grid and loops in advance and NEVER on the fly. Essentially I spend more time on track preparation than with Vinyl (not CD, since I did the same prep with my CD-Decks) those days. And before anyone is going to tell me that that is not real Deejaying... it's not the same thing and shouldn't be compared to good old Vinyl hand pitching. If you disagree, please discuss it with Richie Hawtin or Carl Cox and not with me!

    @Dubmayer@Dubmayer2 жыл бұрын
    • Agree 100%. Been with Native since 2010 as well and have produced pure magic with them. Sound is more "transparent" out of Serato's software. The most transparent sound I've found in Native is to set the EQ Type to Z ISO and the Filter Type to Ladder; and set the Limiter Type to Transparent and the Headroom to None (Internal Mixing Mode). As far as production, it doesn't get any better than Native. It's built for creators and remixers. I mostly work with Techno and I rarely beat match in my mixes or live sets. I also prepare my live sets as well. And I get DJ's hitting me up for ghost-mixing/curating frequently. Deejaying is just like craft brewing. There are hundreds of brew masters that craft their beers in their own way. But nobody drinks the beer due to the process it took the make it. They drink it due to the finished product.

  • Hi, nice video man. I have to say that the s4 is indeed very good, the jogs a little small for me (1200 guy), but the main problem is...traktor :D. Im a traktor fan (i use it at home, every day), but for professional use (Club, bars and other stuff) nobody use traktor anymore (only pure techno, house djs - or rekordbox and/or cdjs ). Allmost everybody else (open format, rap, etc) use serato or rekordbox and i think thats the downside of the controller. Dont get me wrong, i love traktor, the sound and the fx are really great, but if you go to the club, nobody use traktor anymore. Ive encounter this problem many times (they look at me like an old ancient dj -im old but still spinning). Besides i think pioneer stuff are not that good, besides the s9 and s11 (s7 sucks for the price), the other things sucks. Even the cdjs sucks (i know ill get many hate saying that, but its the ulgy truth.). Ive seen a couple of videos with rev 7 problems..that will never happen with N.I. stuff :D Wie meine Deutsche Kollegen sagen, 4 Kanal, gute Verarbeitung, "Build like a Tank". S4 R00LEZ!!! :D :D :D. Another thing, there is a pair of custom 1200 with sp 1015 motor (quartz lock all the way +-10). I ll try to search the video. I know you will be interested :D :D :D

    • @@daflux7 Hallo, ich glaube Sie haben was falsch gelesen :). Ich sage bescheid, daß die Electronic Genre DJs mit Traktor spielen. Open format DJs spielen gerne mit Serato. :D Servus aus Coburg!

  • It seems the mainstream thinks Traktor is 'so 2006' - if the software isn't updated every 6 months its apparently considered 'dead'. I've seen some incredible ignorance about the Pioneers, as though they are the first company to have ever done spinning platters etc. when the idea has been around for a looong time (I know I am preaching to the choir so I'm not gonna list the models - you know them). All I can really say is a fool and his money are soon parted. Enjoy your controller for the next 2-3 years until the new version comes out, and then... buy another one!
