  • "The two seasons I've spent here have given me happiness" She says, in the tone someone trying to say something nice about the lentil casserole she barely managed to choke down. With every previous shot of her looking like it's about to show the suicide prevention hotline's number at the bottom of the screen. And this is the emotional center of the movie, her love for this village and desire to preserve this "happiness." God, what a mess.

    • Contrarians and nostalgia. Some people saw 300 when they were in middle school and thought it was the best movie ever made. When their peers became older and started seeing the gaping faults in every Zach Snyder movie they refused to accept the criticism and dug their heels in deeper and consider every Snyder movie ever a masterpiece because they think it's rebellious and that other people just can't see Snyder's greatness.

      @christianhartman1298@christianhartman129827 күн бұрын
    • @@christianhartman1298 My take was that he got a following during the 00's with movies like 300 and Watchmen, his other movies were hit or miss like Sucker Punch or Immortals. He got the cult status when Justice League was taken over by Joss and it ended up being awful, and Synder got to play up the idea that he was reigned in and the studio interfered with "his vison," basically he got the hindsight bias. I don't think his fans think his recent movies are good, so much that he basically propped himself up as the only director to not get interfered with by studios, and if you don't support him then you somehow get a shittier industry. He totally knows this btw, he recent interviews are him giving this ultimatum to his critics.

  • I don't know the veracity of this, but I did hear it was a movie that Snyder pitched to Disney to take place in the Star Wars universe, but Disney turned him down. If that's true, all the Star Wars elements would be easily explainable.

  • By my rough calculations, 2,000 bushels of wheat can provide sufficient caloric intake (at the recommended levels for the average person today) for 230 people for one year. But there are three huge caveats which will bring that amount way down: A portion of the crop must be kept as seed for the next year, so not all is available to be eaten. That was always a classic question in times of foor shortages, how to balance feeding people now with having enough seed to grow food next year. This is likely a society very dependent on manual labour and will thereby require a greater caloric intake than your average westerner today. Look up the meals that farmers used to eat, they are absurd today. They likely have to trade a portion of their crops for other needed goods they dont product in sufficient amounts.

    • Some points: you forgot about rats, and grainstore fires. Also, speculation. Most famines in medieval times, which appears to be the tech level these people operate at, werent caused by failed crops directly. A small reduction in crop yields would result in merchants buying up the grain and storing it speculating on further price increases. Then, either the rats would eat the stored grain, it would mold, or angry mobs would start a fire resulting in famine. Also, you cant survive just on grain. Potatoes, yes. Grain, no. My estimate is that regardless of the outcome of the war all those people will be dead in less than a year.

    • @@TheSuperappelflap Yeah, spoilage is a thing but that is getting deeper than I wanted to go and going to be highly dependent on storage technology which I can't even speculate. As to needing other foods for nutrients, sure, but that would some combination of things they produce in small amounts for consumption or things obtained by trading their excess crops.
