Inflation is taking money out of the pocketbook of hard-working Americans, which is why many are having to work a part-time job in order to make ends meet.

  • I think the solution is obvious: UBI. Corporations will always price their products in order to sell the most units, which means that they will price to the middle - the same way teachers teach to the middle. This means that for half the people, the world is affordable, and for the other half, it isn't. Unregulated, untethered capitalism is always unfair to half the people.

    • @@AbbyNon one of the causes of high house prices/down payment amounts is the lengthy period of ultra-low interest rates. This made it easier for speculators to buy up more properties and convert them to rentals, and it also led to bidding wars where people would pay over asking to out-bid others doing the same because "the monthly payments are affordable" Now that interest rates had to go up to control inflation, this economic time bomb is ticking much louder.

    • Price is really about cost to the consumer. Most of us can control our fuel costs dramatically by slowing down to nearer to the speed limit, keeping our tires inflated and car in good condition, accelerating a little more gently in the city, coasting up to red lights instead of coming up to them full speed and then hitting the brakes closer to the stopping point. We can plan our trips in loops and incorporate several stops in a loop instead of taking several 2-way trips. Or... and this is a really big one... we can fill more of the seats whenever possible, thus taking a second car off the road for that trip, which helps with traffic and cuts the fuel used in half. If we all lower our fuel use in these easy ways, not only do we directly save $$$, but we also decrease demand, which will lower prices by creating a glut of fuel on the market.

We eat oil in pharmaceuticals. We wear oil in the clothes we have on. Our food is packed in oil. Savas and pastes we use on our skin are made from oil. Cheaper oil means that farmers can grow food and raise livestock at a cheaper rate which is passed in to us. Transportation of those products are going to be cheaper, and passed onto us. Cheaper packages means that end products cost less. Gas and diesel are only part of the refined oil.

    • Actually, I’m a trained chemist with an MBA so I fully understand how many products are made with oil and how many of them, like gasoline and raw PP for car plastics are spot priced. But, if you talk to the average voter, what concerns them is the cost of filling their tank. Considering that at one point when gas was 2/3 what it costs now our annual gasoline bill was 10% of our gross family income, changing the part that we had the power to change had a huge impact on our family bottom line You could campaign by showing people spreadsheets and economic charts but when the people you need to reach think someone can simultaneously be a champion of law and order and Indicted on 88 charges, they’re not going to understand that their new $40,000 car will cost $237 less if oil prices go down by 25%
