Restoring Sega dreamcast controller for my restored Dreamcast - Retro Console Restoration

Restoration of badly a yellowed Sega dreamcast controller and VMU for the extremely yellowed Dreamcast console I restored earlier. Like the console this unit also has only cosmetic defects. There are some glue reside from stickers and the yellowing is pretty bad.
Unlike many other consoles, the Dreamcast plugs memorycards to the controller. They have many other uses also. These same ports can also be used to attach a rumble pack and probably some other accessories as well.
I took the controller and VMU (memory card) apart and there was some dust etc. inside but otherwise it looked fine. However I had an issue of some of the yellowed parts containing metal pieces that would be ruined if I sunk them in hydrogen peroxide. I found that the de-yellowing process also works in only sunlight, but it is painfully slow. In addition I don't have many hours of sun outside in december. So I decided to try my UV-light system only on the parts. Why I didn't put all the parts in. Even though the parts are white the reflect a lot less UV-light than the foil around the box. if these other parts absorb the light the amount of UV-absorbed by the parts with metal pieces per hours decreases and it would take me longer to do this. And even now it took me almost a week.
The parts that could be sunken in hydrogen peroxide were sunken an it took me a day to get rid of the yellowing, which was worst on these parts. Who know how long it would have taken me if I did it without hydrogen peroxide. Before de-yellowing I washed the parts in soapy water and cleaned the glue residues with lighter fluid as many comments have suggested.
All the electronic components were cleaned with isopropyl alcohol. Mine is over 99%. It has almost no waster so it wont corrode the boards. Alcohols are also good at dissolving both water and oil soluble substances. After everything was nice and looking new I let it dry (after washing the h202 off) and put it back together.

    • It didn't flopped, the only reason why it's not as popular as the PS2, GCN or Xbox is because it was discontinued very early into it's lifespan (1999-2001).

Who didn't try to put decorative stickers on their controllers when we were kids? Yellowing cant just be "Yellow on this side and this side perfectly white" Even so, in his ps1 controller episode, the wire that came with the controller was wrapped around the middle part so the middle part didn't get much yellowing. It's a peroxide cream/gel that will stay where you put it, so you could paint it on the plastic parts, keep it off the metal, and still use UV to accelerate whitening. 50V = 25% peroxide; 40V = 20% peroxide; etc.

    @MatroxMillennium@MatroxMillennium4 жыл бұрын
    • The yellowing is caused by exposure to UV light. The fix involves peroxide and either heat (160F or so) or more UV light.

  • For the longest time I thought the yellowing was caused by these devices being in smoking households. Because my friends who lived in smoking households always had their systems yellow like this while mine never did. But then a friend who I know had never had anyone smoke in his house had his SNES yellow, and then I had a cat water fountain yellow (and I've NEVER allowed any smoking in my place). Then I saw the 8-bit guy's video about it, and it turns out it's ACTUALLY caused by UV light, which explains why my stuff never yellowed. I always kept my stuff in a room with heavy curtains so it stayed dark. But my cat water fountain was kept in the living room, and the side that yellowed was on the side that faced the window.

      @kevin3003@kevin30034 жыл бұрын
    • kevin3003 From what I read online, it has nothing to do with bad treatment. “It turns out in most cases it’s caused by bromine, used as flame retardant in the ABS plastic. Over time it forms a stable complex with atmospheric oxygen on the surface of the plastic. Different batches of plastic for the same device can have different bromine levels, hence the yellowing is often uneven across parts of even the same unit. The process is accelerated by UV light or heat - hence even the non-UV-exposed inside of consoles can yellow (or even items in unopened packages).” www.neogaf.com/threads/yellowing-old-consoles-the-solution.899984/
