  • I was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia a few months before HIM was deposed. This was April 8, 1974. Then the terrible DERG took over and two years later my family had to flee my beloved homeland. My familyI moved to Nigeria, Zambia, Germany and finally America. After 37 years in the USA, I moved back to my native land ETHIOPIA and I am so happy I made the full circle. I love America and the people but the government has been usurped by an evil oligarchy that disguises itself as a Democracy. They foment war and carnage all over the world. I never want to live abroad again.

    • And that evil oligarchy at the time was likely already planning the assassination of President Kennedy. I felt sadness when I saw Emperor Salassie and President Kennedy riding in the convertible with the top down knowing what was to come a month later. Sad.

  • His imperial majesty Haile Selasie was a man full of wisdom and vision. He was trying to make sure Ethiopia catches up with modern ideas including science, technology and agriculture. How many African leaders today think like his majesty? ZERO. They are busy thinking about their pockets. I feel sad for my people and the entire continent of Africa.

    • also he speaks of uniting africa which i think is his most important point, since that was never wanted by the west, same reason they killed gadaffi was because he wanted to unite africa and that is too much for america the world power to deal with, another self sufficient country of minorities, c i a racism. and technology and science today is bullshit so africa does not want western science tech or agriculture aka pesticides and gmos. i disagree. africa should do it africa's way.

  • Short in stature, but every inch an emperor! I was a military dependent in Asmara, Eritrea 1962-1966 (Eritrea was still part of Ethiopia) when Haile Selassie I came to visit Kagnew Station. Our high school band played in front of the NCO club for him. One of my teenage highlights as I got to see the emperor in person while playing the baritone horn. Did you know we had American military and families in Ethiopia back then? What a great experience.

Haile Selassie was a great emperor that only crushed those Eritreans which sided with Fascist Italians, even if they were treated less then animals, and had refused to unite with their brothers. After WWII when Ethiopia got back Eritrea, the Muslim descendants of Ottomans and former Askaris started a guerilla resistance against the Christian monarch, but the rebellion had become extensive when DERG came into power because the atrocities it inflected. He never forced Eritreans to speak Amharic but the Ottomans and Italians did force you to speak there tongue. Eritreans had the same rights and opportunities as any other Ethiopian and did advance academically to procure high government positions.
