In the world of football, managerial departures often come with whispers of behind-the-scenes drama. Join us as we delve into the my theory surrounding Jurgen Klopp's abrupt exit from Liverpool FC and the pivotal role played by Michael Edwards, the club's controversial figure in the background.
Known for his polarizing methods in the transfer market, Michael Edwards has been hailed as a genius by some and criticized by others for his hands-on approach, often sidelining the manager's vision in favor of his own strategies. Could Edwards' control over the club's footballing direction have been the catalyst for Klopp's departure?
But the story doesn't end there. Delve deeper, and you'll uncover how this same dynamic may have influenced other key figures' decisions. Take Xabi Alonso, for example, who seemed destined to succeed Klopp at Liverpool. However, his decision to stay at Bayer Leverkusen could be linked to Edwards' management style, signaling a rift in the club's hierarchy.
And let's not forget Ruben Amorim, whose U-turn in negotiations with Liverpool, opting to leverage the West Ham job for a better deal, sheds light on the power play between managers and executives within the footballing world. Ultimately, Edwards appointed Arne Slot, potentially signaling a shift towards a more compliant managerial figure.
Join us as we unravel the complex web of relationships and power dynamics at Liverpool FC, exploring how Michael Edwards' influence may have shaped the club's recent decisions and impacted its future direction. Don't miss out on this intriguing analysis of the unseen forces driving one of football's most storied institutions.

  • What heard was the Bellingham debacle wad the final straw for klopp with FSG. Klopp had met Bellingham and his family, his dad is his manager. So klopp met them on numerous occasions and basically had it that Bellingham would join liverpool last summer. Promises and a handshake etc. That is why it was talked about so much last season. It had basically been agreed behind the scenes. Come last summer , FSG went back on thier Word, saying they did not have the money to buy Bellingham and pay the wage he would command. They said they wouldn't be able to buy anymore players, he would take the whole transfer budget. This was contrary to what they had previously told klopp. That's why we bought other players, such as mac allister and szobozslai and then all of a sudden we had 120 million to buy caicedo. FSG hadn't realised how much they had upset klopp with the Bellingham promise so tried to back pedal in coming up with the money for caicedo. I live in Liverpool and this is what has supposedly been leaked by someone who works in the upper staff of LFC. Whether it's true I don't know but it does make some sense. Last season a lot of football commentators were saying Bellingham to Liverpool was a done deal

    • A month after Bellingham was unveiled at Madrid we started selling our midfielders to Saudi. After that we had 100m to spend. That’s the gap in your story - when we were going for Bellingham we probably didn’t have the money. After we sold a bunch of players we did same way how “all of a sudden” we had money for VVD and Allison after we sold Coutinho.

  • You've got this way too twisted around man. Klopp had his mind made up before the season began. Even if he didnt, he was teetering right on the edge. Edwards wasn't even approached until 2024. The hints of Klopp's burn out have been there ever since Covid, he simply hasn't been the same guy since 2020. Delegating the League Cup to Ljinders should have been the first hint. No other manager or head coach does that. Edwards is an analytical genius and I fully welcome him back. Our recruitment and general function off the field just hasn't been the same without him.

    • I don’t think you are wrong! But we don’t know what’s actually going on behind the scenes! The documentary will for sure tell all. And LFC show us what they want to show us. They do an amazing job of not airing their dirty laundry. I just find it hard to believe that the Edwards appointment was only worked on for a month or so. I 100% believe they had been working on that for a while. And knowing FSG. They were. Just because we found out about it in 2024 means nothing. And I never said Edwards want a Genius. He is VERY good at what he does. And I look forward to see what he pulls off. But I do think that the way he moves doesn’t always please everyone.

    • @@UNCONFORMEDCF that's a fair point about the potential groundwork FSG laid to get Edwards back, but I just think that Klopp's resignation and Edwards' return are more mutually exclusive than some speculate. If Klopp was still hanging around then I don't believe Edward would have come back, because he definitely felt incompatible with Klopp's growing power base. This is probably what prompted Ward to quit so quickly too. But Klopp's resignation has nothing to do with Edwards, he's been more and more mentally checked out every year since Covid. And what most people seem to have forgotten, is that when Klopp was hired way back in 2015, he noted that he didn't see himself staying for longer than 8 or 9 years.

  • Personally I don’t believe that, think Klopp being too loyal to dross like Milner and hendo, being stubborn and not willing to allow more squad turnover and pulling rank. Is the real reason Edwards left. Klopp looks genuinely knackered, he’s taken on too much being essentially the sporting director as well as manager in the last few years. He is burnt out, our energy and tactics reflect that. Tbh, even if Edward’s coming back is the reason Klopp is leaving. A change is needed, even if Klopp was staying we’d need new ideas (new assistant manager for example) as our tactics have been quite shit all season, carried by individuals. Good video tho, appreciate a different take and no club bootlicking!

  • Came here after a shoutout from Dunc on Koptalk. I agree with you, I believe Michael Edwards returning is a factor in Klopp’s decision to leave. Unlike a lot of fans, I’m not overly thrilled with Edwards coming back in this new overreaching role. Obviously we have no idea what is going on behind the scenes, but his return seems disruptive, especially considering how things have gone with the hiring of the next “head coach”. I don’t for a second believe Alonso wasn’t our number one target and maybe this set up with Edwards didn’t sit well with him. Perhaps it was a factor in Amorim demanding such a high wage. I’m just not sure I like it. We have a guy who wants to be LFC manager without actually being the manager. What happens when things go wrong? Will the “head coach” get the boot, or will it fall-back on Edwards? I don’t think things will necessarily be smooth sailing, as we signed some absolutely abysmal players with him leading the scouting and I just feel splitting up the role of manager will just lead to Slot being the fall guy. Will this be successful? Who knows, but it’s evident that it’s off putting for top coaching talent.

    @Synysterjmz@Synysterjmz23 күн бұрын
    • Spot onnnnnnn. Could 100% be why Amorim asked for more “if I’m going to have no control over my squad then I need more compensation” type of thing. The most thing in common with Xabi and him they both play a unique system that need specific players and if they can’t go out and get they players they want and need. It would be hard for their systems to work. We will see if the Edwards method full tilt works!!! I have hope that it will given his track record.

It seems you are right about the conflict that existed between Klopp and Edwards because neither wanted to share recruitment and club building with the other. And remember that LFC tried to woo Edwards back into the fold last year, but he wouldn't bite. Maybe he didn't come back because of Klopp's presence, but after Klopp announced he was leaving, Edwards agreed to come back. In this light, I believe that is the most plausible scenario. Klopp n Edwards weren’t seeing eye to eye on many levels. The owners did not want to lose Edwards outright. So Edwards was on the sidelines doing other stuff when there were other big clubs interested in his services. He knew he will be back to LFC wielding more power than before. For that to happen, Klopp had to leave. FSG, like u mentioned, want to operate in a different way to the traditional Manager in charge of the club. Hopefully it’s a step forward instead of backwards.

  • Great analysis. I think we've got to be prepared for a rough time. Prior to Klopp, we were in the wilderness for many years, tried many different managers and had the whole Gillette and Hicks debacle that nearly ruined the club. I don't think it'll be that bad again but I do feel it's going to be bumpy. I definitely think there is more to Klopp leaving than just being tired. It just didn't make any sense to announce it when he did.

The Bellingham non signing fits perfectly well into your theory as, while young, he was already a high earning, very expensive up coming player and Klopp was well invested into him joining LFC. Excellent work on your part from a US perspective and the future might very well prove you right.

  • This was a good video. The alleged Klopp/Edwards friction is hardly spoken of tho at the time he left, this should have been the clue that all hadn't been well. Mike Gordon then wasnt as influencial so this left Klopp. He's a man of emotion with ego. Not to detract from him, its simply what he is. He's done very well for Liverpool but he's oblivious to his own blind spots (which probably Edwards and Gordon smoothed out).

  • Managers/coaches are traditionally the same person in UK football. On the continent it is far more common. But there have been changes in UK football. Directors of football are the in-between guys,. More often you see managers running the business and commercial side of clubs. Directors of football are in charge of acquisitions to the playing staff and coaching staff The coach just coaches the team. But there are some overlaps. A coach may have a particular player in mind, he will advise the DoF. There will be a list of alternates normally. Likewise the DoF will approach the manager and ask for funds for player. The manager and the DoF will set wage levels. in the old days, when Coach/managers, did this it would often set up fractious relations between players and coach. This would or could lead to poor performances by the team or particular players. Nowadays the coach has to be every players buddy. That is the reason for splitting the responsibilities under different management roles. The people that are hated have to be at arms length from the playing field. Gone are the days of Ferguson's hairdryer, Cloughie's roughshod workingman schtick. They couldn't get away with that in the modern game. Players would rebel and force them out of the club.

    @happilyeggs4627@happilyeggs462724 күн бұрын
    • Sadly yes. And I think ME being appointed “CEO of Football” may be a way LFC is trying to forge a new way forward for the club. Taking a lot of the responsibility off the director of football and then the coach now. It’ll be interesting to see if Arne will conform to this approach for the long term. I feel like any coach would want to have at least some degree of control over their team and the players brought in.

      @UNCONFORMEDCF@UNCONFORMEDCF24 күн бұрын
    • @@UNCONFORMEDCF A good DoF would always consult with the manager about acquisitions. Although I think everyone's hands are tied by the money ball approach. Maybe not tied but guided, more politely, by the money ball approach. If your front three, including Salah, have an average rating of 8.9 (on my imaginary scale because I don't know what ratings they use), and you sell Salah who's rating is 9.4, the other two players with ratings 8.6 and 8.7, (avg 8.9). Then you replace Salah with another 9.4 or improve with a minimum 9.4. Or you replace Salah plus one or both the others and recruit players who will maintain, or increase the 8.9 avg. That's my view of the money ball system. But you have to do it within budget.

      @happilyeggs4627@happilyeggs462724 күн бұрын
    • @@happilyeggs4627 in a way thats how it works. If I'm not mistaken they do have an internal grading system they use based of specific stats and if the signing checks off those boxes and isn't above the designated price range then they are clear to move for them. the key si finding a player that does that and isnt over 60 million lol

      @UNCONFORMEDCF@UNCONFORMEDCF24 күн бұрын
  • Amazing video and good analysis .....This move is associated with its risks but i think Edwards is known for getting deals through with less risk. Missing Klopp is going to be big but i think "The Monster of Merseyside " is going to the right direction. My personal view is that unlike the previous appointment of Brenden Rogers that was a nightmare just to recollect now.....this move with Slot is risky but as a fan i know theres a big safety net with Edwards and the bunch who will correct things sooner rather than later within the season and get us more aligned and focused on winning. Its quite simple ...if FSG want to make more money , they need to do two things , become Arsen Wengers Arsenal and make money by selling players and reaching every top competition without winning much or be like Real Madrid and keep buying top players from across the world to win all top competitions can become a massive marketing money making machine ..... it would be good to see what FSG and Edwards have in mind for LFC

  • There were noises recently that FSG were not happy that they were spending £110m on a player they could have bought for £5m a few years before and possibly they were also not happy that they were spending £60m in one lump sum for Szobozslai when he could have been bought before for a much lower fee. I think at that point FSG may have decided to bring Edwards back and have him takeover from Gordon it is on record was looking to finish. I dont buy that FSG suddenly decided to buy a football club to get Edwards to come back 2-3 weeks after he knocked back his old job. Look at the available evidence. Marques finished his role in January to "pursue an international opportunity". We arent paying compensation for Hughes because he handed his notice in in November. So we either got really lucky in getting those 2 in or they knew something was happening months ago. I am not saying that any of this drove Jurgen to leave, it could also be the case that he was tired and didnt fancy the new direction, but I find it difficult to believe that the club didnt decide on this plan months before it came out in public .

  • I don't think Edwards is the reason for Alonso or Amorim backing out. Klopp did have some issue with him at certain stage though. That said, I doubt his return is what explains Klopps departure. It's simply the lack of backing he received since 2018. That was the last year, FSG really went out and splurged...that too only after Coutinho was sold and the obscene sum we got for him helped finance the deals that pretty much created the backbone of the success that followed. Following the league win in 2020, LFC could've attracted the best and brightest in football seeing how the title was won in such spectacular fashion and that Kopps stock as a maanger was at an all time high. Any player would've played for him. However, FSG chose austerities in light of Covid and continued to keep a tight purse till 2023 when it became obvious that their tight fisted policy with regards to transfers backfired as the club didn't qualify for the UCL.

    • Alonso backed out cos it was better for him to get the Real Madrid job first. Getting sacked from Real Madrid wouldn't rule him out of the Liverpool job. Or the Bayern job. Real Madrid sack every manager, eventually. Getting sacked from Liverpool would have ruled him out of the Madrid job... That's how I see him working it.

  • Good video man. My 2 cents here. Rogers almost win the tittle with the squad Edwards was responsible, that season he did not complain. After Suarez sell and all the new signings came to Liverpool and the transition time came, Rogers start pointing on Transfer committee as a reason for poor results. Obv some transfers was bad, Klopp prove that after selling almost all of this players later on. When changing some much stuff at once it always a big % chance of trouble (look at Chelsea), even if the young players coming are good with great potential. I like the idea of decentralize power, no all of the power to coach, or the director. There is too much work to for one man only. I love Klopp and all we had with him, but as all great stories there is always a end. 10 yrs is a long time, the game is not like use to be, pressure is much more, we had the maximum we can ask from Klopp, I believe he is out of energy and this is clear on his face. He also need fresh start in his live. Legend forever and GL to Slot and Edwards on spoting on the best talents out there for us.

I also look at it as Klopp is tired has been at the club for 9 years, sick of VAR and refereeing in the Prem, sick of big clubs like City etc with endless money pits buying and breaking rules. I think FSG have seen Klopp wanting to leave and go into retirement for a while and thinking they need someone they trust to steer Liverpool on post Klopp. And Edwards is that guy they trust.

    @ML-rs9kd@ML-rs9kd23 күн бұрын
    • Indeed. I trust Edwards to make the right choices. He is essentially the main man now that klopp is going.

  • Now I know I ain't crazy. Kopp and Edwards had it over keeping Hendo, Milli, Fab and Thiago, so Edwards left. When Edwards was approached in 2023, it was reported that he was not interested in the job, he had is business to focus on. Was it not announced that he is taking the job after klopp said he was leaving or after he took the job klopp decided to leave ? Either way, it's one in the same.

  • As a manager I'll be responsible for the coaching of the squad and be involved in the recruitment of players. As a manager, I can't take responsibility for any player that I did not get involved in his recruitment. And it's now coming to light, the reason why Amorim was not appointed. It will not end well with Arne slot accepting to be sidelined in the recruitment of players

  • I have the very same feeling but when I said it in a chat I am part of everybody's head fell off they didn't like what I said i was out of order and wrong I still believe Edwards left because he felt Klopp was getting to much power and I believe FSG want that power back and are using Edwards who is loved by the fans as the tool to get it back off Klopp and let him walk away from the club

  • 100% Agree with the Merseyside Monster video. My thoughts entirely. The truth is coming out in the wash. I have no time at all for Edwards and his ilk. I feel uneasy about the future. I am sure that American chap is correct. He knows about US style sports management. I wish FSG would sell to some rich Arabs. I am sure Klopp was pushed out. Get lost FSG. It is not about money. It is about the spirit and soul of Liverpool football club.

  • Following Edward's departure, the signings we've made haven't been particularly impressive. While they were decent, I don't consider Nunez & Gakpo to be on par with Michel Edward's signings. Since his departure, the quality of players brought in hasn't been as high. I admire Klopp and his team, but we need to have faith in Edwards, and any new manager should also trust him.
