How to Paint a Portrait in Gouache | Step by Step! Tutorial
Thank you everyone for all of the lovely comments, it really does mean the world to me! I will try to respond to them all when I get a spare moment . Just know that I've seen them and that I am so appreciative 💛 I am working on my next video currently, which is a little more relaxed than this one. Subscribe and turn notifications on if you don't want to miss it! 😊 - Emily

Hello, Id like to ask, what sketch pencil did you use? It seems to be red/brown in color
Honestly, I've been in art school for years and I've learned more in this video than at school. I definitely appreciate the work you put into this video. Thank you.
This comment alone made all the effort worth it 💛 Thank you for watching!
Wow you’re getting ripped off at that school
@@Eizengoldt haha you're not wrong.
Which artist or an influencer had the most effective teaching on ur art journey?😁
@@Nushka22great question!
“Throughout the entire portrait painting process you are making choices. Some are going to be good choices and some are going to be bad choices. That’s just the way painting is. We are ultimately aiming to have more good choices than the bad and that can only really come from practice.” I needed to hear this. Your video and teaching are excellent. I learned more in this video than I have in many I’ve paid for. Thank you and good luck on your painting journey!
I like that you kept the mixing palette so we could see how you mix the paint, it makes a lote easier to learn and capture how the paints react and interact with each other. Love your work, thanks for the video💕
I'm so glad you liked seeing the palette, I wasn't sure if it would be helpful or not! 😄 Thanks for watching!! 💗
You're very kind for making a video this detailed. I sometimes like the sketch too much I'm afraid to ruin it with paint but this has inspired me to actually sit and practice gouache portraits... Also I'm usually lazy because pencil sketches are way faster than setting up all the painting supplies and I'm very impatient 😅
I like to take pictures of the sketch just in case the painting doesn't work out 😅
I am the same with not wanting to set up the paints sometimes 😆 Thanks so much for watching! I hope you get the chance to get those gouache paints out and have some fun! 💛
Yes thank u for keeping your pilot in frame!!!
You can really see years of experience being applied here. Love it!
Thank you so much, that means a lot! 😊
I don't think I have ever learnt so much from a single KZhead video so thanks so much!!
Ah this was such a nice comment to read!! Thanks so much for watching!
This is exactly what I wanted, i have gouache paints and I have been dreading to pain some nice human heads and today I got the tutorial from my favourite artist ❤ thank you sooo much it means a LOOOOOTTTTT TO ME
Aw I am SO glad!! Comments like this make my day ❤️ Happy painting! 😄
LOL! I love the way you worded this! "Some nice human heads"
@@amypanddirtytoo1926 hehe words like these ce Outta me due to excitement 😖🤭❤️
Yeeeesss
I appreciate you having the palette included in the frame.
I always have a hard time wrapping my head around cool and warm colors (especially with blues!). Thank you for talking about this a little more in depth, I think that solved some issues for me ♥🙏🏻
I am so glad you found this helpful! Thank you so much for the lovely comment ❤️
I've been learning and practicing painting with gouache for maybe a year now, by myself, just like I did with pencil portraits, and when I see someone more skilled than me doing the things I learned on my own, it really makes me proud, like "oh my god, I do it the right way." When you picked up that lilac gouache, my eyes widened with recognition! An incredible video!!
I just wanted to tell you how excellent this video was. It was so detailed and helpful. Aside from that, it was inspiring also. Making something that was so hard for me feel attainable made me pull out my paints that I’d shoved away for a while. I’m genuinely grateful, thank you.
Thank you for leaving such a kind comment. I am so happy that you found this video helpful and that it inspired you to pull out your paints! 💛
Thank you! This is the first video Ive come across that explains the colours for portraits in such detail! So helpful!
I’m scared when mixing a color, that i dont have enough of the color and i wont be able to mix the same color again. I got worried when u mixed such a tiny amount for the skin🫣
I love that you were so detailed with your process. It really helps to see the process and try it out yourself.
Awesome video and well detailed! I also fell in love at the first sign omg
This was so thorough but easy to digest. Awesome instruction!
Emily this is a Masterclass. Thanks so much.
Thank you so much for watching!
So pretty!!
Just did my first portrait in gouache, and this helped me so much! Super fun, I’m going to have to paint more portraits. Thank you for making such an in depth video, I think a lot of your tips can apply to other mediums too, and I learned a lot for mixing skin tones 💖🥳
wow I just learned so much. wrote two full pages with all your notes, tips, and techniques. many many thanks and I can't wait to apply that gained knowledge!
Haha my painting professor would throw a fit if he saw your pallet. Honestly that is how my process goes too, my pallet tends to evolve like yours, not super organized (I tried to make sure the prof never saw it haha). I really appreciate watching your process. I took an oil painting class so I know a lot in theory about painting and color mixing, but I honestly didn't practice a whole lot during the class. I don't have a pallet for my gouache paints so I was really frustrated with the mixing part. I'm gonna try to make more portraits over winter break this year, and get a new pallet! I'll be thinking about your video. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much for sharing this. Ive painted in gouache for years but definitely learned a few new things I’m excited to try. 😊
Thanks so much! You’re a great artist and great teacher 😊 really inspired me to try gouache 😃
You are tremendously talented. Thanks for sharing this.
I love getting to see you mixing on the palette, I feel like that is such a crucial element that often gets left out. It's part of the process. In art school I often wanted to make pieces from the chaotic palette leftovers more than showing the actual painting I was working on. Your work is gorgeous.
This was so so useful Emily! I SO appreciate how you walked us through everything with so much detail. I think I've said this to you before but the looseness yet precision of your portrait brushstrokes is so captivating to me 😍
Love the mixing palette in the shot while you paint.
What a great video. Been painting for awhile and learned some new stuff. I’m gonna try working with lilac.
Beautiful work.thankyou so much
I'm so glad you made this process video with such well thought-out explanations for each step. Probably one of the best I've seen. Thank you so much. I definitely subscribed midway through the video.
Out of all the art tutorial I have seen yours is the most helpful.
EXCELLENT video! That painting is amazing. The shapes are so captivating and really pleasing to look at. I hope to learn someday! ❤
Fantastic explanations and tutorial 👌
your tips have truly helped me! Thank you!
I'm so glad! Thanks for watching!
Perhaps the best portrait tutorial I’ve ever seen. Your understanding of color, and more importantly your ability to articulate what you’re SEEING, is brilliant. Great work and thanks for sharing !
The painting turned out so amazing Em! I'm super comfortable with drawing but frightened by colors. You've inspired me to keep trying and get more practice with painting
Beautiful portrait!
WOW! Awesome video - she knows what she's doing:) Never tried gouache, as I'm scared about it drying so fast. Thank you and glad to see you're responsive to your viewers.
I am so glad you enjoyed! Gouache can be intimidating, but it has so much potential 😊 Using a slow drying medium helps with the drying time 💛
thank you so much! this video is really helpful. i learned a lot with every little explanation you shared (like the red areas of light around shadows, or the tip about constantly rotating the brush to avoid repetitive shapes). this little bits of information are the most helpful. thanks again!!!!
Thank u i really needed this 🥹💘
I enjoy this video pretty much, thank you 💖
Wow! What a brilliant tutorial! Must try this very soon! Thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge in such a beautifully constructed video. I’m so inspired to get busy after watching this ,you are a natural teacher as well as talented artist ! Loved this so much! !!!!
this girl has one of the kindest souls in the world, this video is so detailed, her voice is so soothing and she basically replied to all comments thank you for this it helped a lot🫶
I loved this video! Your style + explanation are so easy to digest! Thank you can’t wait to see more
Thank you! I'm so glad you liked it 💛 I'm hoping to do more videos like this in the future! 😊
This was unbelievable
I absolutely adore this. You gave us real time mixing. From all the videos that I've seen learning to paint with gauche is that its best to learn how to mix well and see what colour combination gives the best result so that you don't just collect tubes
Fantastic wonderful TRULY appreciated video!!!! So helpful, informative, concise, … just, all the things. Thank you so so so so much!!! ❤❤❤❤
Just loved this. So well presented, found it… and you… informative and fascinating. Amazing to see the transformation from what, to me was confusing, to a really coherent image. Thanks and well done.

Yes this style is what I’ve been aiming for with portraits! I also use primarily flat/blocky brushes. Love this!
Ooh that's amazing! I think for me, the direction of brushstrokes is the most important thing to consider when trying to achieve this style 💛 I'm so glad you enjoyed Christine!
