M32 gearbox oil change easy DIY transmission
There are a couple of things that you can do to improve the lifespan of your M32 gearbox transmission. The key thing is replacing the transmission oil regularly. No service interval is specified for the M32. However, I believe that it is essential if you want the M32 and its bearings to last.
You should pick a good synthetic oil and replace it every 30,000 miles.
Make sure the M32 gearbox is filled to a correct level (slightly overfilled is fine too). Underfilling the M32 gearbox is a recipe for bearing failure.
Another thing that you could do to prolong the life expectancy of the M32 gearbox bearings is to adjust your driving habits to avoid heavy acceleration in 6th and 5th gear to reduce the load on the 6th gear bearing. This is particularly important in diesel cars, which have a lot of torque.
If you’ve already browsed through internet forums in search of information about the M32 gearbox, you might have heard that overfilling the transmission makes it last longer because of improved lubrication of the 6th gear bearing.
The oil capacity of the M32 gearbox is 2.4 litres. Filling it up to 2.8 litres is okay and may actually help. However, before you do anything, please double check what the correct oil quantity in your car should be.

Thankyou very much for this Sir. This is VERY helpful and well filmed just like many other of your videos.
I have this transmission in my 2014 Chevy Cruze. I learned very early on of the importance of having both the right type of oil and the right amount. I use amzoil synchromesh and put in 2.4 quarts.
Jesus Christ that music that blasted in after your intro just deafened me!!!!
Thank you for making this video. I changed my oil today on an opel corsa d m20 gearbox following your instructions.
Good job 👍
Came on this site after finding bad oil leak from gear box on my meriva b, where the f is top up plug, came on this site and you found it for me thank you very much. From frustrated gear oil top up plug seeker:)
Thank you lol moreland.
Great video, thanks for posting, thanks from ireland👍👍👍👍
This was very helpful, thanks!
Done that last night. Straightforward thanks to your video . Surprised that I only drained 1.3 litres of old oil 😬 and it has been changed 4 yrs ago by the previous owner.
Good job👍 , also in my car there was only 1.7 litres of oil. At least now it's good 😀
This is because he didn't lift more the front of the car... And maybe because there some small lost of oil inside
kzhead.infoDK4UKYif_2s From my gearbox after 174 thousand km I drained about 1.6 liters of oil, and flooded 2.7 liters of vavoline 75w80 😊
I had the same with my astra vxr. I put 2.9l of fuchs sinto fluid 75 80 in 3 years ago and its been silky smooth untill the last few weeks it doesn't go into 2nd that easy when the outside temp is below 0. Gonna do another change next month so will be interesting to see how much oil drains out this time
I changed the transmission oil on an Astra H (2007) with the M32 after around 110,000 km. Open the inlet screw (10 mm hexagon socket, new screw with magnet, old one without), level the car and then open the drain screw on the driver's side (12 mm hexagon socket) and let everything drain for a longer time. For new oil I used the Castrol GL4 TRANSMAX Manual Multivehicle 75W-90 oil (use GL4 only!). 2.4 liters come in, up to the control screw it would be 2.2 L, but don't open it! Or if you really want to open it, put the 2.2 liters in until it drips out, screw it shut and put another 200 ml in. Never had any problems!
That's the difficult way !!! Just pump it out through the breather hole, empty, refill done. No faffing about, quick, clean, easy !
Hi, yes, that's easy if you have a pump to pump in and out the oil.
Exactly what I needed on my Astra 2.2 Direct, as it's got 150,000km on the clock, and I don't think the gear oil has ever been changed. I've only owned it for 2 years, and it's been great, but I noticed a whirring noise in 6th gear, and it was getting difficult to shift smoothly. I've overfilled it with 75w-90 GL5 and it seems happy now. Thanks for such a great video.
Did you fill to over flowing? Any issues?
@@missionfitnessarmyfit1466 Not to overflowing. Drained as much as possible (tilted the car to the left, to get every possible drop out), then put in somewhere between 3.2 and 3.5 litres. Can't remember the exact amount.
Ignore my last comment. Just checked my records. A little over 3 litres.
Thank you for the video!! Very detailed and clear information 👏
Thank you Sorin
I sent for 2.9 liters of Fuchs titan sintofluid 75w80 in my Alfa Romeo MiTo 1.6Jtdm that comes with this gearbox mounted.
I run moly-slip G in my box it looks after the bearing a bit longer also racing oil, it can stand the heat better, it's a bit more expensive but worth it.
👍
👏👏👏👏
Could you let me know, why you used exackly this oil?
Great video! What is the point of the 'level' hole? Would you fill until the oil exits this hole? Or is it easier to just drain and add 2.7L as you have shown. And is it necessary to jack up both front wheels?
First drive the car for 20 minutes then jack both sides up and drain the oil, add 2.7 litres of new oil, then drive the car and at the end you can remove the level plug and some oil should come out from the hole. But in this gearbox is better to have more oil than less oil. (I didn't record it but I jacked up the other side and lowered this side just to be sure to drain all the oil).
Perfect👍😎
Thank you 👍
HI, I know that we have to overfill the gearbox slightly and that the oil level plug remains untouched we should use around 2,9 ltr but if I want to top up without removing the oil level plug how do I know how much oil to fill?
Hi, if you just want to top up without removing the level plug then you cannot know the quantity inside, the best thing is to drain the oil and then refill it.
0.2L remains in the gearbox after draining, if the car is level. Then add 2.6L of oil through the top plug. No need to touch the level plug.
Is Mobil FE 75w80 good too?
Hi good video, I've just done my M32 box but only 2 litres drained out, should I just put in 2 litres of new oil or add a bit more thank you.
Hi, if it's the 1st generation of the m32 gearbox then you should add half a litre extra, if it's the 2nd then you can put only 2 litres but it's better to have about 2.2 litres.
@@WhatTube Hello, how do I know if the m32 gearbox is 1st generation or 2nd generation?
@@parasutokulmudurlugu4781 2nd gen has added oil galleries to help the oil to flow to the top bearings. Look at the casing and you can tell
Hello just I bay the vauxall combo 2007 when the car is cold make the gerbox strong and noisy when u try to change the gears , after 10 min u can drive fine , can same bady tell me need to change the gerbox oil ?? Thank u
If it's only when it's cold then the oil change could be helpful.
And lubricate the gearbox linkage as well (I have a different video).
Hello my friend. I have this gearbox to my opel insignia grand sport 1.5. It makes a noise at neutral that it stops when i press the clutch. What do you think about that? Thank you
Hi, it sounds like a bad flywheel to me.
Thank you for your answer. I forgot to mention the most important thing. The noise began after they replace the clutch pump because of fluid leak.
Hass anyone noticed any significant improvements doing this?
What size is the transmission fluid filler plug? Mines is stuck, any tips or idea how to get it out please?
I think it was 10mm allen key and it's an M18x1.5
The only way is with sum strength using a bar attached to wrench or solid long 10mm allen key, hold it in place and pull with all your energy. It will break loose but always realese the fill plug before draining the old oil just incase it don't come loose and your left with a empty box
Strange you say? When draining the gearbox your car needs to be leveled!!! it is clear that your car is leaning towards right.
Hi, I lift the right side and lowered the left but even then this was the maximum I was able to drain it.
It's a tutorial video and you should unscrew the oil level bolt Nevertheless you are ok and i leave a like
Thank you
oil level plug is redundant and not used actually, in the revised endcases they dont even have one. measure your oil into the filler,
@@Firestorm-graphics you mean that the manufacturer of m32 has in wrong place the oil level bolt?
Many M32 gearbox specialists recommend overfilling slightly to preserve the bearings, and anecdotally they have success in avoiding gearbox failure
Hello and thank you for this video. What are your thoughts about this Fuchs Sintofluid oil? Have you felt any change since the oil change?
Hi, It's a good oil for this gearbox. I replaced almost a year ago and the difference was that the gear shift was more fluid.
@@WhatTube thank you very much for your quick answer!
@@musmuk5350 its a gl5 oil, dont use it, use gl4 ... people are just stupid LOL
@@johnnyhun1 You're right, but on their site it says it's for gearboxes. What do you think about Mobil FE 75w80?
@@Wisuy "for gearboxes" dude, seriously? A tractor or semi-truck also have gearbox but its way different than a smart car gearbox :D And by the way, my Opel astra J requires 70w gearbox oil which is really hard to find so I put in 75w instead (its thinner than 75w80 so more close to 70w)
Can you do this without using silicon sealing compound for the plugs? Or is it ok without using compound on them
Hi, you don't need to use any kind of silicone for the plug on these boxes.
@@WhatTube will I need any sort of radio code again to get the radio working after putting the battery back in the car? Will I lose access to anything? I have an astra GTC J. Thanks for the reply
No you don't need a code, you just need to set the basic things like the clock, favourite radio station or the windows memory.
@@WhatTube windows memory?
@@CLIFTYPOPS yes, you need to hold the switch for 3 seconds when the windows are fully up then lower the windows and hold it again. You may have to repeat more times.
Thanks a lot!
You're welcome 👍
on the Ravenol oil guide page it is said that the filling capacity is 2.2 liters empty and 2.0 liters service . 2.7 liters would be 2.9! so almost an extra liter?
Hi, yes that's true, you need to put extra oil because of the bad design of this gearbox.
I have 2014 new (stage2) gearbox, from 2012 it new gearbox echipement with berings more hi diameter
asapgearboxparts.co.uk/products/m32-m20-gearbox-uprated-late-back-end-case-2011-onwards-62mm-top-bearings with lubrication channels and larger diameter bearings
later boxes are just as unreliable as gm used cheaper brand of bearings, pinion bearings are the fault on these, where as earlier modals it was the endcase bearings
Why do you point out 2 drain plug which 1 do I remove thank
Hi, there's just one draining bolt, you can see it at 6:54
9:31 please don't show bad habits of removing bolts with a torque wrench. That's a terrible use of a wrong tool for that job. Good video apart from that.
I use that wrench only for removing the bolts as a breaker bar, and use the other one as a torque wrench.
You add 70w80?
Hello, how do I know if the m32 gearbox is 1st generation or 2nd generation?
The 1st gen is up to 2013 and the 2nd gen starts from 2012.
The second improved end case has oil galleries added to help the bearings get oil circulated better. You can see the galleries from looking at the casing. Have a look at a revised m32 end case upgrade and you will see the difference
My gearbox is a m32 in a grande punto , i notice that when put the 2nd gear more directly it grinds some times not always and if i shift slower apears to be good , any tips?
I have the exact same issue please let me know if you find out why this is happening
@@alangordon7660 mine i think is the clutch swich that is toasted and is not working , i will change it and will let you know ;)

might of only had 1.7 as you had car jacked up on one corner only not both sides but doesn't matter because you now have nice full gearbox of oil so very nice for bearings. LIKED
Thanks, I jacked up the other side as well with the plug removed then lowered this side but just 1.7 litres came out.
@@WhatTube that's strange, great video very simple to follow no excessive chat about anything I really liked it. not usual I press the like button.
Thank you very much. 👍
@@WhatTube yes very clearly explained
They changed the oil level in the m20 m32 gearbox due to it not been the right amount. The 5 or 6th gear depends on model was missing or didn't factor in an proper oil fed to that bearing and they wore out. You can get a gearbox upgrade that recorrects this problem and believe the gearbox hold 2.5 to 3litre of gearbox oil. All these gearbox fail because of this problem.
What about the astra j 1.7 ecoflex is it the same as this
Yes, but there's an internally upgraded gearbox from 2012 onwards.
Слил 1,7 литра залил 2,7 это как?и в эту коробку надо лить 75w 85 а не 75 w80
Can this oil change eliminates whining noise problem? I have noice problem in 3rd and 4th gear. It's like an 'airplane cabin" sound
Hi, you can try to change the oil but I think the gearbox is damaged inside.
Does this transmission have a filter?
Hi, No, this transmission doesn't have a filter.
So its basically people that boot the shit out of these things, particularly in 5th and 6th that cause the bearings to fail?.
Yes the 5th and 6th are very prone to fail because the box have a bad design.
Wakanda forewer
No need to go through the trouble of removing the battery. The oil can be pumped in in a reverse order to draining. Like it is done with 722.9 transmission oil change.
If you've got the equipment to pump oil, I'd imagine most people at home doing this don't🤷🏻♂️
@@jamesdarlington Got there before me. This is more aimed at the DIY mechanic 🤣
How many liters of oil does m32 need?
Because not the all oil comes out during draining, you should add between 2.4 and 2.6L
Gyárilag 2.2 kell bele ! De nyugottan lehet 3 liter bele rakni . Igy meg lesz előzve a csapágy kopás
Opel zafira b 1.9 cdti 8v 2l?
2.5l?
lose the techno music!!!
I will, thank you.
Is this Meriva ?
This was a Zafira but some Meriva do come with this gearbox as well.
I done this on a Zafira B 1.9 120hp 2010, and got the same 1.7L coming out. Tried lower the drain side of the car but no more oil came out...
So I unscrew the level check bolt and added 1.7L oil, plug my finger in the level check hole, no oil. I fill it up with another 0.5L, now the oil started to drain at the level check hole. So I put back the level check bolt and added another 0.4L oil. Now it shoul be 2.8-2,9L oil inside. It came from the factory with only 1.9L. oil!!!! (I read that 0.2L oil will left inside when draining)
Good job In this gearbox it is better to put extra oil in it.
The manual of my 159 states it holds 2L of oil. Most gearbox experts say pour in 2.5L to prolong the life of the bearings on the secondary output shaft.
75w80??
Yes
A total Goid of a gearbox, the factory fill oil's shite TBH
