  • I'd just like to also thank you for the time you would have put into this footage mate... Big task, Big thank you.. I was suprised to see how much forward motion was lost on that climb test as the overdrive ratio got bigger.. certainly wasn't the "grab and pull up" effect we are all led to believe, it was almost like a power bleed to front axle through traction loss. No doubt it increased turning radius though. I know what choice I'm making.. Cheers mate👍

    • @zilla-green yeah mate, stock trans but using a Power HD tr4 servo with a fixed servo horn so dig works a bit better, pulls it in and out reasonably confidently. Cheers mate 👍

  • I was completely on the fence about putting overdrive in my Capra and I think I'm just going to focus on making my dig 100% functional instead of messing with overdrive. I don't really have any issues with steering other than wanting an occasional tighter turn, which dig will offer. The decreased battery life, increased stress and wear on tires and other driveline components don't seem worth the minimal advantages with this rig. REALLY appreciate the time and effort you put into making this video--keep em coming!

  • After your recommending I install a front overdrive now that I disabled the DIG in my RTR Capra I felt it only right to revisit this video. Learning that an overdrive WILL shorten my battery's run time I have decided that it is NOT a modification I will make to my Capra.

  • I had the tgh od gears but had issues getting "bound up" when trying to reverse up very steep inclines. It drove forward fine... Some real smart person told me to take em out and try it and sure enough the fronts were pushing the rears into the climb before they had a chance to spin. And a few other people in the capra page on fb had the same issue. Thanks again!

    • Yeah man. After I finished that video I remembered that but was out of daylight to go back out there and try it. I was at a comp today and one guy said it did it to his and another said it was fine. I guess it’s a toss up. I have them in Optimus 3 so when I get to drive that I’ll make sure to get whatever happens on video.

    • @@ExocagedRC maybe it has to do with motor torque. I put the 11t pinion and put 1.9s instead of the 14t and 2.2s and it still does it but it makes it further.

  • something i learned a little while ago, you can buy under drive ring and pinion to put in the rear to achieve front overdrive since the capra is geared so tall. idk if theres underdrive portal gears you can put in the rear but that would be nice also.

  • Thanks for all the work and showing us this. As someone else and you said, the whole overdrive for climbing we were told, seems to be a bit if a myth. Which after watching this makes sense. Sure the front is spinning faster and pulling, but now it's trying to "drag" itself up hill. Be like putting the dig system in full lock and then climbing. Not quite, but that should paint a nice picture. Lol.

  • resurrecting an old video but damn this is good! I have the 4ws Capra and have about 12%od in it right now and fell that I lost performance so I ordered some 25% and haven't even received them yet when I seen this video. • Thanks for doing the tests. I know it takes quite a bit of time and effort to show this info. What I'd really like to see is a climb that the Capra cannot make in stock form but can make with overdrive. Otherwise, I think I will stick to my view that overdrive is not really a benefit with this particular truck.

  • Never got why people like to overdrive personally. Granted I'm more into trail running than competition but the only benefit I see is a slightly better turning circle. Other than that you're literally giving up traction everywhere as the gearing has no choice but to force one end to slip. You could see it best on the side hill, With the overdrive the front end was losing traction trying to drag the rear along and started walking down the hill. Could also see it a bit in the steep rocky climb, Stock gears walked straight up while the more overdriven ones scratched around for traction as they were trying to climb at different speeds. Better to have all 4 wheels turning at the same speed and let them work together rather than fighting each other. That's just my opinion though. Would be interesting to see a comparison of overdriven vs stock on something like the kicker ramp you used on some of your tire tests, Would be a good way to see how much traction is given up from the forced tire slip where little differences in line etc. won't play into it.

    • I’ve done OD comparison videos before. In competition turning and maneuverability is everything. Like you said in turns it helps and that’s the benefit. I’ve never really seen the OD help on a climb, now the dig absolutely can work to get the front to pull down and then drive out. When I do trails I take the OD out, it’s inefficient and makes things hot due to the constant bind. So comps yes, trail no on OD for me

      @ExocagedRC@ExocagedRC3 жыл бұрын
  • Nice breakdown! Bit random, but do you know of any OD/UD gears for the portals on the Gen8s? I have the 20% Treal OD ring and pinion up front, but that really only equates to about 10% at the wheels - after the reduction in the portals. I'd like to get more OD up front by regearing the portals, if possible.

    @PaulRawlins2@PaulRawlins24 жыл бұрын
    • I don’t think there are any portal options for it. 10% is good for trail work. I’m not sure if anyone is making lower gears you put in the back or not.

    • @@ExocagedRC Hmm... I've got around 20% up front on my SCX10 II trail rig - just makes me jealous when I drive my Gen8s. LOL Redcat does sell a "UD" gear... but it's really an OD gear. Think they're still figuring things out. ;)
