Here's the long delayed sequel to my clay cracking experiment video and some of these turned out much better than I expected! As a spoiler alert, none of the topcoats I tried in the first video were that effective, however the ones here were very different. Applying the topcoat was the first challenge as most of these required mixing, melting and pouring. I don't normally works with things like sugar and wax so there was quite a learning curve involved. I did mention in the video that 2-part resin is fairly expensive but that's because I usually get those small bottles for making jewellery and charms. If you buy epoxy resin in bulk then it's probably the same or even cheaper than nail polish.

  • A sugar coat is definitely not recommended. Hardened sugar is almost like glass. Sugar artists even use it to make little windows for projects. Lmfao

  • PLEASE DO NOT HEAT WAX (BEESWAX ESPECIALLY) IN THE MICROWAVE! There is a really good article by Beekeeper Tips explaining why but I’ll quote a few sections: “Something like gasoline burns at a lower temperature - beeswax burns 30-40% hotter than gasoline. Beeswax, in addition to being very flammable, is very complex in its flow characteristics - it sticks to things. This means that if it does catch alight and explode, it coats whatever it hits in a very hot, angry, flammable sticky mixture.” “Beeswax melts slowly in a microwave, and when it does, it heats unevenly. This means that you can have patches of wax that are sitting at extremely high temperatures. Flammable liquids have a temperature called a flashpoint - this is the point at which something will catch alight without you having to use a flame.” “The big problem with a microwave is that it can heat water to the point of being superheated. What this means is that you can heat water above its boiling point. At this point, any small disturbance - a bump, a phone ringing, etc, will cause the water to turn from gas to liquid - instantly. […] Often when we process beeswax, water can become trapped in the wax. A small drop of water will explode if it is at the base of the melted wax.” Basically, when you heat beeswax in a microwave, you are making something that will be unpredictable, sticky, and prone to exploding and covering your skin. No ASMR is worth that, use other methods to coat the clay or heat it safely in a double boiler.

    • Thank you for the clarification! I realised very quickly that wax doesn't melt properly in the microwave and it wasn't behaving like any other material I've melted before. So I did it very slowly and it ended up taking almost 30mins for each tiny batch of wax. I have seen various KZhead DIYs in the past where wax was melted in the microwave so I knew it was possible but I definitely don't recommend it

I will learn to use melt over water method - or just use plaster - if I can find the right darn measurements for asmr but I can’t find proper method … but thank you so much for very important info I was just melting wax for wax /slime creations but I believe I was using parafin ? 💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐3-6-24

  • The MOMENT you mentioned sugar I knew exactly which one was going to hurt you. Sugar can be super dangerous, due to its sharpness as well as difficulty to use. The amount of times I (as a hobbist candy maker) have sliced myself on hard crack stage sugar is insane. Honestly the fact you didnt burn yourself dipping the clay is lowkey impressive.

  • When working with resin make sure to have proper safety equipment like gloves, respirator mask and also make sure to work in a well-ventilated area. When mixing together resin and the hardener you create a chemical reaction and because of the chemical reaction a harmful gas is released.

  • If you do try the resin version, I recommend being careful because resin can also be quite sharp, especially the harder it cures. (I actually thought that would be the one that cut her until I saw she was also going to try the sugar coat) I've cut myself on resin many times, and if I accidentally get broken resin on the floor and miss a small piece while cleaning up, it can feel like a small sliver of glass going into your foot.. yes that's happened to me a couple times 😅

    @craftydemon529@craftydemon5299 ай бұрын
    • Before starting the video I was also most wary of resin! I thought it might be sharp when broken but it turned out fine (although it wasn't as thick). The sugar one caught be by surprise as people eat candied fruits all the time and you don't think that's dangerous 🤪

  • If you ever do the sugar coating for any future projects. Try using a deeper bowel of water and quickly drizzling/ dropping the sugar in to test it. Your first attempt was what is called "soft ball" stage that is desired for some candy recipes. the latter was "hard ball" stage and if you throw the ball with force into a metal sink it should shatter. It's a quick way to know if your sugar is ready without a thermometer but requires being quick.
