This song offers an interesting contrast of languages - the sacred language of the church, Latin, and the sensual French. This song is not only about de Sade, but about love and sex, the soul and the flesh. It offers a view into the period of time De Sade lived in, when sexuality was considered an affront to God, since the Church believed it denied the soul.
De Sade took that stance to the extreme, denying anything higher than sexual pleasure as false. So basically this song contrasts the strict, spiritual world of the Church and the debauched, amoral world of de Sade.

  • Mom played this over and over when I was 9 years old. It was the most beautiful sound I’d ever heard and I would ask her to play it again every time we were on the road. She passed away last year while I was living in Thailand and when I came back to pack her things and have her car detailed, this randomly came on through her CD player while I was in reminiscence of her. She was such a beautiful woman. Rest In Peace momma. Will see you again one day...

  • We grew up very poor but honest and when this song came out we we're suddenly rich cos our entire family dreamt of a place somewhere quiet,peaceful and convenient for us. We imagined us feeding animals,roll down grassy little hills and swim in clear mountain pools while shouting our names and laughing when it echoes.   • I was 45 when this fist came out. Loved it from the first time I heard it. The Gregorian Chant has always been very mystical and haunting. The sound of them singing in church echoing everywhere is totally captivating to me. Maybe it's my Italian, Catholic background, I don't know. Bringing it into a new Era at the time was quite daring. It still works today. I'll be 78 in April and I still love to hear this. 🙏💙

  • I dedicate this song to all the people in the USA. When I was a child, me and my parents emigrated to this country. We walked and rode buses from El Salvador to this country, after crossing the border, we hopped a taxi and the cab driver was playing this song and it stuck to my head all this years. Long story short, I am now a Doctor with two offices doing very well, we also travel the country offering medical help to people that dont have the means to pay for care. So thank you America for taking us and make a better life for my family. God Bless America!

  • Enigma reminds me of my early 20s when I was nursing in Leeds at the Clarendon Wing. Thirty years on I am a single mother of 2 wonderful teens and coping with looming Empty Nest Syndrome :( I have suffered from depression and now have severe OCD which I battle with daily. Listening to wonderful Enigma again is making me reminisce and I had forgotten just how incredibly powerful it is!!!!

  • The first time I heard this song was in 1992 when I was 16 years old. I was at a stereo shop with some friends and the owner put this on in one of the cars he was doing an install on. The bass was incredible. It shook the walls and windows. To his day when I hear any enigma song I’m taken back to that time and many others in my life.
