During the late fifties, my family would regularly visit with my grandparents on Sunday afternoons. They lived in an old house on a big lot with lots of trees. There was an old tree out back that had a softball size hole in the truck, up about 12 feet. While the old folks sat on the big porch out front, talking about the "good old days", us kids would entertain ourselves "shooting baskets" by tossing the ample supply of rocks into that gaping hole. We did this well into the 60's. Many times I would be alone. The adults never saw us do it. It was fun hearing the rock as it tumbled down the long hollow trunk of the tree. Never thought anything about it until the Saturday my grandfather paid a man to cut down the old tree. This was a very big tree. The man made his initial cut to remove a large wedge. He got partway in, and his saw stopped. He had a heck of a time getting that tree down. It was filled solid with rock, clear down to the ground. Grandfather was swearing. The tree guy was swearing. My face was red as a beet. I confessed to my grandmother what we had done. She laughed and said, " Let's just keep it our little secret." She never told him. When they finally got the tree felled, it was unbelievable the amount of rocks that were in it. I can still hear gramps saying, "Who the hell would do such a thing?"
Great story! I can imagine the confusion on Gramps face!
That was certainly a gorgeous piece of timber, it would be perfect for furniture or anywhere slabs are required. Maybe vanity units also.
No problem to identify the exakt year, when the metal was penetrating the tree. If you know the year the tree was felled, count back the annual rings from bark to the metal object.
Merci
HOW MANY BEAUTIFUL AND GOOD GUITARS FROM THIS TREE... (obviously, 😀🥰 🎸🎸🎸 after 5-6 years of natural "seasoning".
I think this was an old horseshoe, re-forged to two pointed ends, to be used as a bracket/clamp. I have found several of such things in beams of my more than 100 year old farm house in France. At that time, people re-used everything - they couldn't just go to the hardware store and buy everything new...
.
Absolutely fantastic axe chopping technique!!!
You guys should make a book on these pieces and do the story of how you came across them!!..my father made me love wood and it’s incredible beauty!! Thank you for your gift…..and stories!! Once a wood worker……………..always it will mean so much………thank you!💋💋❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Wow, that is pretty wood!
Amazing what you can find buried in tree wood. I have ruined my Stihl chain saw blades more then once on "virgin" trees. I trashed a brand new table saw blade, first cut on the saw as well as the blade ripping a fresh 2x4 from the lumber yard. Beautiful piece of wood though
In oak trees on the cambridge commons in Massachusetts you can still see bullet holes from musket fire dating to the revolutionary war.
We found alloy fragments in a 300 years old and 30 m high oaktree in our wildlife nationalpark in central germany a few years ago. This parts got clear identifeyed as wingparts from a P - 47 ,, Thunderbold" US Fighterairplane , crashed into the woods 20 km southwest from Hannover in the last days of April 1945 . This parts can bee seen at the wildlife nationalparks enterance center building.
Wow!😮👍
That's pretty wild.
@@bensnide5846 Yes , and there was found much more metall parts in most every big trees . Our County was wellknown as big woodindustrial area. Every singel small town once had its own wood factory & sawmill .... and most of them was fitted with X-Ray because the woods in 30 Km distance around Hannover was littered with airplane fragments , .30 & .50 Cal . Bullets and german anti airkraft & US & GB grenade fragments. Our Smalltown is still wellknown for its former shoolfurniture factory CASALA .

That’s amazing!
A volunteer eucalyptus completely ate my schwinn stingray after we put it behind our shed, just half of the rear wheel and hub was sticking out, we found it when it blew over in a storm. Always wondered where my bike went.🤣 A friend of mine bought a property that was a car junkyard, they cleared it to plant walnut trees except the old oak with a tractor grown through it. It's really cool and about three feet in diameter with an old tractor stuck in it.
I suspect there is a lot of junk in trees, im at the other of the process, was planing some white oak for a built in and saw this shiny spot after it ran through. A lead bullet. Just left it there ,customer thought it was kinda cool. Thanks for the video
I've come across many lead bullets milling up trees. Not as hard on the equipment as steel.
A spike someone had driven into the tree maybe 50+ years ago and then bent over, hence the large flat first piece, the bent over part, perpendicular to the straight pointed spike piece in the chunk they cut apart. Apparently one of many, it was a convenient tree for hanging things on or tying things too. I'd like to have a table made out of one of the slabs.
Maybe somebody built a tree stand for deer hunting or whatever, and this is for the steps? How did their chainsaw survive cutting thru metal like that?
Yes, it would make a beautiful slab table or bench.
Quite easy to sharpen the chain. Won’t do any harm to the saw.
I remember the "save the trees" people would drive spikes into the trees thinking it would damage saws.
Wow - what kind of chain can go through metal like that and just need a little filing to bring it back? I’ve wrecked a few chains and even a bar on trees full of metal. No doubt they are special trees. Beautiful slabs!
Old iron/steel is softer than modern steel, that is the one saving grace of junk like this!
In New Zealand (Invercargill, Queens Park) some old pines were being felled, and in one of the stumps I investigated (on a whim) I found still buried in the freshly cut surface a huge pebble (size of my clenched hand) that the chainsaw blade had very very lightly just skimmed (operator probably wouldn't even have noticed, ear muffs and safety goggles etc). Took me a while (!) to dig it out with my swiss-army knife. Made me ponder, but no point in keeping it ... I'll have look later and see if I kept any photos.
As for the artefact in the stump here, it looks like a purpose-made bolt?
@@johnhough4445 Maybe a spike for holding something to the tree, then got bent over apparently.
Beware of old trees growing along fence lines and around old farm buildings. Many a saw has been ruined.
When I was a boy -- a long time ago -- I found several .32 caliber pistol bullets in a block of pine while splitting firewood at the family ranch in Montana.
I have seen a lot of glass electric insulators and the side pins they were mounted on grown inside of trees.
I’m impressed that the chain made it through that metal.
We ourselves are in shock, and this despite the fact that the chain is Chinese🤔
Interesting thanks guys. Oh yeah and thanks for not using words such as "extreme" and "dangerous" in your video description.

Well if that ash tree is ~100 years old (1923-2023), then sometime in its early years of 20-30 years old (1940s-1950s) drove those spikes into the tree.

Time to sharpen the chain or put on the spare after that Nail cut. You guys need a Splitting Mall not a Hand Axe to split wood, good luck.
amazing works
I had a tree once that had been used forr target practice , or some one faced a firing squad😮
Hello Belko guys! Always love when we get another video from you! 😁 That was a big piece of metal in that tree! Yikes! 😬 You need to use your metal detector on these and save some time sharpening your chains. God bless and much love from Mississippi, USA 🙏💜😊
A metal detector won't help much. If metal shows, then you will have to cut a piece of wood, and in the end there will be nothing to saw😅😅😅😅 Greetings from Belarus

I initially thought it was a bullet. In any case, an unexpected surprise!
Did you say, "Thank You" to the nice person who left the artifact?
Very perfect 🔥

Do you use 1,6mm 0.404 chain for sawing those slabs or something else ?
Yes, exactly like this
It's alien technology. Don't throw away that tree!!!
My grandfather ran a sawmill and would never accept a tree that had grown near someone's house, too many nails, spikes, etc. Can you imagine the damage to the equipment, must be valuable wood.....
Shrapnel from war-time elements being shot off??…..leave some pieces in their places!!……sell it with a story about the wood! So exciting!! Fabulous!!…what does it smell like after you cut it??……great!!……please make a photo book!!💖💖
I was a hardwood lumber inspector for 33 years. I have seen some pretty weird things that grew in to a tree. I guess the weirdest thing I ever saw was a #11 Victor steel trap grew in a log. Entire trap chain and all.

Perhaps it was impaled long before, and as the tree grew, it enclosed it within itself. It is a forged nail.

Maybe this tree stood near a battle field of WW2. Then this are maybe shrapnels or something similar. I heard of cork oaks that damage veneer cutting blades in southern France.
We never cut heavy trees in smal parts without pre X - Ray or metal detectors .

cut down the length without thinking and wasted lot of wood
Think so too, to hell with ruining the length to take out something that gave it even more character. Not in the business, so I don't know for sure.
Wow you guys are hard headed!! If I found just 1 piece of metal even half the size of what y’all cut through the first time that whole log would have been in the firewood pile… how do you justify destroying all of your chain for half a dozen slabs?
A chain may be around $100, the slabs of wood would be worth many times that!!
