Today is the one year anniversary of Hurricane Ian. In this video, I show you videos of what I experienced as Hurricane Ian hit my home in Cape Coral, FL. I then travel down the streets of Cape Coral including the Yacht Club, Cape Harbor, and Tarpon Point Marina areas to show you the damage and destruction left in the wake of Hurricane Ian. My heart goes out to those affected by Hurricane Idalia.
I hope residents in know what to expect and prepare for hurricanes.

We all know this was terribly traumatic for you, but thank you so much for sharing this journey with us. I am grateful you are safe, and that your home did not receive any more damage than it did. May God bless and comfort you and your community as you rebuild your lives. Continued prayers for you all.

The feeling of "knowing" it's headed straight for you is completely consuming, my heart goes out to you! All of the county is a flood zone, so we are thankful our property is still here but hurt for you all. We evacuated to Orlandoand, heard later, it was headed for us! Roofs were torn off, electric was out all night and part of the morning, restaurants were underwater and all those beautiful palm trees on the interstate were sheared off. New construction homes were leveled. I 4 was under water so we had to wait a day to go home. The amount of damage is more than I can put in to words. I am so thankful you are ok and I pray for all of you.

  • Your video was incredible. I live in Sarasota and my husband and I evacuated our mobile home and stayed at a hotel near SRQ airport. We had everything we needed to ride out the storm. I slept like a baby through the storm. I was so exhausted from prepping for over a week as soon as we checked into our room on Wednesday morning I notified our family members we were safe and I went right to sleep. We were safe and blessed that there was no damage to our home or cars. Only a few plants fell over. There was significant damage in our mobile home community. We don't mess around when it comes to hurricanes. We evacuate. It usually takes me a week leading up to the storm to secure our home and move some of our belonging into our storage for safety. Praying for all those who lost loved ones and were devastated from the destruction hurricane Ian left behind. I had 1 tomato on my tomato plant when we left. When I came home the tomato was still on the plant. I ate it the next day...🙂

  • I've been through several hurricanes in South Florida since 2004, I remember hurricane Frances in 04 was a cat 3 storm and it seemed it would go on forever our house had aluminum shutters so we could not see out at all but every time a wind gust went through the small space of the window and the shutter covering it it sounded like a freight train hours and hours of that. • Thank you for videotaping this. I live in Canada and have never seen a tropical storm although I have seen the after-effects of them on TV News. You did a great job of moving around the house, videotaping from all angles, starting from before the storm started. I couldn't believe watching people's roofs blow right off the houses! And the way the canal so quickly went over its banks - it's no wonder that tsunamis from the ocean are as huge as they are. It must be an insurance nightmare where you are - everyone waiting for tradespeople to repair roofs, homes, garages, electric teams to get all the posts and lines back up and running. If what the scientists say is true - that climate change is going to make these storms even bigger and more deadly, it's going to be really tragic in the future. I hope your damages weren't too extensive and I hope nobody was hurt.

  • Thank you for posting this. I grew up in Temple Terrace but my Dad owned land down on the Cape (by the Country Club) and my Uncle lived down off of El Dorado (Skylark Court) back in the '70s and '80s so I recognized the drive toward the Yacht Club (used to ride my bike to go swimming at the beach or Yacht Club pool) off of Lucerne and Coronado. I also recognized where Christ Lutheran used to be off of Del Prado and Cornwallis. Everyone always talked about the possibility of such a storm hitting the suncoast but never thought that it would be so devastating. I am glad to see that y'all are making progress. I understand the surge flooded many of the businesses off of Cape Coral pkwy by the Old Publix now a Winn Dixie. Such a wonderful place, I have fond memories of it back when anything north of the churches on Del Prado was the boondocks and Tarpon Point was still the Rose Gardens. Prayers to all down there. So they moved last month and the area that they live in now got hit by Ian but….they never got flooded, and never lost power and there was no damage to the house….just small debris from the trees on the ground.

By the grace of God and wonderful plans put into action by my Army-retired husband, our house survived. When we learned it was going to be a Cat 4, we bailed with our 5th wheel in tow to MS. I'm devastated by the number of ppl who decided to stay for Ian. Truly heartbreaking, as I knew there would be many lives lost. We can replace material things, but human lives are far more important. • I remember when hurricane parties were popular, when we first moved to Southwest Louisiana. When hurricane Camille hit the Gulf of Mexico, some people decided to stay and have a hurricane party, right on the beach in an elevated beach house. Unfortunately, Camille cleaned their clocks by killing everyone in that beach house except for a 12-year-old boy who I think survived by clinging up into a palm tree. That hurt my heart. Where we live, that day, it was sunny and clear of any clouds. I had prepared for a storm should it come here, but nothing happened. I still can't get over that. Same type of thing happened with hurricane Katrina. My husband, a pilot who flew choppers for a tad over 48 years, was off with the large helicopter, which had evacuated to Florida, so he was safe, though he was on his 7-day work hitch. The SUV which had been paid off about six months before, got drowned in the flooding, in Boothville. It was my husband's vehicle and was parked in the lot at the base where he flew out of. We took a hit, but it was just a vehicle and others lost everything they had and others, their very lives, so that put things into perspective for us. With Katrina, I was able to see the clouds from the storm, which were moving in a circular path, in the distance. A few weeks later, hurricane Rita hit us here, but the city where we live did all right. The storms seem very much stronger, hitting harder inland these days, though.

    • Hello Roger, thank you so much for your concern. We are all ok and have only minimal damage to our home compared to many others that have flooded and were completely destroyed. Thanks for watching.

  • Wow. I lived in Cape Coral for 20yrs, left in 2013. This storm was Charley's ghost, coming back to NOT jog north by 15 miles. Smh, the absolute worst is the aftermath...as you can see, it is truly devastating. Thank you for sharing this! I was with you all in spirit, as my daughter (who moved to Miami) and I were texting as we tracked and watched it all happen. 💜💪💜
